I have my Google Drive mapped to a local drive. However, now that photos are in Google Photo only, I'd like to map a drive to Google Photos so that I can access my photos in Windows Explorer. How do I get a drive mapped for Google Photos?

Answer:

As I know it right now. They completely took away local access. PLEASE GO MAKE A STINK ABOUT THIS! When they disconnected Google photos from Google drive, they didn't come up with a solution. THE ONLY WAY TO MAKE THEM BRING IT BACK IS TO SPEAK UP!

Answer:

Hello Jennifer, the photos you have currently mapped from Drive to your local drive are not going anywhere so there is no need to make any mass changes. Going forward you have to consider what to do about new photos and this will depend on their source, which is?  It would also help if you could share why you want the photos mapped, Peter

Answer:

Many of the photos that I take with my mobile device I use to attach, insert or use with other programs or websites such as Word, Publisher, Email, Ancestry etc from my desktop... It is extremely time consuming to have to download each picture that I want to use with another program.

Answer:

Hi Jennifer,

For new photos taken on mobile I have the OneDrive app installed with settings to upload new photos to the OneDrive cloud where they go into the camera roll. I have the camera roll synced to my HD where I manually move them to add to my photo archive, or if you have enough capacity you can leave them there.

Deleting from the desktop does not delete from the mobile device.
Deleting from the mobile device does not delete from the desktop

The mobile photos are backed up to Google Photos as normal, so they are now available online for sharing at HQ and on my computer at original size,

Peter

Answer:

1. I already pay Google for additional storage and don't want to pay yet another company (Microsoft at that) to store the same photos
2. I don't want to have to manually move photos
3. I want my photos sync'd regardless of where I access them from
4. I want to be able to drag/drop into other folders on my Google drive in a single window

Answer:

1. I already pay Google for additional storage and don't want to pay yet another company (Microsoft at that) to store the same photos - You don't have to, you can use the free 5GB allocation on OneDrive as a transit path from mobile to your PC and move them to your Google Drive sync
2. I don't want to have to manually move photos - This is no longer a choice with Google Photos
3. I want my photos sync'd regardless of where I access them from - This is no longer a choice with Google Photos
4. I want to be able to drag/drop into other folders on my Google drive in a single window - Not sure what you mean by this one, perhaps tis possibility is influenced by the answers above.

For the avoidance of doubt, we do not have any influence on how Google develop their product, we simply try to advise based on what we know can be achieved.

Answer:

So basically I'm screwed because I use more than 5 g just with my geneology research and will now have to do multiple steps when it used to be easy.

I am already near my max on OneDrive so "free" is not feasible. I use Onedrive for a completely different reason.

Answer:

As someone who is also in need of direct access to my files, I would like this feature back. "Being safe" is not an issue nor an answer. It's being able to control and have direct access to my photos. I use workflows that have direct access for my use. This is a major blow to lots of people. PLEASE GIVE US BACK DIRECT ACCESS TO OUR PHOTO/VIDEO FILES!!

Unfortunately Google do not monitor these questions.

The best way to let Google know your thoughts is to provide feedback, see:-

In summary, to send feedback to the Google Photos team
  1. Go to photos.google.com or open the Google Photos app .
  2. At the top left, open the Menu Menu, then select Help & feedback and/or Send feedback
  3. You can tell them things like:
  • What you like or dislike about the app
  • Things that are confusing or don't work
  • Things that would help you use Google Photos better

Question: Phone stolen and i want to retreive my pictures from andriod phone

Hi Michelle,

If you were using Backup and Sync, then your photos will be stored on the cloud at photos.google.com. The exception being that any photos you had taken since your last backup may not be on there.
You will need to ensure you are logged in using the Google account that you used on that phone.

I would also suggest that you
  1. Check the devices logged into your account and remove any device from your account that isn't yours (or remove the one you no longer have access to)
  2. I would recommend you change your password as soon as possible.
That will prevent anyone who has your phone gaining access to any of your accounts.

Question: Can you sync from google photos to a pc that has google drive on it to have an offline set of photos

Sync my google photos to a pc to give offline photos appears to of been working till July 2019

Hello Dave,

As you have discovered, the Sync to Drive was deprecated in 2019 and there is no substitute method of sync available.

The best option is to use Google Takeout by selecting the year albums as per below.

Go to Google Dashboard and expand the Photos tab then left click on the 3 dots and select Download data. If you wait a minute until 'All photos albums included' pops up then click on it and deselect all.
See screenshots online.
Then scroll down and select all the year albums Photos from 2020 etc, or any Albums you have created

You will now get a single copy of each photo, one json file per photo, and one filename-edited.jpg for each edited photo.

Unfortunately there is no easy way to use the json files without specialist software so they can be safely deleted.

Regards,

Peter

Question: Why do my videos that have been sent to me have no sound

Trying to get sound on videos sent to me

Hello Sheila,

Thanks for posting on the Google Photos Help Community.

To assist you better, could you please let me know if the issue appears only with the shared videos or with all the videos on your Google Photos?

Meanwhile, as you're unable to hear the audio of the videos shared to you on your device, I'd suggest you try some of these basic troubleshooting steps on your device:

1. Sign out from your Google account and sign in back.
2. Uninstall and reinstall the Google Photos updates. (Go to Settings > Apps or Application Manager > Google Photos app > Uninstall Updates > OK). As long as you have a strong Internet connection (Wi-Fi or mobile data), your Play Store app will update to the latest version within a few minutes.
3. Try clearing your app data which is the same as uninstalling and reinstalling the app. After you clear your data, sign in and turn "back up & sync" on again.Open your device's Settings app (not the Google Settings app).
a. Tap Apps.
b. Select Photos in the list.
c. Tap Clear data.
4. Restart your device.

Also, could you please try and checking the videos on web version of Google Photos and on any another device by logging into the very same Google Account and let me know if you see the same issue?

Keep me posted.

Best,
Sonya

Recently, Google made the decision to remove the option to have Google Photos automatically added to your google drive. I require that this functionality be restored. Without going into detail that could get me in trouble - My work requires that I be able to take a photo on my phone and have it show up on my computer on file stream. Now, if Google would add the functionality to automatically show your google photos as a folder in file stream, or return the OPTION of directly syncing the two, or of automatically downloading your photos from google photos via Backup & Sync, that would be fine. However, they decided to remove a CORE functionality of Drive and Photos that is causing me and others in my organization SIGNIFICANT issues. I expect and require an immediate fix. Please have a customer service representative contact me directly.

Answer:

There is no customer service - Google Photos is for non-commercial applications.
The Google Photos app on your phone automatically add into a stream called library - so I don't understand why you need to show anything on Google Drive.

Hi Naresh,

Once you delete photos from Google Photos, they're moved to Trash for the next 60 days. If you deleted them by mistake you can always restore them from the Trash folder within those 60 days. Here's the link explaining how to recover them from Trash.

If you accessed the Trash and manually sent the photos for permanent deletion, or if the 60 days expired, there is no way to recover them from Google Photos but you may wish to review the following options:
  • have you made any backups of the photos on your phone, camera, computer, or elsewhere?
  • there is a small chance that you can recover the photos using a recover deleted photos app.
  • you can contact the Google Drive support team to see if any deleted files may be recovered. Use the Google Drive contact form, click Missing or deleted files, select a contact option, and be sure to tell them you permanently deleted files in Google Drive.

Sandie

Answer:

I'm sorry, the only options are the steps outlined in my original post. Have you tried contacting the Google Drive team, or using a recover deleted photos app?

Sandie

Answer:

Hello Naresh and Sandie,

Welcome to the Google Photos Help Community.

@Sandie: I really appreciate you sharing your valuable inputs.

@Naresh: I completely understand how important those photos to you. However, as you've deleted the photos/videos permanently from the trash, unfortunately, there isn't any way to recover them. If not, you can always recover photos/videos from the Google Photos app trash.

If you have back up & sync on, photos and videos you delete will stay in your trash for 60 days. You can recover deleted items by following the below steps:
  1. Open the Google Photos app .
  2. At the top left, tap Menu , then Trash .
  3. Touch and hold the photo or video you want to recover.
  4. At the top right, tap Restore . That photo or video will be restored to your Google Photos library and added back into any albums it was in.
If you're unable to restore from the Google Photos, the following things could be the reasons:
  1. Photos and Videos moved to trash more than 60 days ago.
  2. Photos and Videos moved to trash, then emptied your trash.
  3. Photos and Videos moved to trash permanently deleted from your trash.
If you don't find the photos/videos, I'd recommend you look for your photos/videos here, signing in with all your Google accounts if you have more than one:
I'd also recommend you contact the Google Drive support team as they can restore photos up to 21 days after deletion if the photos/videos are available in the Google Drive. You can click the "Missing or deleted files" entry of the contact form and request a phone call or any other option that works for you.

Check out these handy Help Center articles for more information on how to "See if you can restore deleted photos& videos" and "Find missing photos & videos".

    Keep me posted.

    Best,
    Sonya
