Is it possible to auto sync camera media files to google drive? I'm not interested in Google Photos. This feature is available for all Google Drive competitors (OneDrive, Amazon Drive, pCloud, Dropbox and probably many more). Do we need to switch to other app to get this done?

The Google Photos app only can sync to the Google Photos cloud, not to Google Drive (never could). 
But the OneDrive-app or Dropbox-app can sync to their own cloud - don't know about Amazon or others.

Well, I disagree. In the past we had easy and working solution to backup all photos from android device to google drive via google photos sync.But strangely Google decided to abandon this feature and push their users to use other cloud providers :(

Of course I know that, but you said that you were not interested in Google Photos and that "backup" only could live when all your files were stored on Google Photos and not on Drive at all. 
These files just were links taking no storage - only when downloaded to computer, you got the real files there again. 
Besides it was a very incomplete sync because edits and descriptions made on Google Photos were not visible on Drive. So it was a bad method and very problematic for many. 

I am not aware of any phone app that can sync your photos to Drive immediately. 
Sorry - no Google here to blame.

I use Google Photos without any connection to my Google account because I prefer the folder view and don't need the backup function as I have backed up all my pictures on my computer.

I had some issues with timestamps being wrong because I am moving my pictures back and forth quite a lot, so I wrote a little python script that automatically resets the timestamps using os.utime() and the win32_setctime module.

Now I found out that if I rotated any of those pictures with Microsoft Photos (so they are displayed upright) the date of the picture according to Google Photos is the exact time I saved the picture with Microsoft Photos, no matter how and how often I try to reset the timestamps afterwards.

The time is displayed correctly and yields the desired order when sorting after modification date both in Windows File Explorer and when I try to access my pictures from an app different than Google Photos, such as WhatsApp.

Does anyone know enough about Google Photos and about the metadata of a .jpg-file so they can explain me how to undo this?

From previous observations, Google Photos uses the IFD0 ModifyDate in the Android environment with Backup & sync disabled.
 
I do not have experience with the utilities you are using, but would be happy to try and confirm which Exif tag dominates under the conditions you are using.
 
If you could share an example of good and bad by uploading a sample to Drive and share the link.

The screenshot <visible online> explains what is happening, but I'm not sure how you can fix things without using a different utility to rotate the images. Basically IFD0 ModifyDate trumps any file dates in the Google Photos app

I can do it with FastStone Image Viewer by removing all Exif then rotating again and it should behave the same as example 2 & 4

Hi, It depends on the reason given, if it says they already exist the you have possibly enabled the Google Photos folder in My-Drive and removing this folder will solve the problem. This is what happened: I opened the Google Photos app and clicked on the little, colorful round letter of my initial on the top-right of the screen that opens up some options. The app recommended that I make use of the 'Free up space' option to save me about 66GB on my device storage, by deleting the photos & videos that are already 'safely backed up in your chosen quality'. I have done this once before, roughly a year or so ago, and knew that my 'Back up & sync' option was enabled and all of my gallery folders were selected, since I check this somewhat regularly because I'm afraid of losing the stuff on my phones storage on accident. I also changed the upload quality not too long ago,  because i wanted to make sure that my things were backed up in high quality. 

So I went ahead and agreed to the 'Free up space' option. It let me know that it could take a little while, since it was quite a large amount of data (about 66GB), but it assured me that it would notify me once it was done freeing up the space. I watched it for the first few minutes, and it took a while to move from 0-5%, but once I saw movement, i stopped paying attention. 
Some time later it let me know that it finished, so I checked my devices storage, and saw that I now had 58.1GB free storage space, compared to the ~5GB I had before. So, I went ahead and opened up the Google Photos app to double check that all of my things are there, and lo-and-behold, I see a bunch of Photos & Videos, but also notice A LOT missing. 
After looking through the 'Photos" and 'Library' Tabs on the bottom of Google Photos, i realized that a lot of my data has apparently not been backed up. So i opened the gallery on my device to see what data I still have left here. 

It turns out the the ONLY Photos & Videos that were NOT deleted from my device by the 'Free up space' option are the ones that ARE backed up to Google Photos, and are STILL in the Gallery of my Device. And the ONLY Photos & Videos that WERE deleted from my Device are the ones that Google Photos DID NOT back up, and are now nowhere to be found.
It seems like the 'Free up space' option did the opposite of what it was supposed to do. It deleted the data that wasn't backed up, and left alone the data was backed up.


I have checked my gallery's trash, Google Photos trash, and my devices trash, and I cannot find the lost Photos & Videos anywhere. I also looked at the other google accounts that I am logged into on my phone, in case the data was backed up to there, but no luck. I also looked through the 'My Files' app of my device, but the only files there are again only the ones that I still have in my devices gallery, as well as the Google Photos app.

I am somewhat at a loss at what to do from here. After a quick google research, I learned that using most 3rd party data-recovery programs would void my devices warranty, so that probably isn't an option either. Any help or tips would be greatly appreciated.

The Google Photos app on your device shows (i) photos uploaded to the active account, and (ii) photos that are stored on your device. Thus using "Free up space" should not make a difference in the app: you will see the same photos, either backed up or stored on the device. 
When you have more than one account, and for example are signed in to account A but have "Backup and sync" set to back up to account B. Then you will NOT see what is uploaded to account B because you are signed in to account A. Is that a possible explanation in your case?
