When I return to my albums again the dates and times are completely incorrect so that uploading a new picture will put it completely in the wrong chronological order. On inspecting my pictures, the dates on some of them seem to be completely out of whack!!

Welcome to the Google Photos Help Forum.

I do understand the inconvenience as the dates and time-zones of your Google Photos are showing differently.

However, Google Photos should show the correct date when a photo is uploaded. Also, it should not have the date retained and it should not effect the timezone.

In the meantime, please check the below steps to change the date and time stamps of your Google Photos:

On your computer, go to photos.google.com.
Place your cursor over a photo or video. To select the items you want to update, click Select.
At the top right, click More.
Click Edit date & time. If you selected more than one item, you'll see two options.To specify a date and time for the first item and automatically adjust the dates and times for the other items as relative to that, click Shift dates & times.
To set the same date and time for all the items you selected, click Set one date & time.
Follow the instructions to finish.

Thank you for your response. I am certain it was intended in good faith, but it has had the effect of feeling me a little more frustrated.

When I upload my photos they do have the correct date and timezone. It is only after I return to upload more photos and maintain my chronological order do I notice that the dates and the timezone are completely l messed up.

I appreciate as you say that the date information SHOULD be retained after upload....but what SHOULD have and what DOES happen are vastly different. What IS happening is that the dates are shifting and I can find no logical reason why this is the case.

Thank you also for outlining all the steps to modify the date and time. I have used this process several times and it is tedious to say the least.

The bottom line is that the date and timezone for a photo should be retained after upload! There is no good reason why this should change.

Are we able to verify please that there is a bug with this and determine what Google is doing to fix it?

My guess is that you camera-folder is blocked due to some corrupt very short video (a one second shot) or something alike.

Probably wise to install the Google Files app in order to able to inspect the real contents of the camera-folder, because what is called "Camera" in the Google Photos app, is not the real camerafolder, but the DCIM-folder which contains more folders, also other folders - eg for screenshots.

You did not tell that your camerafolder is on sd instead of locally and apparently that causes your problem.

But I don't use or ever will need a sd, so I have no experience with that situation.

Following is text from the official Google Photos Help page about deleting and restoring photos and videos:

If you deleted an item and want it back, check your trash to see if it’s there.

On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Photos app .
And check the Trash .
Click Restore

If the item is not in your trash, it may be permanently deleted and cannot be recovered.

You may also try to get a local professional to recover the photos from your phone storage,

but sorry to say Google cannot do anything about it.

You cannot hide photos in google photos the most you can do is move the photo to archive. Then you can find it in the archive folder.

The Locked Folder is an option if you have a Pixel 3 through Pixel 5 phone. The update started rolling out a few days ago for Pixels. Also your Google account can't be a managed account meaning a parent/guardian or an administrator is over your account.

If you aren't using a Pixel then it'll be a while before that option is available. The best you can do is put photos in the Archive.
