Hello Joe,
 
Head over to https://one.google.com/storage/management and check if the storage is in any of the trash places, or large files in Gmail, Drive & Photos, or just below in Unsupported videos. This should give a clue on where the storage is being used.
 
Up until the 31st May you can Recover storage at  https://photos.google.com/settings to reduce the storage used by Google Photos to zero.
 
From June 1st new HQ uploads will use storage at a reduced size, HQ upload before June 1st remain free

The algorithms Google Photos uses to compress photos and videos to High Quality are irreversible and can't be undone. Therefore, if you compress some photos or videos without keeping separate copies of the originals, you won't be able to download the originals.
 
Prior to compressing any photos or videos with Google Photos, be sure to make copies and keep them stored elsewhere other than in Google Photos or storage space Google Photos can access.

Hello Nate, how were those old photos uploaded to your Google Drive? Was it through Google Photos or through Google Drive?
 
If it was through Google Drive, then go to Google Photos settings and enable Google Drive. This would display your Google Drive photos in Google Photos.

Nate has used the Google Photos folder for uploading old stuff, while that (optional) folder only is meant to be used by Google for shwoing what is uploaded to Google Photos directly - either via the smartphone app or via some desktop app. 
So switching-on the option to show Google Drive in Photos will not help him, because that folder is excluded by that option. So he has to move the contents to a folder created outside the GP-folder, bt only the old contents.

Would you like to share the photos by link from Google Photos to some other app? Or from another app to Google Photos?
 
In general, sharing by link doesn't take up additional storage space. When the app or platform that holds the photos shares by link, it creates a way for accessing the shared photos, it doesn't make copies of those photos.

The thing is, the link only works as long we have the photos in the memory's phone.

But them, this raises another question: during this time, is occupying online quota? Or this only happens if I put the pictures / videos inside an online gallery?
...but if I only share them without put them in any of my photo galleries?

I did some tests with images stored only in the memory of a mobile device.

If I share them by link Google Photos uploads the photos to my library, makes an album that contains them, and returns the URL of the album. Now the photos occupy online quota. As soon as I remove the photos from the device, the online copies are removed and they no longer occupy online quota.

There's a possible source of confusion. Also when you share a single photo by link, Google Photos makes a new album (likely what you call a gallery) containing just that photo, even if you don't explicicly create anl album.

Albums are just containers that don't take up space. What takes up space is media, i.e. any photos or videos the album contains.

Thanks for your query.
 
You can add a person through the following steps.
 
Tap to open the photo which contains unidentified faces & then slide up or tap the three dots.
If the app had failed to include some faces in that picture, then you will see a prompt "XX faces available to add".
Here is a screenshot of one such suggestion
 
Tap the edit icon at the extreme right edge. (An icon of a pencil circled in the screenshot above).
 
That will show identified faces in square boxes & their thumbnails at the bottom.
Tap on the + sign on each thumbnail. 
Then the app will show you all the identified faces till that time.
You can select the right one.
 
If not, tap the + sign at the top right corner of the screen.
That would create a new grouping altogether.
 
Once created, the app may take some time to bring all the related pictures to this new grouping.
Otherwise, you can go through the collection & add the photos to the newly created group, manually, through the same steps as described above

Please note that, due to a variety of reasons, not all files can be recovered - but you can try!
 
1. Items deleted from your photos.google.com are stored in trash for 60 days and then are Auto-Deleted from trash and can not be recovered.
 
2. Items deleted manually from photos.google.com/trash can not be recovered.
 
3. Items deleted from your YouTube Channel can not be recovered.
 
4. Items deleted from your Gmail are stored in trash for 30 days and then are Auto-Deleted from trash and can not be recovered.
 
5. Items manually deleted from Gmail trash can not be recovered.
 
6. Items deleted from your Google Drive  will be stored in Drive Trash for 30 days and then be Auto-Deleted from Trash and can not be recovered.
 
1).If you are using a regular personal account
You will have to contact a Google Drive Specialist who *MAY* be able to restore it. Use this link:
