Are you trying to delete some photos?

Or, are you trying to clean up the cached data of the Photos app?

In any case, please reinstall the Google Photos app through the following steps.

On your Android phone, open the Settings.

Tap Apps and notifications.

Tap Show all apps.

Tap Google Photos.

Tap Storage and cache.

Tap Clear storage.

Next, uninstall the Google Photos app.

Power off the phone & then restart.

Install the latest version of the Google Photos app through the Play Store.

Log into your profile & see whether that helps to overcome the current problem.

I recommend that you try to locate the phone with Android's Find My device tool https://www.google.com/android/find If the photos are not here https://photos.google.com (be sure to sign in with all your Google accounts if you have more than one) nothing can unfortunately be done to recover them.

Open the Photos app
Pinch the screen to show the Month view
Long press the month to select the whole month
Tap Share and select Save to device
Repeat for other months or select more months at a time

Once all photos are downloaded, delete the Google Photos app and check on Apple Photos that you have all your photos.

Once confirmed, go to photos.google.com and delete all the Google Photos copies. Or leave them online for backup and reduce the storage to zero at Google Photos Settings - Tap here and use Recover storage.

My Pixel 2 XL was having issues with some functions in Photos, such as sharing pics and viewing shared pics (shared directly through Photos), so my first troubleshooting steps were to toggle backup/sync on and off, and clear the app data and cache for Photos. This didn't help. I uninstalled updates for it and tried the same thing, still no help. I then tried to deleted all the cached/saved photos on my phone, uninstalled Photos, then reinstalled to allow it to resync everything. This didn't work at all, and instead just leaves me with a blank photo gallery with the message "Getting photos..." at the top. I let this sit in this state, plugged into power and on wifi for a couple days, but it never did anything.

My next step was to factory reset the phone and start fresh. I did this, set everything back up, but my Photos is still stuck just showing the "Getting photos..." at the top.

If I go into Settings->System->Backup. Everything is backing up fine except for Photos & videos. That one is stuck with the message "Waiting to backup".

The Photos app is acting like it can't talk to Google at all. The Albums tab is blank. The Shared tab is empty (should show other things shared with me). In the slide-out menu, some items act funky, like "Add partner account" gives the message "This feature is currently unavailable". Clicking Photo Books brings up a page that just says "Unable to connect". But all other apps on the phone are working normally.

I've seen other posts online with similar symptoms, many of them seem to have been Samsung devices and were resolved by either removing or formatting the SD card. The Pixel 2 XL obviously doesn't have an SD card to try that fix.

My photos account has been empty for a month (the trash too), but it is taking up 5 GB of room...which is really annoying. Especially after it took two months of effort to delete the photos because Google is trying to force people to buy storage..

I am using about 5 GB for Gmail merely and at the start of 2022, I will delete all mail from 2020.

You can do the same, also for Photos and/or Drive as far as you have GB's there also.

PS: if you have switched-on the option to have Google Photos synced to Google Drive in the very past to have an additional backup for free, the Google Photos folder may have taken over your deleted GB's from Photos because that service was stopped in 2019. You can delete the remaining Google Photos folder on Drive safely, unless that folder still is synced with your pc. Then you will need to stop that syncing in the Backup & Sync app on your pc (in the Drive section of this app).

And yes, Rinus, Google *is* trying to force people to buy storage because they are making it difficult to manage, view, or delete files which makes it easier to accumulate 15+ GB of storage...meaning you then need to purchase more storage. They don't allow you to view file sizes, sort by file size, delete in bulk, receive support, etc. That's a serious issue.

Problem: the Google Photos app is not syncing properly. Appears to be stuck "Getting photos..." (see attached photo). Local photos on device show in app. Cloud photos show when searching. In the "Albums" tab, some cloud photos show in the top suggested search boxes (see attached photo).

Devices: appears to be happening when logging into the latest Google Photos app on both iPhone 6 and 8 on iOS 11.3 and Pixel 2 XL on Android 8.1/April-2018-update.

What I have tried:

1. Clear cache/data, reinstall updates, re-log in.

2. Remove Google account from all other devices except one phone.

3. Multiple different (good) WiFi networks and cell data networks.

4. Complete factory reset of phone and clean install of all apps.

5. Deleted all local photos off phone so nothing local should need to be indexed.

6. Disabled backup in Google Photos and "Getting photos..." is still present.

Ideas: could it be a server issue with my account? Corrupt file that got uploaded (I believe issue first appeared after attempting to open a Google Photos shared album link sent to me via SMS, album would not open).

UPDATE: I gave it about 24 hours and it finally seems to be back to normal. If you have the same issue as me with syncing I'd suggest trying to be patient and give it more time. 24 hours was with no photos on a factory reset device so there's a chance there was a corrupt file that was holding up the process and my factory reset did help, but there's no way for me to know. Good luck!

Please review the following information taken from previously recommended answers in case there are any options you haven't yet tried.

1. Check your online account - photos.google.com

If your photos were successfully uploaded to your online Google Photos account they may be available there. Try visiting photos.google.com and searching for them. If you have more than one Google account, check all of them.

2. Check the Google Photos trash - photos.google.com/trash

Once you delete photos from your Google Photos account, they're moved to Trash for the next 60 days. If you deleted them by mistake you can always restore them from the Trash folder within those 60 days. Here's the link explaining how to recover them from Trash. If you have more than one Google account, check the trash for all of them.

If you accessed the Trash and manually sent the photos for permanent deletion, or if the 60 days expired, there is no way to recover them from Google Photos.

3. Check the Google Drive trash - drive.google.com/trash

If you deleted a file from the Drive trash you will need to contact a Drive Specialist directly to see if they can recover it:

In a browser, like Chrome, go to the Google Drive Help Center.
At the top right, click Contact us.
Choose your issue and how you'd like to contact us.

4. Review other options

if you previously used Picasa, visit picasaweb.google.com and search for your photos.
check get.google.com/albumarchive to see if there are any hidden albums containing posts to other Google apps
have you made any backups of the photos on your phone, camera, computer, or elsewhere?
there is a small chance that you can restore the photos using a recover deleted photos app (Android). I haven't used them myself so have no specific recommendations. There may well be more app options if you visit the appropriate app store and try other search terms. I don't see any similar apps on the iOS store, but you could check yourself.
If you ever shared the photos with anyone else, it's possible they may have a copy they could share back or send to you.

Yes. If you delete your device's pictures and you have made a copy of them you'll be able to print them.

To make sure you have your backup enter the website photos.google.com with your user and password. If you see the pictures there it means the backup is ok and you can delete them from your device.

To do so you can use the Free Up Space option in Google Photos or entry Photos and go to the picture and then move it upwards, you'll see the button Delete from device.

Nee hoor Amanda, alleen wat is op die tablet zelf is opgeslagen aan foto's en filmpjes gaat verloren. Dat kun je zien in een Galerie-app.

Ik weet niet of dat opruimen ook geldt voor allerlei apps die je zelf hebt toegevoegd.

Je kunt beter eerst op de website van Google Fotos (photos.google.com) controleren wat er veilig bij Google is opgeslagen. Je moet dan wel inloggen met het Google (Gmail) account dat op je telefoon en op die table wordt gebruikt om die foto's bij google op te slaan.

Dat kun je zien in de Fotos-app als je via je profiel naar instellingen > backup gaat.

Google photos show in most cases the "Date taken", but of course only when available in the photo. When the photo has no EXIF data Google often uses the upload date.

When you change a date in the info of Google Photos it is only changed in Google's database, not in the photo.

However, you have not clarified whether you are sending a screenshot of a scanned document or something else.

If you photograph the same document, there can be distortions because of incorrect focusing, insufficient light etc.

However, if you load the scanned document that is saved in the memory of the phone, then taking a screenshot replicates that perfectly.

Another reason can be, the recipient is intending to have screenshots in PNG format only & not highly compressed JPEG format.

You can restore the photos yourself, provided you have not emptied the Bin.

To do so, you can follow these steps.

Tap library view in the Photos app.

Tap the Bin icon at the top right corner in the 2nd row.

Long press the first picture & then stroke down while still in a pressed condition, to select a batch.

Then, tap the restore option at the bottom.

To restore these pictures to your phone's gallery, either you can download that one by one through Google Photos or use the Google 1 app.

Download the Google 1 app. You can join that even if you do not have paid subscription.

Next, tap Settings.

Tap restore from your backup. Select Google Photos & tap "restore".

You can restore up to 200 most recent photos to the device.
