No, still not there. I noticed on the third upload attempt after it said upload complete there was a universal "stop" symbol in the box (circle with a thick horizontal bar in the middle). As it takes over 1/2 hr to attempt to load, I will probably discontinue trying unless you have any other ideas. Thank you. ( ⛔️ - like this only grayscale no color)

Hi Victoria,

Welcome to the Google Photos Product Help Forum!

Your problem is probably because the images are in a shared album and not in your "Photos" stream / library.

If you select the images of interest then select the "Add to Library" icon (to the right of the pulldown in your sample image).. the images will probably be visible at the top of https://photos.google.com/u/0/search/_tra_  then select  them from here and try the plus and look for "Collage:"..

If only some are visible at the top of https://photos.google.com/u/0/search/_tra_ then find them all in https://photos.google.com/u/0/

If you get a chance, let me know if this works or if you have other insights or questions.

Even if you "Add to library" you need to change views (e.g., you can't do it from the Shared Album) you need to do it from https://photos.google.com/u/0/ (or https://photos.google.com/u/0/search/_tra_ or possibly some other places but not the shared album)..

I have had this issue come up with every Pixel phone I've used, Pixel, Pixel 2, Pixel 3, now 3a. 

Camera app is ignorant to memory, runs right into the ceiling (instead of having code that continually checks for head room). 1.3G of video is there, but cannot play because of whatever file info is supposed to be recorded when I clicked the stop button.

    • Empty the trash
  2. tap the account icon at the top right

It used to show portrait photos with a blurred out section on either side of the screen to make up the space. Now they won't display at all. I even tried to make a Favorites album with nothing but portrait photos to test it out, since Google says that no matter what photos in your favorites folder will play on ambient mode. It didn't display any of the photos, it just went to default photos from the internet. Did Google eliminate Ambient mode's ability to cast portrait photos?

My experience is similar; but I think it might be that the latest updates has changed intentionally. I must admit I do prefer the photos to fill the screen and now I think a lot of portrait photos are split on the screen so you see 2 similar photos instead of just 1.

I too experienced the frustration of seeing my 'non-standard'aspect photos disappear from the ambient mode of Chromecast – BUT I found aworkaround!
For those of us who don't either own Photoshop or have aclue how to use it, here's a simple operation that converts all 'portrait/non-standard'images into a Landscape photo exactly the way Google used to display on yourscreens until recently. It does involve downloading the free version of a softwareprogram called PhotoPad, but the results are worthy of a little effort:
Once installed, go to your Pictures folder and right clickon your chosen image. That will open the menu so choose 'Edit with PhotoPad'.
Select 'Crop' from the menu bar above your image.
On the RHS, under Crop amend the Aspect Ratio to 16 x 9 fromthe drop-down menu.
Select Landscape Orientation.
Place crop-shaped cursor to the upper left edge of yourimage and drag across to select a landscape-shape that extends across the wholewidth. This area can be moved up or down your image – I normally use somewherearound the middle.
Now click 'Apply' on the RHS.
Select 'Tools' in the black menu bar at the top, then select'Effects' in the bar below it. You should find that 'Blur' is the first optionunder the 'Image Effects' drop-down menu. Click on it.
You should have a 16 x 9 Landscape image with a slidingscale on the RHS. If you move the pointer on that scale to the right you willsee your image blur dramatically! I normally take it to around 75%. You nowhave your bottom layer.
Select the 'Tools' icon next to the 'Effects' one on themenu bar above your image. In the 'Overlays' section from the drop-down menuselect 'Image'. This will offer you a choice of all the images in your Picturesfolder. Now select your original chosen image and click 'Open'. This will placeyour top layer squarely into the middle of your bottom layer – one sharp imagesitting on a blurred image.
Select 'Home' on the black menu bar at the top and 'Save AsJPEG'. PhotoPad will offer you the opportunity to purchase the full version,but you can just select 'I will purchase later'. You can now choose to selectwhere to save your final image. Job done!

Hmm, I don't really consider editing every portrait photography to be a practical workaround...
This is just a poorly implemented feature. Google is saying is more important to fill your TV screen than pick the photos that are important to you...
I'm always puzzled why Google can do some really clever software and then come out with something as half baked as this!
I've been trying to use my Chromecast to show pictures for a memorial, and this "feature" means the Ambient screensaver doesn't work as a solution. Casting a Google Photos slideshow doesn't work either, because the fixed slide interval of 3 seconds is too fast to view the slides.
I haven't found a good alternative. Any ideas?

Not going to edit all my vertical/portrait photos to make them 'fit'.

This wasn't a problem a couple of years ago, and then suddenly it was 'necessary' to show more than one photo to 'fill the space'. Then it was back to normal for a while, and now vertical shots are suddenly completely 'out of bounds'?

Yes! Please, please, please fix this issue. Every morning and evening we view family photos via Chromecast with our toddler while we get him ready for the day, or ready for bed. This is how we keep him familiar with family and friends we very rarely see. Unfortunately, we only have portrait photos of some of these people and it has literally been months since we've been able to show our toddler these photos. This can't be a difficult fix! Please send us an update ASAP! We've waited long enough.

Welcome to the Google Photos Product Help Forum!

If used correctly, Google Photos should take relatively little storage on your phone. Some data is required for cached images, settings, etc.

Using it correctly, means (among other things):
  • Opening the Google Photos periodically, and confirming that you see the "Backup complete" message.
  • Not using "Google Photos" and "iCloud Photo Library" simultaneously.
  • Using "Free up space" in Google Photos when you want to remove most of the images from you phone.
If you want to speed up the process of making space available, you can go to the "Recently Deleted" album in the iOS Photos app and empty it..  Don't do this unless you are positive that everything is already in  https://photos.google.com/u/0/

To give impression on normal Android (I don't know about Apple). 

I have about 65K pictures in Google-cloud and my app uses about  1.67 GB for housekeeping. 
Also because it needs to show your local content like any Gallery, but that is very tiny in my case because I upload from computer mainly.

I am having the same problem on my tablet.. I simply cannot use Google Photos anymore because it leaves me without device space. Had to show come colleges some photos on my phone instead of the tablet because of that (the phone has more internal memory, if only we could move to app to sd cards). Google please fix it!

SD is for data only, not for storing apps unless others know better how to do that. 
So you simply need to use the app on your phone for uploading to Google. 
On you tablet you should switch-off the app and use the Chrome-browser for viewing https://photos.google.com
But after some years you always a new device for much more then Google Photos only.
