Question: Photos back up before June 1st are still counted towards my quota!!

With the new storage limit policy now in place, Google is now telling me I exceeded the storage limi…

With the new storage limit policy now in place, Google is now telling me I exceeded the storage limit of 15GB by 6GB (i.e. I have total of 21GB of storage used). However, according to Google my total storage on Photos is 8GB, although 99% of it was uploaded before June 1st in high resolution and therefore, according to Google, should NOT be counted towards my quota. So if ignornig everything that was uploaded before June 1st in high resolution I'm still under the 15GB quota. Is this a bug??

Hello Yan,
 
You may have uploaded Original size photos which do count.  Only High Quality uploads qualified for free storage.
 
Storage may be reduced by going to https://photos.google.com/settings and using the Recover storage option.
 
Head over to https://photos.google.com/quotamanagement  This should give a clue on where the storage is being used. Large photos and videos >5MB are listed and can be reviewed by tapping on the thumbnail to open then select the (i)nfo icon to see more detail about files.
 
If you need to subscribe to Google One you can Create a family group then share the storage between members and it can be used in addition to their own 15GB
 
Review backup settings on Mobile
  1. Open Google Photos .
  2. At the top right, tap your account profile photo or initial  Photos settings .
  3. Tap Back up & sync.
  4. Check your settings:
    • Back up & sync: Make sure "Back up & sync" is turned on.
Review your upload size to the web
  1. On your computer, open photos.google.com/settings.
  2. Select High quality or Original quality for future uploads.
Review backup settings for the Backup and Sync computer app
  1. On your computer, download and install Backup and Sync.
  2. Sign in to the Google Account that you use for Google Photos.
  3. Select to back up only photos or videos, or all files.
  4. Select any folders you want to back up.
  5. Under “Photo & video upload size,” select your upload size

You can find old images by scrolling to the bottom or searching.  You can search for "2015" you will find all images with a 2015 probably plus some extraneous stuff.  Then select the images you want to delete and tap the Trash icon.
 
 
Remember, "High Quality" images UPLOADed prior to June 1, 2021 DO NOT count against your Google storage quota.

Welcome to Google Photos forum!
In some cases, it is not the Android version that affects, but its firmware or software shell.  In this case, it is sometimes impossible to install apps.  
In addition, the appearance of such a problem is affected by: 
• this device does not have Google Play Protect certification;  
• This is an Android G device;  
• the device has custom firmware or other changes in its Software. 

 Also, an error in your account affects: if you have another Google account, then try to open it in the Google Play Store, select Google Lens, and try to download.  
If everything went well, then unfortunately, this is an error in your main account.  


▶ How can you solve the problem: open device settings → delete data for all applications / cache → restart the device → try downloading again

I understand, you are expecting to get back the pictures from the date 1st June 2021 (and not 1st June 20121)
 
However, had you backed up the pics to Google Photos?
Are you not finding the deleted pictures there?
 
If so, did you delete the pics through Google Photos? or using some Gallery app on your phone?
If you have deleted through Google Photos, then you may still find those in the bin.
The Bin icon becomes visible through the library view. Please have a look into the bin & recover everything.

However, any app developer updates an app either to remove some security flaws in that or to provide some enhanced features.
If you keep the auto update on, all the apps will get updated automatically once you are connected to the internet. Then you will never get such notifications.
 
In any case, this is a peer support forum where the queries are answered by volunteers who are users like you.
There aren't any Google employees or representatives reading the posts.
 
You need to communicate your expectations about the required improvements in the app through the help & feedback route.

Took 7 pix on Android phone. As expected, automatically mirrored to cloud. Discovered that Google's Description field is proprietary and ignores EXIF. So manually renamed pix, on phone.
Now: modified filenames appear correctly on Photos app (on phone) and Samsung's Gallery app.
BUT - Google Photos (web view) ignores those changes so I had to share them manually to get usable filenames I wanted.

When a photo is uploaded to Google Photos with a Caption or Description, Google will extract that Description, store it, and show it in the Description field. You can edit that description in Google Photos, but that affects only the text in Google's database. The EXIF data remain unchanged.

OK. Thanks for explaining clearly. I will however comment:

1. IMHO IPTC:Caption-Abstract is a perfectly usable and standardmetadata field for this purpose. It eludes me why Google feels compelled to store descriptive text in a wholly non-standard fashion, and AFAIK Photos does not allow putting text in the appropriate EXIF field. Just for grins, Picasa did indeed use that IPTC field.


2. So, I modify a file name, and that action "protects" against Photos being helpful and backing up that file to the cloud.

OTOH I guess you get what to pay for, and Photos is "freeware.
