Due to lack of storage space, backing up my photos from my pixel is a frequent task I follow every couple of months.
A week ago, after backing up my most recent photos into an external hard drive by copy-pasting my images, I noticed a group of grey blank images throughout the backed-up photos. I attempted to view the image which led to my windows freezing. As I was not able to exit the image due to the frozen window, I attempted closing the file through the task manager which also froze upon opening.
I left the computer for 30 minutes to see if it would unfreeze on its own which it did not and forced shut down through the power button on my case.
Upon restarting, the drive which I had backed up my files (and opened the photos) was no longer found detectable.
Since this case, I have tried various methods such as using a different port, cable, and computer but only have had one method of success in detecting the drive. This was through inspecting the disk manager where it identified my drive however showed "unknown" and "not initialized".
When opening the manager it should also be mentioned a popup appears stating "The request failed due to a fatal device hardware error."

I believe the attempt in opening the corrupt image from my pixel may have also corrupted my drive somehow. Since then I have unplugged my drive and have not touched in the potential for the drive further damaged.ss moments and would very highly appreciate any professional advice on my situation.

My drive is a 95% full 3TB hard drive which contains priceless moments and would very highly appreciate any professional advice on my situation.

Nevertheless, hard drives are prone to get damaged for many reasons & that's why cloud backups are becoming popular.

I suggest you contact some reliable data recovery service to get back the contents from the broken hard drive.

The photos shows after a day or so in the google photos app. Even after that photos are not getting backed up.

library in google photos shows nothing. It should show the device folder. The search tab also comes blank doesn't show the faces or places...

In the Downloads-folder on the Library-page only the pictures are shown which are compatible with Google Photos. So the additional pictures shown in your Files-app are not suitable to get added to albums on Google Photos. Maybe it are very small thumbnails.

I've downloaded the picture from the  last 'year memories' that Google photo shows on the upper level. It is absolutely normal picture.
I did because I could not find a way to add the picture to album from this very nice collection that Google photo offers on the upper part of the page.

But you did tell about the source, because these memory-pictures already are in your stream and that was the reason that they are not shown. They should be added to your album from the stream, so you need to to find back the original picture in the date-range shown in memories.

Normally you can't download if the original pictures still are present on phone because then you are looking to the same files. Probably that is the same for such pictures shown in memories.

If the original pictures are not present on phone anymore, downloads from the Photos-pages go into the folder Restored which is not separately shown on the Library page, but part of the Camera-folder. 
Probably this also is the case for pictures downloaded from Memories, but I can't test that because I have them switched-off in order to have a clean top on my Photos-page. 
Can't add more :-)
 
PS: the Camera-folder also may contain other folders, like for screenshots and photoscans. In fact it is the DCIM-folder in the Android-tree.

The only way I was able to duplicate the symptom is when I had no connection. Make sure you have good WiFi or cell data available.

Try temporarily restarting in safe boot mode to minimize other software interference:
1. Press power button
2. Long press Power off
3. Select restart in safe boot

After restarting, reconnect to WiFi or cell data, and verifying you have a good connection, try changing wallpaper again.  

Can you change wallpaper to a factory image option? Or is the problem only when choosing Photos?  Try taking a new image with your camera and seeing if that can be used as a wallpaper.

If symptoms improve on safe boot mode, restart phone normally. Check again to see if all is well or if problem returned. If it had returned, then look to the Play Store and make sure all updates are completed.

I tried what you suggested, though unfortunately it did not work, the same problem as last time occurred. I have a stable wifi connection and the latest update of Google Photos, and even when I tried using a picture I had from with my camera on safe mode, it wouldn't load the picture. I cannot change my wallpaper to a factory image, as the only options available are my photos and live wallpapers (which I do not have). This seems to be a tricky problem to solve, so I do appreciate the feedback!

I don't know what you mean by 'free up' 15 GB of photos.
If you use the free up space option (Google Photos > Profile icon > Free up space), that only removes locally stored images on your phone that Photos considers backed up to the cloud. It does not affect image quota of images stored on Google Photos.

If you delete an image on Google Photos to free up space, then, yes they will be deleted from Google Photos.

Before you delete any images, please read the help article here so you fully understand what happens to your images https://support.google.com/photos/answer/6128858?hl=en&ref_topic=6128848&co=GENIE.Platform%3DAndroid&oco=1

I recommend using Google Takeout ( https://takeout.google.com ) to make a ZIP archive that you can then download to a computer to back up images before continuing so you have a copy of your images somewhere.

If you pay for additional storage, and then decide to end your subscription, there are consequences.
If you cancel while you're using more than 15GB of storage, you'll notice some restrictions. For example:
  • Gmail: You won't be able to send or receive messages. Messages sent to you will be returned to the sender.
    • Starting June 1, 2021: If you remain inactive or go over your storage quota for 2 years or longer, all of your emails may be deleted.
  • Google Drive: You won't be able to sync or upload new files. You won't be able to create new files in Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drawings, Forms, and Jamboard. Until you reduce your storage usage, neither you nor anyone else can edit or copy your affected files. Syncs between your computer's Google Drive folder and My Drive will stop. 
    • Starting June 1, 2021: If you remain inactive or go over your storage quota for 2 years or longer, your content within the affected product(s) may be deleted.
  • Google Photos: You won't be able to upload photos and videos in Original quality. If you want to add any more photos and videos, you can either upload or back up in High quality (lower resolution), or turn off Back up & sync.
    • Starting June 1, 2021: You also won't be able to upload photos and videos in High quality or Express quality if you are out of storage. And if you remain inactive or go over your storage quota for 2 years or longer, all of your photos and videos may be deleted.

To upload the pics in the WhatsApp folder, please make the backup & sync on for that folder. Once done, the app will upload everything.
After doing so, please select all the pics through the "Recently added" option & include those in a new album.
Now, to hide these pics from the gallery view, archive all. Nevertheless, the pics will continue to appear in the new album.

Google unfortunately ignores the folder structure on mobile devices and computers. Like सीके suggested you add the WhatsApp photos/videos to an album. When you do the same with the Camera photos (and other folders if wanted) you do not need to use the timeline anymore, and archiving may not be needed. 
 
I think that the most reliable way to photos/videos to an album is to select them in the Google Photos app in the folder found under Library > Photos on device, and add them to the album. You can repeat this action for example monthly. By "pinching" you get the photos grouped per month. 
 
Note that you cannot "archive" photos/videos from within an album (why???). 
 
To find WhatsApp photos/videos:
  • "Recently added" is an option but only when there are no other photos added that day. By the way: on mobile "Recently added" is under "Search" but in the web app they moved it out of "Search" to "Explore" (why ???). 
  • WhatsApp photos have names like IMG-20201231-WA0000.jpg. 
    WhatsApp videos have names like VID-20190802-WA0001.mp4 
    You can for example search with WA IMG or WA VID or other terms (JPG MP4). 
    I am not sure how reliable this is, but it seems to work here.

Google photos should occupy zero space for the activities up to 31st May 2021 if you have chosen to save the pics in High-Quality format.

That page will offer two options a) Purchase additional storage or b) Recover storage. 
The second option will offer to convert all original quality content to high-quality
Tap/click on that & then all the pictures in original quality will be converted to high-quality.
 
Also, I suggest, you take these actions through a desktop. That will eliminate the problem you are facing now.

Was this solved? I have exactly same issue for a while. In the meantime i changed the phone and i tried on other TV/chromecast. None of this helped. 
No problem to cast YouTube, Spotify etc., but when i try to cast google photos, it attemps to connect after pressing an icon, but it only disconnects the current service in use on TV. The connection with Google photos "breaks" immediatly after without showing anything on the screen. No error number or any clue what is wrong.

You should be aware that this is a very old thread - so the problems in the past may differ from modern problems.
And you should be aware that Google Photos is no streaming service like Youtube, but a screen-mirroring service. And because of the high resolution screens of modern smartphones, you really need a fast internet connection in the neighbourhood of your TV. 
I almost have identical problems with my modern Samsung, but not with my oldmodish low resolution tablet with Android-6 and I have weak internet in that corner of our house. 
We can't solve such problems, so you should consult the Chromecast forum ("community").

Since you did not back up anything to Google Photos, there is no way to get something back through Google Photos.
 
However, you may install to your Android device a deleted photo recovery app (be sure to not pick one that requires rooting) https://play.google.com/store/search?q=recover%20deleted%20photos&c=apps;
and run a scan for anything to recover.

If you did a wipe reset, then, unfortunately, there is no way to get back the photos, even with a file recovery app.

Any cloud backup is meant for handling such situations. Regretfully, you did not turn on backup & sync.

Further, the newer Android version allows the use of the phone in guest mode. Although, that doesn't give any access to the original content, at least that allows some time to guess & try the password.

There is a double fault. You forgot the phones unlock password. I can't understand how that can happen. We unlock the phone a hundred times a day & it's unlikely to forget unless someone played the mischief with you by changing the password.

But then, all the latest devices provide for biometric aka fingerprint unlock. had you not gone for that?
 
Second, not using the as on date free service of cloud backup is another error.
 
Further, almost every phone manufacturer provides some kind of backup utility to save the content on desktop or cloud. That backs up everything including the photos & videos. Did you go for that?

The text entry feature in Google Photos is rudimentary.
Nevertheless, you can bring the text to the bottom through a series of enter commands before hand. Once the cursor reaches the bottom, then start typing.
If you want to align the text to the left or right, add space before or after.
If you wish to have the text in small font, zoom in first & then start entering the text.
 
You may find all these steps irritating.
Nevertheless, you can suggest improved features through the help & feedback route.
Once a sufficient number of users request the same feature, that may become available later on.

Sorry to note the misunderstanding regarding the sync function.
Sync means that your photo library stays consistent across all devices that are signed in to your account with Google Photos.
 For example, deleting a photo from one device will delete it from everywhere, and editing a photo on the web will edit the photo on the original device
 
Nevertheless, any deleted picture is retained in the bin for sixty days.
 
If your delete action is recent, you will find all the items in the bin. The bin icon becomes visible in the library view. Tap that & recover everything available in the bin.
 
However, if your delete action has already crossed sixty days, or you have emptied the bin inadvertently, there is no way to recover anything through Google Photos.
