Most of my Google Photos are missing on the app on my phone but still show up on my laptop

I checked Google photos on my phone this morning to find that hundreds of them were missing from my library, for some reason only the pictures from 2 weeks until recently are all there, and it kept only about 30 random pictures from the past 5 years. I have always backed up and synced my photos to one account, I checked all of my accounts to be sure they didn't move or if I was signed into the wrong place, I checked the bin and the archive, but all of the pictures are just gone. I then signed into Google photos on my Chromebook and they are all there on my Chromebook, just not visible on my phone. Is there a way to fix this? And is there another place I can upload all of my photos to that I've taken so far just in case they go missing from my laptop as well? It would be great to have them both in Google's photos and in another spot in case of an emergency. Thank you!

Answer:

@Megan
If you would have a normal computer with enough diskspace, I would suggest to download your content. But Chromebooks generally have to less space, unless done in a very carefull way and after buying a small 1 TB usb-disk. So that's becomes a complex story. And using a secundary cloud will cause a lot of other problems.
About your phone: normally you only see the pictures on your phone and not the cloud like on your Chromebook - so my guess is that your phone fully is fed-up and hardly has no internal space for functioning well anymore - you can see that in the general settings under Storage etc. If you have less then 1 GB (1000 MB) free, you are in trouble.
So come back to report please.

Answer:

Hi there, thank you for the reply! I have 29 GB out of 32 GB available at the moment. I know it's not much but I only have the basics on my phone and I can't get rid of any more apps. I tried checking Google photos again after clearing caches and it's still not showing up. Should I delete the app and redownload? Or could that cause more problems or risk things actually being deleted?

Answer:

Sorry, you can't have 29 GB available in 32 GB - probably you mean that you have 3 GB available only and that is much too less. My Samsung A40 already has used 29 GB, but has more then 30 GB free space.
So you have probably an older or cheaper phone with too less storage capacity and that makes good operation of the consuming Photos-app problematic. That does not harm your collection in cloud, but you need to make more space first and that will be difficult.
Let me think about for a while.

Answer:

Hi there sorry I worded that incorrectly! I went through everything again and now I have used up 28.21 GB out of 32 GB, and this phone is only a few months old. This problem has never occurred before even when I had less space available than what I have now. Thanks for taking the time to think about it!

Answer:

@Megan
Thanks for fast reply (exception here).
I have to disappoint you: buying a new phone with only 32 GB memory on board is completely outdated - just its base already will occupy 25 GB and that always becomes more and more gradually. And shooting many pictures and some videos will add-up fast. That's why I have a simple Samsung with 64 GB.
So for the moment there only is one solution: making the consuming Photos-app a passive galery.
That's simple: go to general settings again, then to Apps, then to Photos. In Photos go to Storage > Management and switch-off all settings.
Then close all apps, restart the phone and install the simple Google Gallery Go app, That will show several device folders and if you shoot some new pictures, they will arrive in the Camera-folder. Then open that folder and select the good pictures, hit Share (lying V), choose Photos and choose Upload.
They will get stored at Google in high quality for taking low storage and you can use the editor in Photos on your Chromeboook to improve the pictures and add them to albums.
You also can use the Gallery app to delete old pictures and videos to keep enough space, because it still will be critical.
Good luck

Question: I'm not able to free up space

I'm trying to free up space but its not working the app keeps closing whenever I click on free up sp…

@Khushi
That simply means that the app is not able to carry-out this heavy task in a safe way - probably because of too less free space on you machine. You can check that in the general phone settings.
First close all apps and restart the phone.
then open the Photos-app and check under the profile-circle right-up if you are logged-in and if it is stated that backup is ready. Then close the app and install Google Files from the Playstore which is a very light app. After running its clean-up feature, just remove one or two fat old videos of several GB's large.
Then close the app and start Photos and try free-up space again.
Good luck

Question: How does the new feature that finds blurry photos, large videos etc... Work?

Just try - the selected pictures and video's are shown and then you can decide yourself which can be deleted to make more space in Google cloud.
But that hardly will help if most were uploaded in high quality before June 1.

Answer:

You asked: "Are the photos screened and selected automatically for me to see?"
And I answered: "Yes, just try".
Can't be more clear I think :-)
But then you can select what can be deleted to spare a tiny bit of space at Google.

PS: I am not sure if locals (if still present) are deleted then also, because I can't test that.

Question: How to download photos before a "Recover Storage"?

If I "Recover Storage", this will 30.8 GB of space. I'd like to download the originals of the photos…

Hi @Ben,

To Download all photos or videos
  1. On your computer, go to drive.google.com.
  2. Click Settings   Create a Google Photos folder.
  3. In My Drive, find and open the Google Photos folder.
  4. Select the folder you want to download.
  5. Click More  Select All Download.
If you would like instructions on how to download on Android or iOS, please visit the Help Centre article.

Keep in mind, 30GB of images might take a bit of time to download.

Answer:

That would download all the photos. Is there any way to only download the photos which would be compressed? Or even to just see which ones will be affected?

Answer:

The only way would be is in Google Drive, if you have the Google Drive connection set up.

In Google Drive, you can then search for 'Photos and images' in Google Drive that are over the 16MB size limit. You can then select a group of photos in there for downloading.

Answer:

This might take a bit to get your head around but read through this:

What happens when you change or delete a photo
  • If you edit photos in Google Photos, changes won't show in Google Drive.
  • When you delete a photo from Google Photos, it'll also get deleted from Google Drive.
  • If you delete a photo from Google Drive, it'll also get deleted from Google Photos.
  • If you delete from the Google Photos folder in My Drive:
    • If you delete individual photos or videos, they will be removed from Google Photos.
    • If you delete folders (including the Google Photos folder), photos and videos won't be deleted in Google Photos. This is to avoid deleting all your photos and videos by accident.
    • If you move photos from the Google Photos folder to a different folder and delete them from there, they'll also be deleted in Google Photos.
You can find this article at the Help Centre.

I personally have never used Google File Stream... so you might be best talking to either the Google Drive team or the Google for Edu team.
But from what I gather (from this article) "Drive File Stream streams all files and folders from the cloud.
This may not keep local copies of the files on your computer... and therefore might not help with what you are trying to achieve.

I recently got a new phone on June 2nd and all my old photos are now being counted towards the limited storage? I thought old photos uploaded before June 1st were not being counted? I uploaded them before June 1st originally so why is it that they are now being counted against me now that I got a new phone? Very confused.

Hello Jennifer,

You may have uploaded Original size photos which do count. Only High Quality uploads qualified for free storage.

Head over to https://photos.google.com/quotamanagement  This should give a clue on where the storage is being used. Large photos and videos >5MB are listed and can be reviewed.

Photos I upload to the Google Photos folder in my Google Drive used to show up on the dedicated Google Photos site... but images I've uploaded since 2nd April 2018 are not showing up in photos.google.com despite being in the right folder in my Drive.

I've seen multiple threads here outlining this problem, but none of them have a solution... Here's hoping!

I've tried the following:

- Turned off the 'Sync photos & videos from Google Drive' option in Photos Settings then after a while turned it on again

- Tried accessing photos.google.com in a new browser with cleared cache

Please note I am using a personal, not institutional, Google account (other threads say institutional accounts don't support this functionality).

Thousands of images uploaded in this way are still accessible in Photos... just not anything after April 2nd.

I use the Google Drive Backup & Sync App for Mac to upload photos to Drive. I haven't changed any settings on that since well before the problem started.

Any solutions gratefully received!

Thanks,

Will

Answer:

Hi PeteranDi,

Thank you very much for this suggestion! It's a successful work-around.

Photos added to a new folder in my Drive immediately appear on photos.google.com

Interestingly, even images added to a new sub-folder of my original Google Photos folder on drive appear on photos.google.com, even while images added to the Google Photos folder itself do not appear.

While this solution is a successful workaround for now, my original Google Photos folder continues to not sync to photos.google.com, and there is nothing to stop the newly-created folders that do currently sync randomly failing to sync at some future date.

This is clearly some sort of bug, hopefully the Drive/Photos team will look into it soon.

Thanks again for the helpful suggestion,

Will

Answer:

The problem is that if you add photos from gmail attachments, the only way to add them to google photos is to  click "save to drive" then choose google photos(organize). So basically if you get photos emailed to you as attachments, there is no way to safely add them to google photos unless you download the file, then re-upload it via googlephoto interface, but that is a huge pain especially on android compared to PC.

or am i missing something?

Answer:

I've tried all of this but haven't had any luck.  I put the photos in new folders.  There are still just some photos in Drive that won't appear in Google Photos (more don't appear on my iPhone than the desktop).  It seems that a great deal of them were photos that I had shared in the previous account they sat in.  Would that have anything to do with it?

Answer:

The best solution I've used for now is to create a manual folder on google drive called "upload to google photos" and put all gmail photo attachments in there, and then from time to time, download the whole folder and upload it to google photos en masse.
it's not pretty, but it seems to work.

Question: When my google photos where updated i lost 197 pictures. How can i get them back?

I lost 197 pictures disappeared. How can I get them back?

Hello Susan,

Thanks for posting in the Google Photos Help Forum.

I understand how important the photos are for you and I'll try my best to help. It can be possible that the photos weren't uploaded successfully to Google Photos (cloud) and also make sure you're logged in to Google Photos with the same Google Account that you used during the backup. Photos/videos that are not synced or backed up, will still appear in Google Photos and will have this icon  (which means not synced/backed up) or some photos/videos will also show up with the two arrows in a circle mean backup is in progress.

Once the upload is complete there will be no icon on any photos/videos. Often, many of us misinterpret that they are all backed up because the photos/videos show up in Google Photos and we over see the icons on each photo/video. If the photos/videos weren't backed up they cannot be deleted from the Google Photos library nor Trash.

In case, you are uploading a large amount of data (photos/videos), please know that it might take 24-48 hours for the photos and videos to sync across all devices. Please ensure to have 'Backup & sync' enabled on the Google Photos settings while you're backing up your photos and videos. To check is the content is backed up, login in to photos.google.com to checked for your backed up photos and videos.

However, if you're sure they were backed up, I recommend you looking for your video here:
If a photo/s is deleted from Google Photos, it would go to Trash/Bin for the next 60 days (after deletion). Unfortunately, if the photos aren't found in Trash or deleted from Trash, I'm afraid, you might not find them else where to recover them because Trash is the last resort to retrieve your lost/deleted photos.

Meanwhile, also try giving the below steps a try once again in a sequence to help resolve the issue:
  • Close the Google Photos app and re-launch it.
  • Sign out and sign back in to Google Photos with the same Google Account.
  • Clear App data:
    • Open your device's Settings app (not the Google Settings app).
    • Touch Apps.
    • Select Google Photos in the list.
    • Touch Clear data.
  • Update the Google Photos app on your Android phone:
    • Visit the Google Play Store.
    • Open Google Photos.
    • Touch on Update.
Let me know how it goes.

Best,
Amanda

Question: How do I upload my pics and videos to my laptop?

Connect to laptop and looking for files. Laptop says there are none.

Hi @James,

If you have uploaded your photos to Google Photos on your phone and then Freed up space, they will be now in the 'cloud'.

The easiest way to access them on your laptop is to view them within your internet browser on your laptop at photos.google.com.
And if you would like to use them locally on your computer, you can download them.

To download your photos to your computer:

Save a photo or video
  1. On your computer, go to photos.google.com.
  2. Select a photo or video
  3. Click More  Download. If the photo is already on your device, this option won't appear.
Download all photos or videos
  1. On your computer, go to drive.google.com.
  2. Click Settings   Create a Google Photos folder.
  3. In My Drive, find and open the Google Photos folder.
  4. Select the folder you want to download.
