Google photos only detects screenshots folder present on directory /storage/emulated/0/Pictures/Screenshots but not locating on directory /storage/emulated/0/DCIM/Screenshots.

Conclusion: Google photos should also check DCIM sub folders so that it would not treate the DCIM folder as a whole Camera folder.

You simply are right, but this problem goes on since years, also in Samsung phones etc. etc.

This would be no problem if shooting screenshots are a minor activity, but with daily use these pictures get scattered between your camera-pictures and then it becomes a tuff job to hide them by archiving.

So you should switch-off autobackup and use Google Gallery Go to move screenshots to another folder before switching-on backup again.

Can't help, but on some points Google is quite dumb - so it may take years before they listen to our feedbacks. Or never...

The photos app doesn't show the count of items in an album.

I suggest you visit the link https://photos.google.com/albums through any browser on your phone & log into your profile. There, the web version will display the correct count of pics in any album.

The Photos-app clearly shows the numbers within real albums, but not in the device folders straight under Picures on device on the Library-page. So apparently your folder with 3030 photos (how do you know that?) contains quite a large number of items which are not compatible with Google Photos and thereby not uploaded into the album. See suitable filetypes.

PS: photos placed in an album get backupped also and deleting the album will not remove the originals in the mainstream on the Photos-page. The album just contains references to these originals.

Good afternoon. If you took the videos with your phone, and those videos were backed up with the Google Photos app, they would also be visible and accessible when you visit the Google Photos website.

If they are not visible in the website, then they have not actually been backed up or they were backed up to a different account.

Also, since you took these videos with your phone, what did you do with the video files afterward? If they are not uploaded, you can initiate an upload at any time to back them up to Google Photos.

Thank you for your answer. I remember recording the videos and not being able to see a few of them for 5 minutes or so and then they were there after that. - This is I am talking about when I recorded those videos.

All the photos/videos are automatically backed up in one of the assigned accounts so I only free space when the media is backed up. I am sure there is a technical issue which I don't think I can solve from my end. I tried using apps that retrieve the permanently deleted files. Looked at the files through android file transfer connection. Didn't find anything.

Welcome to the Google Photos Help Forum.

To back up device folder:

Open Google Photos app.
Go to the More option (three horizontal lines icon).
Go to Settings.
Go to 'Back up & sync' option.
Go to 'Back up device folder'.
Tap Back up device folders and select the folders (to enable) you want to back up.

Folders can include:

Photos you've downloaded.
Screenshots you've taken.
Photos saved by other apps (Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, Instagram, etc).

If you're unable to find this setting/option in Google Photos, then give the below steps a try to help resolve the issue:

Check your internet connection (mobile data).
Close the Google Photos app and re-launch it.
Sign out and sign back in to Google Photos with the same Google Account.
Clear App data:

Open your device's Settings app (not the Google Settings app).
Touch Apps.
Select Google Photos in the list.
Touch Clear data.

Update the Google Photos app on your Android phone:

Visit the Google Play Store.
Open Google Photos.
Touch on Update.

Part of the reason is that Google Photos on your phone is not only retrieving images from the Google Photos cloud, but the app is also acting like a Gallery App (it is showing the images on your local device, in this case the phone).

Look for the "Backup complete" message in the Google Photos app on your phone. Check here to see what has been uploaded to Google Photos: https://photos.google.com/u/0/

If you don't see images in your iPad which you see in the website above:

If your photos were successfully uploaded to your online Google Photos account they may be available there. Try visiting photos.google.com and searching for them. If you have more than on

Once you delete photos from your Google Photos account, they're moved to Trash for the next 60 days. If you deleted them by mistake you can always restore them from the Trash folder within those 60 days. Here's the link explaining how to recover them from Trash. If you have more than one Google account, check the trash for all of them.

If you accessed the Trash and manually sent the photos for permanent deletion, or if the 60 days expired, there is no way to recover them from Google Photos.

3. Review other options

if you previously used Picasa, visit picasaweb.google.com and search for your photos.
have you made any backups of the photos on your phone, camera, computer, or elsewhere?
there is a small chance that you can restore the photos using a recover deleted photos app (Android). I haven't used them myself so have no specific recommendations. There may well be more app options if you visit the appropriate app store and try other search terms. I don't see any similar apps on the iOS store, but you could check yourself.
you can contact the Google Drive support team to see if any deleted files may be recovered. Use the Google Drive contact form, click Missing or deleted files, select a contact option, and be sure to tell them you permanently deleted files in Google Drive.
If you ever shared the photos with anyone else, it's possible they may have a copy they could share back or send to you.

Photos exist in the library, one copy. Adding to an album puts a link to the master in the album. Deleting the link deletes the original. You should have 'Removed' the photos from the album instead of deleting them. They should be in the trash unless you have emptied the trash in which case the permanent warning means permanent.

The issue is not entirely due to the one copy feature. I understand that a picture can be added to multiple albums. This is good if you want to create a "subset" album from the original one. Deleting the picture from one album results in deletion from all albums.

The issue here is that I created a new album and dragged dropped the photos into it from my desktop. I left the new album untouched and simply deleted all pics from original albums (since I am re-uploading).

What I didn't realize that even with a re-upload, google treated it as another version of the same photo and still kept one copy. This is counter-intuitive.

It also means that if I had originally deleted everything first and then done the re-upload, it would have been fine. This too is counter-intuitive.

Just for clarity and not a comment on whether it is the best way, all web uploads create a master copy in the Google Photos library before then adding a link to it in the album. The drag and drop is not literal.

Re-upload is also in as much as when the upload is initiated Google Photos sees it already has a master copy and skips to the next photo. For example uploading ten photos may take 10 minutes, re-uploading the same ten would take 10 seconds because they are not physically re-uploaded.

Lately I noticed my data was consumed too fast. So, after the second top up that was consumed incredibly fast, I investigated it and realised it was google photos...and also recall that "now your photos will not sync to drive but to photos".

It was definitely not clear that this would have produced a sudden re-sync of all my pictures and videos and use up all my data.

Not a good idea from the company too to duplicate all this data instead of using the already synced data available.

Am I missing something or do you agree I should be entitled for a refund in this case?

Mattia,

The change Google made that stopped your pictures syncing to to Google Drive did not cause or require anything new or different. There was no re-sync needed, and no data was duplicated. This was just an internal change that stopped making your Google Photos files also available in Google Drive.

It sounds to me like you may need to check the settings of your Google Photos app and disable syncing over cellular networks. This way, your pictures will only get uploaded when there is a strong WiFi signal and your phone plan data will not be used for this. Disabling the cellular option is always recommended for users with limited data plans.

what you suggest is obviously what I have done after I have noticed that 8 GB of data was suddenly synchronised to Google Photos.

But how do I produce 8 GB of photos and videos a day without even taking a picture?

I am a big fan of big G, but this is a flaw in its communication for updates and makes me loose trust in the business I have to say.

This should have been posted somewhere, like the notification about the change was.

There isn't a way to delete your Google Account. You can either stop using it or uninstall the app that you've logged in with that Google Account.

Uninstalling and reinstalling the Google Photos app or signing out off the app will not delete the photos/videos that are already backed up to Google Photos (cloud). They are synced to your Google Account.

I did that. But the downloaded video is not the one I edited but the one that was automatically created by the photos assistant. I need to download my version and it doesn't get downloaded even after I tap the Save button.

I understand and I know how important Google Photos is for you. Please give the below steps a try in a sequence to help resolve the issue:

Check your internet connection (mobile data).
Close the Google Photos app and re-launch it.
Sign out and sign back in to Google Photos with the same Google Account.
Clear App data:

Open your device's Settings app (not the Google Settings app).
Touch Apps.
Select Google Photos in the list.
Touch Clear data.

Update the Google Photos app on your Android phone:

Visit the Google Play Store.
Open Google Photos.
Touch on Update.

Followed the exact steps on my Nexus 5x.

Except that I already hade the latest Photos App.

Didn't help. The downloaded (save to device) movie is still the wrong one.

Had tried all that before posting about it here. Did that all again. Doesn't work still. And now there's a new problem. I don't see the save to device option soon after editing the clip. It takes a while for that option to get included in the options.

This is the edited video made from 2 different clips. I couldn't see the save to device option.

You have queried this in the Google Photos forum.

However, the Google Photos app doesn't recognise any flash drive connected through the USB port on the phone.

Still, there are multiple ways to do so.

If your phone can recognise a flash drive, then you can use some file explorer app to move the content from your phone memory to the USB stick.

Alternatively, you can connect your phone to a desktop PC & the USB drive to another port on the same PC. Then you can cut and paste the files using Windows Explorer without even downloading those to the PC.
