  • It's know that the Google Photos folder in Drive is often incomplete. This is partly by design (photos uploaded from computer by using Backyp & Sync are not added), but also because photos are added late or the syncing seems stuck. 

  • When creating an archive (Google Takeout) is stuck on preparing you may try with smaller batches. 

  • You find more info about downloading in this article.

All I can think is that you looked at a photobook and one was saved in draft. If that is the case, the draft album will be deleted after a period of time, but no photos will be deleted.

I am trying to download my photos (~750G worth) using Google Takeout, as I understand this is the only method available given the elimination of sync with Drive. Every attempt has resulted in "data archive failed" messages from Google.

  • I tried a Takeout request using 2GB file sizes - I got a bunch of links along with a message that the archive failed message because Google couldn't get all the files
  • Assuming that some were larger than 4GB, I change to 10GB archive sizes and that failed as well
  • I changed the archive delivery method to have the files delivered to Google Drive, and after waiting nine days Google sent an email "data archive failed" with no reason, explanation, or hints.

Now all of my photos are locked into Google Photos and I can't get copies of them (exactly as people feared and as Google said wouldn't happen.) I've tried downloading subsets of photos with the same problem. 

Any hints on ways forward are appreciated!

There are other methods for downloading from Google Photos, but none is really suited to download large amounts. Downloading does not seem to be high on Google's priority list. You find some info about downloading here.

Do you get the same problems when you try to download albums?  Downloading of selected photos is limited to 500, but that limitation does not seem to exist for albums. I tested till 1000 (I have no bigger ones) and that worked.

But I assume that you all have synced-down until July 10 in year and month folders and that will stay. 
So you only need to download what is new from https://photos.google.com weekly: then that zip only contains picturefiles which can be added to the actual month folder etc. 

If that contents come from your smartphone mainly, you also can install Dropbox to sync-down new pictures to pc and move that files into your main backup structure to prevent cumulation in the DP-cloud.

Thanks for the excellent feedback and info link. I have tried downloading albums - I get a set of links along with the "data archive failed" message, and I haven't been able to figure out what failed and what didn't. Some of the supposed failed images are there and download just fine if I try a single image. Without indication on what's missing it is quite difficult to know if you actually have the full archive, much less try to download 'bad' files individually.

I also tried building albums by, for example, searching any image from 2001 (search using "2001" as the search string, selecting all, and then downloading the 2001 album. I ran this takeout twice and got two slightly different sets of files - so again, how do I know I got them all? It seems quite buggy.

My next approach will be to use the Photos API to download metadata on all images in my collection, and then try to get them individually. Painful and slow, but at least I'll get to know what failed (though I still can't trust that I'll get all the images when I ask for the metadata....).  If you foresee problems with this approach I appreciate comments.

Sorry, I (we) can't be of any further help about Take-out because my tests always were restricted to small amounts to get an idea about the complex content of the downloaded zip. 

But you also can download that 2001 test-album straight from https://photos.google.com/albums and then you should get a decent zip with normal picturefiles containing all metadata provided by the camera. 

I have no experience with using the Photos API for programmers. But it depends on what metadata your are talking about: intrinsic data added by your camera or added items by you? 

We work the other way around: we start on desktop with selecting and editing. So we already have everything neatly on disc before uploading to Google. That is only correct way of course - all other approaches will cause a hell of timeconsuming troubles afterwards.

The Google Photos app acts as a portal to view the Device copy and the Google Photos 'backed up' copy. It does not store any photos. This means that any account you select will see all the device photos but it does not back them up, only the account specified in Backup & sync settings will back up any photos. You can see the actual backed up photos at Photos - Google Photos - Tap here when signed in with your account.

If the profile photo is one you took and added to their contact, you can search for it in Google Photos, then select the image, use the : menu and select Save to device.

If the contact photo is not one you took, but is one, for example, from the person's Google Profile image and it automatically shows in the contact photo field, there is not a way to directly save the image to the device.

Instead, open Google Contacts, select the person, select the profile images in the circle to open it up full screen, and then take a screen shot to save to device. Typically on Android, you simultaneously hold down the power button and the volume down key to take a screen shot. On some devices, like the Google Pixel, you can hold down the power button and then select screen shot. 

Or if you have Google Assistant on your Android device, simply open the profile image to full size, and say, "OK Google, take a screen shot

With the new changes to syncing, how do I sync deletions to my Google Photos? I use Lightroom to process all of my SLR photos and then, previously, would sync those photos to Google Photos via a folder on my PC afterwards for organizing and sharing with friends and family. However, I frequently will take over 100 pictures, have them sync to Photos, and then after they are synced, go back and delete half of the photos in Lightroom (removing them from the syncing folder on my PC). Previously, this deletion was then synced to Photos, removing all the unwanted images. Now with the new sync changes, I can't figure out how to delete the hundreds of unwanted/undesired photos from my Google Photos library that previously synced but have since been removed from my Lightroom syncing folder. Obviously, manually identifying and deleting every unwanted photos would be prohibitively time intensive and is not a viable option.
If this kind of syncing isn't an option after the new sync changes, I'm wondering if I should switch to OneDrive instead in order to keep things organized, as it sounds like this is an option there and would sync up easily with my PC. 
Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

Yes, I would like to know how to do this also. How is something called "Sync" if it doesn't actually do anything to keep the directories ACTUALLY IN SYNC???

It should be very simple, if I delete something from my computer, then delete it from Google Photos. If I delete something from Google Photos, then delete it from my computer.  OR, perhaps just one-way SYNC, where any deletes from computer will delete from Google Photos, but no deletes from Google photos delete on my computer.

Mine is called "Backup and Sync from Google" but it doesn't actually keep things in Sync. 

I think we are both splitting hairs and it looks like this functionality of syncing a persons Google Photos library with anything other than a Google Photos app install is not in the cards right now. I guess I just need to figure out how to install a Google Photos app on my Windows PC in order to get the functionality I need from this product.

The misleading thing is that later local edits may sync to Drive, but not to Photos anymore - that just seems a fixed copy counting for storage or not. 
So only deletions may sync depending on preferences set in the app.

Yeah, unfortunately it seems the only real way to keep things in sync between my computer and Google Photos is to just periodically completely delete everything in Google Photos and reload my entire library up there (just a backup as opposed to more advanced sync) again.

So in summary, with respect to Google Photos, it is really only a backup (onetime sync), not a sync function (two way or continuous sync), despite the name. Importantly, this means that if I make edits on the computer (cropping, color correction, etc) they will either be synced to Photos as an entirely new photo, or not synced as all. Deletions won't be mirrored in either direction. 
Looks like I need to look into other options for easy management of my photos unless this gets changed back. While I loved being able to combine all my photos from my phone and SLR for easy sharing with friends and family (along with the awesome search capabilities), the lack of continuous sync is a deal-breaker for me. I don't really care about deletions or edits from Google Photos being mirrored back to the computer, but the lack of computer deletions and edits on the PC being mirrored to Google Photos after the initial photo upload negates the usefulness it previously provided. In fact, of the two, the lack of mirrored edits is almost an even bigger issue for my workflow than the lack of deletions, although both are pretty problematic.
In terms of other options, I'm familiar with OneDrive's Photo functionality - are there other services to which I should also consider switching?

Yeah, this is what is killing me too. I curate all my photos on my computer, and when I have time to tag more names or correct dates, Google kindly uploads them for me as new versions BUT (ugh) doesn't delete the old version. So I have many many duplicates out there (taking up a lot of Google storage unnecessarily). Also, if I happen to finally downsize some photos while curating, that deletion doesn't get removed from Google.  This is why sync exists, not whatever they call sync (but isn't).

Sorry Doug, but the poor syncing behavior is not changed - that only has been good in the abandoned Picasa-software, but not in any version of Google Photos Backup starting in 2014 within Google+ 

So you really need a total migration and if you are on modern Windows - OneDrive is the most advanced option. There also is a OneDrive-app to sync full quality from phone to pc and editing on pc will sync back to the cloud. Also sharing and sorting is much more comfortable. 
Goodbye Google I would say - they never have been good after Picasa anymore.

I've been struggling with this too since they announced the changes. I think their purpose is to force people to do all photo management inside Google Photos and have that as the only library. But it won't really do it for me, as I also want to use Lightroom for edits and final organizing.

For normal camera pictures you can go on as ususal and upload to Google Photos when ready with editing. 
For phonepictures you can use the Dropbox-app to sync down originals to computer for further editing and then upload to Photos. The backup to Google on phone can be switched-off then and Backup and sync on computer also is not needed anymore.

But when I downloaded "Backup & Sync" it changed the dates of my older photos to the day (last Tuesday, March 17th) I tried to sync my device, and removed them from my photo albums. So it is totally unclear to me what you have done. 

The installed Backup & Sync app can do two totally different things: 
  1. Sync contents in selected folders on Google Drive with the pc - but I assume that you have no contents on Google Drive. 

  2. Sync contents in selected folders on pc with Google Drive together with uploading (not syncing) images to Google Photos - but a fresh pc has no images unless synced via iCloud from iPhone. 
I only know that images from social media like Whatsapp have no dates, so they always get the date of the very last action, like on March 17. 
That can't be avoided and is due to the inferior design of such media. 

Please come back to explain more precisely.

Sorry for the delay - most people never reply and I was not notified due to wrong Google management. 

I can't check myself because I am on Windows. I only know from my iPad that original pictures downloaded via iCloud on my pc, still contain the right exif-info which include correct date & time and then they are correctly placed on the Google Photos website photos.google.com viewed in the Safari-browser on your laptop. 
It always are the pictures from chat-apps which cause problems because their exif got stripped and thereby Google Photos can do no more then attach the current date to them. But you can change this wrong dates on the site by opening the infopanel like shown below: 



Also the timezone can be wrong. 
Use the original date & time of the message for correcting - else you must guess a date. 

Be aware that problem is not caused by Google.

Can you please provide some more details? Are you not able to see the SD card through Google Photos? Or does the app say "Unable to write" when you select to download some photos on the SD card.
