After years of not organizing my photos, I want to do so. At first I did not understand the difference between folders and albums so I used "Move to folder" and created a few folders.

So now I have thousands of photos that I moved archive, a few folders, and a few albums.

Now that I think I understand the difference between folders and albums, I don't want to use separate folders, I just want to use albums to organize my photos.

I can't figure out how to keep the photos that are now in folders in Google Photos, but DELETE THE FOLDER STRUCTURE. I don't want to lose any photos, but I don't want Google Photos to show any folders.

Open the app and go to the Library tab
tap the device folder
long press and stroke down to select all photos
3 dot Move to folder
select Camera (which will only appear if you have a current photo in there)
the folder will disappear when empty.

Please note that Social media images will be shown as 'Today' in the app because they do not contain Date taken information. The only way to move their position is to bulk change the dates at https://photos.google.com/

Take it slow and ask if anything is not clear.

I have been applying this new knowledge and my Photos pages are shaping up nicely. Only about 10,000,000 more uncategorized photos to go.

To clarify what I have learned:

1. A photo cannot be in more than one device. For me, this means that it is in either Camera or Download.

2. A photo cannot show up in both a device and in Archive. That is the whole point of Archive. But if you are looking at a photo in Archive and you want it to show up in the device again, an "unarchive" option is available. That option is not available, however, if you are looking at the photo in an album, only if you are looking at it in Archive.

3. Whether a photo is in a device or in Archive, it can also be added to any number of albums. It can also be removed from one or all of those albums, which has no effect on whether it remains on the device or Archive.

Please let me know if I have made any mistakes in my attempt to summarize your explanation.

In essence you understand well, but the terminology is not quite right. The phone is a device and the filing system has physical folders. In your case the Camera folder and the Download folder.

In 2 Archive hides the photo from the main Photos tab, but if the photo is on the device you can still see it in the Camera folder.

Hi Peter. Now that I have begun the organizing, I'm confused about something I haven't asked about yet.

The first thing I did, which took a while, was to archive every photo so as to give myself a clean slate in Camera and the Photos tab. As you had noted, that's caused "Camera" to disappear, so I took a dummy picture which I deleted later.

Then I began working my way thru the Archive. I would either delete the photo, or I would put it in one or more albums and unarchive it. In theory, when I'm done, nothing will be left in Archive.

So here is my point of confusion. The albums look great, totalling about 35 photos, and the Photos tab looks about correct, with 25 photos. I can't completely account for the difference, but in at least one or two cases I put the same photo in multiple albums. I may ask for more help on this mystery later.

But the real mystery for me is,

why are there only four photos in Camera? The Photos tab had some downloaded photos, but a lot more than four of them were taken with my camera. I'm sure all of the missing ones are not in Archive. I don't actually think any of them are.

Is it possible for a picture that was taken with my camera, and is not in Archive, and does show up on the Photos tab, to not be in Camera?

I do have a theory. I often edit photos, mostly cropping. Does that maybe remove them from Camera and move then to Downloads? I don't seem to be able to see any of the individual photos in Download, just an empty box with a spinning gear.

So any explanation for why the Camera has so few photos in it?

Hi Lindsay,

I think we had better start from the beginning and go through the terminology

Take a test photo with you phone then open Google Photos

You should see an up arrow on your account icon or if it is already uploaded you will see Backup complete if you tap on the icon.

If you now open the photo and Move to archive the following happens.

The photo disappears from the Photos view

it isn't physically moved anywhere, all that happens is that a flag is put on the photo which tells the system to 'hide this photo from the Photos view'

Tap the Library tab

The photo should still be visible in the Camera folder

Open the photo and tap the 3 dot menu then Delete from device

This will delete the photo from the Camera folder but a copy remains backed up at https://photos.google.com/

Open the Archive, select and Unarchive the photo

Deleting in Archive will delete the original photo

It will now be back in the Photos view because that view looks at both the Device and the Web copy

The above steps illustrate that there doesn't have to be a Camera copy on the Device because the app also sees the web copy at https://photos.google.com/

Regarding Albums, when you add a photo to an album, a flag is put on the photo which tells the system that it should also belongs in Album A or Album B and this should explain why you might only have 25 photos but can see 35 in albums. An album is effectively a collection of shortcuts which point to the master photo.

Editing does not move anything, it overlays the original photo with the edited version that you see.

It looks like our time zones are not aligned, I am in GMT and unless you are a night owl it looks like you are somewhere else in the world.

That was a very useful exercise, thanks. I didn't realize that Google Photos is a fully integrated collection of both the photos in my phone AND the photos on the web. It is a stunning discovery.

So I can delete all the photos from my device (Camera) and lose nothing, yes? I guess I first have to be sure that the photo had been backed up. I could look at the account icon to be sure that all backing up is complete. Can I tell if a specific photo is definitely on the cloud?

Anyway, then I could use the app just to organize the photos that are on the cloud.

Those photos will always be in either Photos or Archive unless I delete them.

Any photo that is in either Photos or Archive can be, but does not have to be, in one of more albums.

Do I have all that correct? I think it explains to me everything that I'm seeing.

As an aside, do you think that 100% of the users of this app, other than myself, understand all these concepts?

You have all that correct, and definitely not all the users understand all these concepts.

The only way to tell if a specific photo is backed up is to either look on the cloud or when you open a photo in the app and tap the 3 dot menu.

Photos backed up will have the option to 'Delete from device'
Photos not backed up will have the option to Backup now'

Delete options on Android are as follows

Free up space checks that a photo is backed up then deletes it from the local storage
Delete in the Google Photos app using the trash
- Deletes both the device copy and the backed up web copy
- If internet access is available the photo is put in the web trash and is permanently deleted after 60 days
- If Internet access is not available the photo is put in the app trash and is permanently deleted after 60 days or when the app data is deleted
Delete in the app using the 3 dot option to Delete from the device, either singly or by selecting a batch
- The photos remain backed up to the web
Delete using a Gallery app (Gallery Go etc)
- The photos remain backed up to the web

Google Photos (not the app but the site photos.google.com) tries to block duplicates, so I do think that you have a impression: the app just shows what you have on phone - that's are no copies but the same files as shown in your Gallery.

But if the app is logged-in and backupping to the same account and you delete a bad picture in your Gallery, it still will be showed in the Google app, because then you will see its copy at Google. But if you remove a bad picture in the Google app, it will be removed from your Gallery as well as from Google.

Please come back if you have other experiences, but then you must be very precise about your doings, because "duplicates" always are caused by wrong user actions.

You should not even use Take-out without knowing about the rubbish you will get. And that is not told by Google.

Just look around on https://get.google.com/albumarchive: everything under the Autobackup-cover will be downloaded as an endless amount of dayfolders, many containing just a few pictures only - but in Take-out each picture will get an additional metadata-textfile (JSON).

And if also have normal albums created yourself: the same pictures will download, but then in large folders also filled with these additional json-files.

So you better can cancel the process if that still is possible.

Sure. But we are just users trying to help (Photos has no Help service) and can only tell you what is possible. It looks like the Photos team just changed the name from Picasaweb to Google Photos in Takeout. In Picasaweb ALL photos were in albums you created. Like Rinus said now all photos are in tiny day albums AND duplicates in your own albums. The result is a big mess indeed.
