I read that live video preview rolled out with 4.20. I'm on 4.21 and still cannot make it work. It sounds like I should see videos autoplay as I scroll through my photos. It doesn't work on my Pixel phone (9) nor on the Photos app on my Chromebook. I normally use the web version of Photos on Chromebook so that I can upload images and a couple times I have gotten one video (that I had previously opened) to preview when I pass the pointer over it. No others would run and even that video wouldn't run after I reloaded the page.

On Android this only autoplays one video at a time, it's normally the top video as your scrolling down. To be perfectly honest you're not missing a lot. It's useful on the web but not so useful on mobile.
 
Are you using the latest version of the app? It may still be rolling out if you're still not seeing it.

Thanks. Yes, I'm using latest version of app on both devices (4.21 and it supposedly rolled out on 4.20). I agree, it's probably not that useful. The web version was weird, tho. I could get a couple videos to work, but only one at a time. By that, I mean, one would play when I moused over it but none of the others. And then i got a different one to work but none of the others. I'm curious, are there update versions to Google Photos on the web (photos.google,com) or is it just automatically using the latest features? I see no way to check for version.

The web version will always be up to date, that's the best thing about the web. You can even download what's known as the PWA version of Google Photos which is a downloadable version of the website, in theory there's parts that'll be able to work offline.

I used a browser to sign into Photos and it shows my old photos upto the point I switched phones. The photos taken after that point are there in the Photos app while those before that point are visible in the Photos browser site. Is there a way to link both of them? The Google Photos app acts as a portal viewer & shows the content from the cloud & the current device at the same time.
 
Since you are not able to see the content on the cloud, there can be multiple reasons for that to happen such as.
  • The app is busy backing up content on the current phone.
  • The internet connectivity is not adequate.
  • There isn't sufficient space in the memory of the phone.
  • The Google Photos app has not been permitted to use internet data in the background.
Can you please look into those?
Further, can you please try clearing the cached & stored data of the app & see whether that works?

I opened up my file folder on my phone and I saw the last picture but then the entire day disappeared! I then dug through Google photos and my devices storage but they are nowhere to be found. This is now the second time this has happened to me after hiking out of service. Any idea where these photos could be stored or what could be causing this issue?

Thanks for the reply! My issue isn't with how to edit photos, it's with the actual web app just being so very slow. I've been editing photos in google photos for over 5 years but have never had these laggy issues before. It seems like it's just draining my CPU and not able to function properly. I read somewhere else that it could be an extension, but I've tried turning all of my extensions off, but the app is still very slow and I'm still seeing the photos being edited flashing. :/

Strange story. 
What browser are you using for viewing photos.google.com???
Because Firefox is famous for causing mysterious troubles which sometimes are popping-up here. 
No problems here in Chrome or Edge on Windows-10. 
 
Please come back with a bit more technical information.
 
PS: you may have problems with outdated Flash-support still not switched-off in your old browser.

Head over to https://one.google.com/storage/management and check if the storage is in any of the trash places, or large files in Gmail, Drive & Photos, or just below in Unsupported videos. This should give a clue on where the storage is being used.
 
Up until the 31st May you can Recover storage at  https://photos.google.com/settings to reduce the storage used by Google Photos to zero.
 
From June 1st new HQ uploads will use storage at a reduced size, HQ upload before June 1st remain free

Google has just announced a locked folder feature for Google Photos but it's not available yet. From the feature's description it looks like the locked photos are kept only on one device, it's not like saving files on a Chromebook.
 
So, if the app you used works similarly, I highly recommend that you back up the locked photos before formatting the device because they're likely the only copies.

When I say saving files to a Chromebook I mean saving them to the local device, not to your Google Drive folder--meaning those files will be blown away if you power wash the device.

I don'thave the feature yet but, based on the information I've seen, it seems the locked folder is local to a specific device and the locked media aren't synchronized to the cloud and accessible elsewhere.

So, for extra safety, it's better to keep copies of any important locked photos somewhere else.

Deleted Photos are stored in Trash for up to 60 days, if you delete Photos again from trash, that's two times deletion.

Here is my issue and I hope someone can help me. I used the Free Up Space option on Google Photos app on my Android phone and afterwards I might have lost a very important video. HELP!

I used the Free Up Space option the other day to get some more storage space freed up on my phone. Now before I did this I made sure that my recent photos had been backed up and on my computer/Google Drive. Once they were I went through and proceeded one by one to delete a few photos but then saw that the free up space option......

There are two videos that are in line with this issue. The first being a 2 1/2min video and the other (and important/lost one) was 10min 24sec. I should mention that both videos played perfectly before the Free up space option was chosen. Also for some odd reason this particular 10min 24 second video had a hard time being uploaded to backup with the backup and sync option. I had other videos that were a bit less or more than this amount and those uploaded without issue during backups. 

Thinking that everything was backed up I chose that selection. The pop up window showed and gave the blip about X amount of space will be freed up by deleting old photos and videos that are already backed up. No issue right......wrong. After the space was freed up I noticed 2 things. The first that the 2 1/2 min video was still there and I could still play it perfectly even thought the cloud with the dash icon was in the bottom right corner (I ended up uploading this video to google drive later). However the 10min 24 second video now looked like the screenshot below......Just a blank grey thumbnail. The time and play button still showed so I opened up the file and hoped it would play. 

To my dismay all I found was a black screen no playback option or anything almost as if the video had turned into an image. I tapped the 3 dots in the right corner and saw that the video loop box was checked, but when I went to look up info it gave me nothing. I tried to get info a few more times before I got the next screenshot saying my video was still processing and to try again later.

What I did was go into my apps and just delete the Google Photos Catche NOT the Data. I thought about logging out of my account and logging back in but I decided against that.

Please if you know of a way to get this "missing/lost' video restored and back on my photos app that would be very appreciated.

Deleting photos from Google Photos is incompatible with the way Backup & sync works. 
 
If you want to do that you need to turn off Backup and use it manually going forward, then go to photos.google.com to delete from Google Photos.
 
Deleting using the app will always delete the phone copy,

This would be handy for way for than 3 people. In the meantime I'll also take the previous suggestion, but I don't think this is an either or situation. Even when using folders, an ability to add a description to multiple pics would be a valuable editing tool.

I would certainly be a 4th person.  I find it annoying and rather short sighted that I can add time/place and location to multiple pics at once, but I can't add a description to multiple pics at once.  And I dont' want them in a stupid album for no reason...especially when I might want to tag a few of the pictures with something a bit different than the rest.

You should ask this via the feedback option on photos.google.com or in the Photos-app because Google certainly does not monitor this daily hell. 
But you should be aware that even for very popular complaints, Google is extremely slow with responding for reasons totally unclear and never explained to the daily volonteers on this forum. 
 
However: Google Photos has no provison to add standarised keyword tags like either, so I have the impression that you would like to use the description-field for these type of tagging. And that is not the primary purpose of descriptions which should be specific for the individual pictures. 
But you can combine both functions, for example "Eiffeltower [france, paris, park, town, tower].
The only solution now is by copy & paste such text to the next picture.

Probably you have stored some unsupported videos recently which Google can't compress to high quality. 
See one.google.com/storage/management and log-in with the account used. 
If it are unsupported videos indeed, deleting them will reset your counter to zero again (hopefully).

Everything looks normal in the overview, but the color scheme changes every time I tap on a photo (videos are unaffected). The images are more golden and less bright, looks a little like the alpaca filter.

Looks as if they're testing out a auto-enhance display AI feature without informing users and giving them the option to disable it in the settings, it's very annoying firstly because right now it makes every picture look like garbage an secondly because, even if it actually improved the viewing experience, when I look at a picture I want to know how it actually looks...
