Nevertheless, when you tap the delete icon in the Google Photos app, a warning appears telling you what will happen if you proceed. On your phone, that message asks, "Remove from Google account & synced devices?"
 
When you attempt to manually empty the trash/bin in Google Photos, another warning appears that explains the consequences of permanently deleting those pictures and videos. 
If you choose to proceed anyway, there is nothing that any of the volunteers in this forum can do to help you recover your pictures.
 
However, you may install to your Android device a deleted photo recovery app (be sure to not pick one that requires rooting) https://play.google.com/store/search?q=recover%20deleted%20photos&c=apps;
and run a scan for anything to recover.

Once you delete something from the trash, there is no way to recover that through Google Photos.

In this case, the automatic system shows you the process of uploading and synchronizing files, and not the final result.  
This means that at the end of the process, you will see the actual state of your Storage.  Photos don't accept the same files / photos for backups, doesn't make duplicates.  
Therefore, when the algorithms scan all the files, then there will be nothing superfluous.

You can disable the automatic backup of any folder on your Android device. Open the Google Photos app and tap on the hamburger icon at the top left corner to open the sidebar menu. From there, tap Device Folders to see all of the folders on your phone that contain pictures or videos. 

Find your Screenshot folder in the list and tap on it to view the images. At the top of the screen, above the picture thumbnails, you'll see a gray bar that says "Backup & sync" with a toggle switch on the right. Tap that toggle switch to turn it off. From that point on, none of your screenshots will be automatically uploaded to Google Photos.

Nothing happens on June 1st all photos already uploaded in High Quality remain free forever
  • Photos will not be deleted
Free unlimited applies to High Quality uploads until June 2021 for everyone, no need to pay.
 
Storage can be reduced to 0bytes anytime up to 31st May by going to Settings - Google Photos - Tap here
and using the Recover storage option.
 
Photos uploaded in High Quality after June 1st count against the free 15GB allowance at reduced MB

That dashboard never have been accurate because the total incluyde the number of pictures in your own albums and these number should not be counted because it are no copyfiles. 
But I do see that they have changed their report: I my case it says that I have 30K+ photos (that's correct, but I would like to see a more accurate number like ca. 45K), but I don't have 500 albums because I only have about 70). 
Please add your voice via feedback in the app (under your profile) and send them back to school :-)

PS: on Android there is a special tric to know the amount exactly, but that tric does not work on iPhone.
