For Google Photos, see this about recovering photos & videos. Note that photos/videos permanently deleted from Google Photos Trash are not recoverable. To get the pics stored in Google Photos on your SD card please visit the site takout.google.com and arrange for download.

Once the data is ready, you will get an email. Access those & then save the attachments on the SD card.

Nevertheless, you will need a suitable app to unzip the attachments.

Tap the desired folder under Photos on device
Select photos by long pressing then tap others after the tick confirms the first selection
- You can also long press and stroke down to select a batch
Tap the 3 dot menu top right
Tap Move to folder

Note that if the photos are backed up to Google Photos this will not remove them from the Photos view and even if the new folder is not selected for Backup & sync any contents will still be deleted if deleted using the Google Photos app.

Google has no tool to discern between originals (counting for storage) and high quality uploads (not counting for storage).

But because videos take most, you can select these via the searchbox on photos.google.com in the browser on your computer. And then you can view the individuals and when you open their infopanel, you can see their size in MB or GB like shown below:

And then you can download the ones that are over 1 GB via the 3 dots to your computer before deleting them from Google via the trashbin (then they go in trash for 60 days).

But it is more comfortable to start paying for 200 GB on some bad day after June 1 when you are approaching your 115 GB limit :-)

PS: the 3+ minute HD-movie shown in the screenshot should have used about 700 MB of storage at Google, but it is 48 MB only. So this clearly is an example of a file compressed to high quality and up to June 1 these HQ-files are not counted. But after June 1 new HQ-files will get counted also.

To have an auto backup, please turn on the Backup & Sync.

Please follow these steps to initiate that.

Tap your profile icon.

Tap Photos settings.

Tap Backup & sync.

On the next screen, tap the slider in front of Backup & sync.

Next tap "Mobile data usage". This is to ensure that even if you are not connected to WIFI, the backup will never interrupt.

Select "Unlimited" for daily limit backup. However, choose the appropriate one if you do not have a limitless data plan.

Tap "Backup while roaming" if you are moving out of your home circle frequently.

Again on the previous page, tap "Backup device folders

Select all the desired ones from the complete list. Note, you will not find the camera folder here as that gets included by default.

Once done, your pics will be backed up without your intervention.

However, one caution. Never delete any photo from your phone. The sync option will delete that from the cloud also.

Whenever you are running out of space on your phone, use the option "Free up space" in Google photos & not anything else.

Incase if you're referring how to back up your photos as well as music on to your Google Photos, Unfortunately, you can't backup music. You can only backup your photos and videos by following the steps from this help center article on how to "Back up photos & videos".

Question: Lost private videos and photos

Just trying to recover some private videos and photos that I deleted from Google photos

If you want to get a deleted item back, check your trash to see if you can get it back. If your photo or video has already been backed up and you deleted it, it will remain in your Trash for 60 days.

On your computer, go to the trash.
Place your cursor over the photo or video you want to restore, then click Done .
At the top right, click Restore . That photo or video will be restored to your Google Photos library and added back into any albums it was in.

Don't see the photo or video? If a deleted photo or video isn't in trash, you can’t restore it. You won't be able to restore a photo if:

You moved it to trash more than 60 days ago.
You moved it to trash, then emptied your trash.
You permanently deleted it from your trash.
You permanently deleted it from your device’s Gallery app, without backing it up first.
