Hi, My Note 8 recently ran out of space. I went into Google Photos and used the "free up space" feature. I now have around 10gb of space on my phone, but all of my videos have gone from the device, and are not in Google Photos. 3 years of videos of my sons first words, steps etc have vanished. Help!!! :(

Answer:

Hi Paul,

Welcome to the Google Photos Help Community.

Just to let you know that Free Up Space option on the Google Photos app will actually remove/delete all the data file (Photos and videos) from your phone that have already been backed up completely to the Google Photos. As you've mentioned that it has deleted from the Google Photos also, could you please check if you're able to see the photos and videos on web (photos.google.com)? If not, please check for the following things:

1. Can you see them via Picasa?
2. Are they in the trash?
3. Ensure you are logged in to the correct Google account.

Keep me posted.

Best,
Sonya

Answer:

Hi Soraya,
Apologies for the delay, I've checked all 3 areas you've listed with no luck :(
Any other suggestions?

thanks

Paul

Answer:

It's already two months since this issue was raised but then there is no action taken. I have the same situation as what Paul mentioned and I don't know how to recover them all. Please help us.

I tried the steps that were mentioned above but it failed. :(

Question: Upload library of images for sharing to another person, then deleting my access

Trying to upload hard drives of photos for family friend. Want to share the uploaded files with them…

Hi Brendan,

It would be easier (less things to mess up) if you just did it on their machine (many a laptop) using their account - have them change their password afterwards if there is a concern.

Otherwise, this works (but can get messed up if somebody does not know what they are doing).

Upload all the photos to your account (or even better an account created for this purpose, assuming a fairly large number of images).  Then use either Shared Albums or a Shared Library to make the images available to the Friend's account - Then,  VERY IMPORTANT, make use they "Add to library" all of the images.  After this, and IF you are positive the images are all truly visibly in "Photos" of the Friend's account, you can delete them in your account.

There are benefits and drawbacks for each approach (Shared Albums or a Shared Library) depending on the number of images involved and whether the Friend is very detail oriented.

Note: I said Upload not Backup and Sync the images.  I am not a user of Backup and Sync (except on mobile devices).

Good luck,  Dougsap (volunteer)

I have a google PIxel 2 and I run out of space on my drive. (actually it has been removed) now if I take pictures on the phone google will not upload them in photos on the cloud. An icon comes up on the phone saying that it can not be uploaded. What shall I do? I called google Pixel but they can not help me and referred me to this forum.

Answer:

Matt,

The pictures you take with your Pixel 2 should be uploaded to Google Photos in original quality regardless of the amount of space you have available in Drive, unless there's an issue with you having a completely full Drive. I haven't heard of anybody else having that kind of problem, though.

What do you mean "actually it has been removed"? Are you talking about Google Drive? That isn't something that can be removed. Can you clarify please?

Thanks.
~ Greg

Answer:

Hi, I purchased 100 GB via a Google chromebook, for some reason this 100GB has been taken away in Jan 19 and my account has been reversed to the original allowance of 15GB.
I can not save anything on the drive but in theory pictures from the pixel phone should not have this problem but they do.

Question: In google photos bin only deleted items shows it removed after 60 days.can i get my photos now

I want permanently deleted photos

Hi Nagesh Gowda

If you have back up & sync on, photos and videos you delete will stay in your trash for 60 days.
  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Photos app Photos.
  2. At the top left, tap Menu Menu and then Trash Trash.
  3. Touch and hold the photo or video you want to recover.
  4. At the bottom, tap Restore. The photo or video will be back:
    • In your phone
    • Into the "Photos" section of the app.
    • Into any albums it was in.
If you have deleted the photos from the Trash, then I'm sorry but you can't retrieve them. This is why you receive a warning when you delete from the Trash. Deleting from the Trash is permanent

Lastly, you could try an Android Data Recovery app that might be able to restore the files to from your phone. But I can't promise that it will work as they are all 3rd party apps.

Question: Is there a problem with the App today, nothing seems to be working well or at all, in some instance?

I've not been able to edit, delete or do anything with my albums today.

Hi Elizabeth,

Things seem to be working fine for me in Northern California.

You might make sure that you have:
- Closed all recent apps (just for clean-up).. sometimes too many recent apps can cause stability issues.
- Checked for outstanding Updates in the App Store.
- Possibly check for outstanding OS updates in Settings.

Good luck,  Dougsap (volunteer)

Answer:

Hello, Avtar singh 7804

When someone deletes a photo, still that remains in the Bin for sixty days. After that, the program deletes that permanently. There is no chance to recover those.

At least try recovering the ones deleted within the last sixty days. For that, tap the library icon. At the top, you will notice the Bin icon. Tap that, select all the pictures & tap restore.

However, regret, it wouldn't be possible to get anything beyond that.

I am trying to figure out why some pictures are showing on up on my devices main account and some are not. I tried to look for them but then I remembered that I made some alternative email accounts. Does having those accounts mean that some photos I take could end up on those accounts or what else?
Sorry if I am not clear enough. Please respond.

Answer:

Hi Charles,

The photos would upload to the primary account on your device. You can check which account you are logged in to:
  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Photos app Photos
  2. At the top left, click Menu Menu
  3. You should see your address at the top of the menu draw
This is the account where all your photos will be backing up to.

Have you possibly deleted the photos from your phone before the backup had been completed? This might account for why the photos are not there.

And are they all photos you took with your camera app? Or are they photos that have been shared to you (and could possibly be in a separate folder on your device)?

Answer:

I never shared any photos actually, and yea I am pretty sure that I lost the photos in another device. So if I never shared any photos then they wont show up anywhere else?

Answer:

Hi Charles,

If you never shared the photos, then no, they won't show up anywhere else.
The only thing I can think of, is that on your other device, you were logged into a different account. If you possibly have another email address that you use, then possibly they were uploaded to Google Photos with that account.

Answer:

I use like two other accounts and some minor ones, but i check them and no other pictures showed up on the ones I used more often. And these were used more frequently than any other account. So now im pretty sure none of those pictures are on any other account. But then again im not sure, before now I didnt use Google Photos at all. So unless somehow the accounts switched automatically

Hello, shalini kumari 7416

Welcome to Google Photos Community Support Forum & thanks for your query.

I guess you used the remove from results option in face grouping.
Regrettably, there is no quick solution for that.

You can try deselecting the group similar faces option.
Then reselect the option after some time.

One earlier thread suggests waiting for 1-2 weeks before you reinstate the option to get improved results.
You can read that in detail. The link is here.

I have read that google lens is already available in Spanish, I have the latest version of google photos installed and android 8.0, and I still can not activate it, they could help me?

Answer:

Hello Paulino,

Welcome to the Google Photos Help Community.

Just to let you know that Google Lens will work on any device with the latest version of Google Photos. Currently, Google Lens can only be used if your device language is set to English.

However, I'd suggest you try some of these basic troubleshooting steps on your device:

1. Sign out from your Google account and sign in back.
2. Uninstall and reinstall the Google Photos updates. (Go to Settings > Apps or Application Manager > GooglePhotos app > Uninstall Updates > OK). As long as you have a strong Internet connection (Wi-Fi or mobile data), your Play Store app will update to the latest version within a few minutes.
3. Try clearing your app data which is the same as uninstalling and reinstalling the app. After you clear your data, sign in and turn "back up & sync" on again.Open your device's Settings app (not the Google Settings app).
a. Tap Apps.
b. Select Photos in the list.
c. Tap Clear data.
4. Restart your device.

Keep me posted.

Best,
Sonya

Hello, Brian Johnson 9307

Welcome to Google Photos Community Support Forum & thanks for your query.

You can do that conveniently through the share option which becomes visible when we tap a picture & launch in full screen.
The share symbol will be the first icon in the bottom row. Tap on that.

Then the app will show all the possible way to share. That includes persons, frequently used apps & a list of all the apps installed apps that are capable of handling photos.
Tap "More" in the list of apps to expand that. Then that will show all the email clients installed on your phone.
Select the desired one. Enter the email id of the recipient & complete the action.

2. Items deleted manually from photos.google.com/trash can not be recovered.

3. Items deleted from your YouTube Channel can not be recovered.

Answer:

Hello, Candace Chisholm

Welcome to Google Photos Community Support Forum & thanks for your query.

I think you are trying to do something ahead of time.
Up to 31st May 2021, the pics stored in High-quality would not be occupying any space on Google Drive.

You can backup the entire collection on your phone right now (in high-quality format only), without worrying much, as that is going to occupy zero space.

However, after 31st May 2021, every new picture and any edit to the existing ones will consume space on Google Drive. That would be irrespective of the format and quality.

At that time, you can decide upon the Google 1 requirement based on your average clicks in a month & the space that is going to occupy.

I am trying to sync my photos between my mac and my google drive.

I know i have 37,306 photos and 763 videos.

screenshot from photos:

I know i am syncing only from my photos library

backup and sync says it is syncing 193,324 photos....

i have deleted the app, reinstalled, and everything else i can think of.

is it time i just gave up on this or what are my options?

Answer:

Sorry, not sure why..  All the screen shots were doing were verifying my numbers from the source - eg photos, backup and sync and settings on Mac.

Hopefully these are now attached below, if not not sure what to do!

Sync count though it is now at 193486!

Answer:

Thanks, I can see them now. What options do you have in Preferences when you select 'Change' to the right of the Choose option next to Backing up photos and videos. One of the issues with the Apple photo library is that it contains thousands of supplementary files (metadata), face tiles etc. which are scanned in the count, but not necessarily uploaded to Google Photos.

Hello, Leonardo Costa 4621

Welcome to Google Photos Community Support Forum & thanks for your query.

Deleting the photos stored in High-Quality format is not going to provide any reprieve as that is occupying zero space on Google Drive right now.

Google photos should occupy no space for the activities up to 31st May if you have chosen to save the pics in High-Quality format.

Currently, the available space is shared between
  • Gmail
  • Files on Google Drive
  • Pictures in original quality & videos in an incompatible format in Google Photos collection.
To check what is occupying the space, you need visiting this link.
one.google.com/storage/management
There, you will also find some tips on how to retrieve some of the storage space.
Follow those & recover the space.

I have about 24000 photos on a personal gmail account, where face grouping works fine. I shared my library with my gsuite account (I am the admin) and selected auto add to library. These photos are now all in my gsuite library along with all new photos I take. I can search based on date, location or objects, but faces have not appeared. It has been about a month since the photos were added, and I add new photos every day. The face grouping setting is on, an I've toggled it several times, often waiting days before re-enabling it. I've also attempted to toggle it on several platforms, used incognito mode as well and as a VPN, all to no avail.
I contacted the gsuite support team, and they were not able to help. I know that face grouping works fine on other gsuite accounts.

Hi Dalton,

Welcome to the Google Photos Help Forum.

It looks like you'd want to add some faces to the shared library of your Google Photos. I recommend turning on the facial recognition for that particular account through the below steps:
  • On your computer, go to photos.google.com/settings.
  • Next to Group similar faces, click the Down arrow .
  • Turn off Face grouping and turn it back on and wait for a couple of days and share your results.
If nothing helps, try replicating the issue on another device to see if it's the device hardware having issues.

For more information, please check the Help Center Article on turning on face grouping.

Keep me posted.

Best,
Emma

Hi Emma, I've done these steps before, but I did them again just for fun, no change.
This issue occurs across several devices and I have turned face grouping off and on with several devices as well.

Hi Dalton,

Thanks for posting back.

The team is already aware of this issue and they are working on it. I will get back to you once I've an update on this.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Best,
Emma

Not to burst your bubble. But this has been broken for me since September. Google's crumby support team continues to give the same worthless troubleshooting steps and say they are working on it. They don't seem to care. I wish I could actually pay for the service or something to get some decent technical support.

Totally agree, I've had so much trouble with the support team for several issues.
A Reddit user actually helped me fix my problem:

@janvb
I now have a few recent photos auto-face-grouped and the newly identified faces have now appeared in my previously empty People album.   Manual tagging is not available though on either Android or web apps.

So some progress.  I updated the Android app to v4.38 but I doubt if it's due to that though.

Hi Lena Abc

If you have deleted the video from the Trash, then I'm sorry but you can't retrieve it. This is why you receive a warning when you delete from the Trash. Deleting from the Trash is permanent.
