Just look to the infopanel of individual pictures: if you move that picture a bit up with your fingertip, you can see the resolution and the megabytes.

If not above 16 MP, you will not see any difference, but the megabytes of original pictures always will be a larger number.

There is no search option available to get a general overview of all Originals.

But basically your method is wrong: just store everything in original quality, but download to computer everything new every week from https://photos.google.com and then apply the Recover storage button for compressing all to high quality if you are reaching 15 GB at https://www.google.com/settings/storage

The only way to find out how much storage is being used is to use Google Takeout.

If you want confirmation of the Google Photos usage you can follow the steps below.

Go to Google Dashboard and expand the Photos tab then left click on the 3 dots and select Download data. If you wait a minute until 'All photos albums included' pops up then click on it and deselect all.
Then scroll down and select all the year albums Photos from 2020 etc. You will now get a single copy of each photo, one json file per photo, and one filename-edited.jpg for each edited photo.
The contents of all manually created albums will also be in the year folders so there is no need to include them because they do not use storage allocation. An album is a collection of links pointing to the year album copies.
Continue to create the download and wait for completion then you will see a summary of the Takeout which will give you the total size. For a quick estimate choose the 50GB output size, there is no need to download unless you want to create an offline archive for security.

I perceive there is some misunderstanding between Google Photos & Google Drive.

from your PC, you can sync the content including photos with Google Drive. However, that will be static storage.

Alternatively, you can sync the photos folder on your PC with Google Photos. Then the app will provide some enhanced features like people search, memories etc.

Nevertheless, the sync function always replicates your actions from one end to another.

Thus, if you delete something from your PC, the synced content will delete that from cloud storage & vice versa.

In this way, once you set up syncs, you should never delete something unless you want to get rid of that permanently.

Is it so that pictures from a specific date are not visible in the Photos tab?

Have you looked into the Bin whether something is there?

Google Photos is account led, which means that any or all devices you sign in to Google Photos will have their photos backed up to photos.google.com if Backup is enabled.

To delete a photo from the device only, there are a number of options.

Delete the photo from the Apple Photos app
Open the photo full screen and tap the 3 dot menu to choose Delete from device
- You can also select multiple photos from the Photos tab and do the same
Use the command to Free up space

These options will put the photos in the Apple Photos Recently Deleted folder where they will stay for 30 days or until you manually delete them.

There is a way to see an accurate count in Gmail on the Android if only one account is being used on the device. It assumes Backup & sync is activated and up to date.

Go to Gmail
Compose
tap the paperclip-> Attach file
Browse files in Photos and the photos count gives an accurate number.
- Archived items are excluded
