I'm currently locked out of emails because I'm "over quota". Too bad File Management is exclusively a Google One feature and won't let me use that tool to actually go in and delete files counting against the quotas.

TLDR: How can I find only Google Photos counting against quota, download, and then delete only them?

3 part question:

I've uploaded photos for a decade as "high quality". So if I try to download "all" of my photo data... that would be insane. Only 10gb is counting against my storage. So How do I find specifically the "photos counting against the quota"?
After I find ALL of the files counting against quota, how do I download ALL of them as say a zip folder? (I am currently having it make a photo backup zip file up to 100GB to download - but it says it can take days... and will likely fail in download if it takes a week for my home internet...) So I want to download ALL of the files counting against quota but not truly all the data in my account. That make sense?
After I download the files - I want to then delete them off my Google Photos so that my quota goes to 0MB. I will probably still have 25000 photos or videos in my account - as they were uploaded in "high quality" before June 1st 2021. So I dont' want to delete all my photos - just the ones counting against quota.

Were you uploading everything in High-Quality (Or space saver quality) before 1st June 2021?

Then, what's occupying the space would be only those uploaded on or after 1st June 2021.

You can find those by visiting the link https://photos.google.com/search/_tra_ .

However, if you had uploaded something in original quality before 1st June 2021, then it's not possible to locate those. At most, you can convert those in space saver quality & gain some space.

No selective quality download available unless quotamanagement works, where you can select all large files to download.

Alternatively, go to Google Dashboard and expand the Photos tab then left click on the 3 dots and select Download data. If you wait a minute until 'All photos albums included' pops up then click on it and deselect all.

Then scroll down and select all the year albums Photos from 2020 etc, or any Albums you have created

You will now get a single copy of each photo, one json file per photo, and one filename-edited.jpg for each edited photo.

Unfortunately there is no easy way to use the json files without specialist software so they can be safely deleted.

That doesn't seem to be an option on the Legacy Free plan actually. That requires a Google One - which is not compatible with Legacy Free plan. I would have to forever give up my legacy free plan as they removed that feature from the LF plan (it appears)

The idea of going back 10+ years and just deleting thousands of photos with the hopes that I'll find the ones that are counting against my quota seems archaic and wildly insane.

We're talking about 9GB of photos - not that many in the grand scheme. But I have no clue what year or even decade those may have been. Were they the first year I was uploading? Maybe I uploaded a bunch in full quality before turning it on? So Should I delete my oldest photos for a few years... and lose all the geotagging, sharing, etc... in the hopes they are what's counting against the quota?

They have Google One (which allows you to see the photos taking space) but they removed that feature for us Legacy Free plans... Hence my 3 part question.

Please review the following information in case there are any options you haven't yet tried.

1. Check your online account - photos.google.com

If your photos were successfully uploaded to your online Google Photos account they may be available there. Try visiting photos.google.com and searching for them. If you have more than on

2. Check the trash - photos.google.com/trash

Once you delete photos from your Google Photos account, they're moved to Trash for the next 60 days. If you deleted them by mistake you can always restore them from the Trash folder within those 60 days. Here's the link explaining how to recover them from Trash. If you have more than one Google account, check the trash for all of them.

If you accessed the Trash and manually sent the photos for permanent deletion, or if the 60 days expired, there is no way to recover them from Google Photos.

3. Review other options

if you previously used Picasa, visit picasaweb.google.com and search for your photos.
have you made any backups of the photos on your phone, camera, computer, or elsewhere?
there is a small chance that you can restore the photos using a recover deleted photos app (Android). I haven't used them myself so have no specific recommendations. There may well be more app options if you visit the appropriate app store and try other search terms. I don't see any similar apps on the iOS store, but you could check yourself.
you can contact the Google Drive support team to see if any deleted files may be recovered. Use the Google Drive contact form, click Missing or deleted files, select a contact option, and be sure to tell them you permanently deleted files in Google Drive.
If you ever shared the photos with anyone else, it's possible they may have a copy they could share back or send to you.

By "Digital Albums", I mean the ones you can create through Google Photo on my I-Pad, not hard copy. I did not quite understand what the answer is to keep the photos in the order that I put them in to make the album. Could you explain?

Thanks for feedback Kay, but because one can have "albums" everywhere, it is immediately clear when you speak about an album in Google Photos and not about some "digital album".

They are stored in your account, so if you use the same account in the Google-app on iPad and iPhone, both show the same photos and albums - that's no sharing, but just viewing the same cloud. But if they are on a different account (accidently or by purpose) you need to share or switch to the other account temporarily.

When photos are shooted in the order 1-2-3, they always are shown on the photos-page in the order 3-2-1. But when added to an album, their natural order will be 1-2-3 again. But if you want a different order because of "natural beauty", you can drag them in the order 3-1-2 via Edit album. And if that album is viewed in the same app, but on another device, that viewer will see the same order 3-1-2.

So I don't understand why that order got lost when sharing: what are you doing then?

When I share or send an album to someone, somehow the pictures aren't in the order I wanted them..not always, but sometimes. So I either just send it that way or try to go back and fix. But if I do and it re-arranges again, it is frustrating to spend the time doing it over to no avail. Doesn't happen always, but sometimes.

No Google here - just private volonteers only and it is impossible for us to test a fairly large album with a many manipulations in the picture-order. But if you share an album via the Options, you can switch-off the feature that the receivers can add their pictures, because that may cause troubles with the order.

And then you can copy the link provided into a normal mailmessage including some explanation for use and that they only need to be logged-in with their Google-account if they want to add some comments or likes (mostly not relevant either).

I can add no more, but in fact you should avoid a special picture-order unless your pictures have no good chronologic date-order due to inserting pictures downloaded from social media or scanned old prints and slides with dates not related to their real dates (if known).

I want to press this button, before I do that, I want to download them all in their original quality. I don't know what photos I have that are in original quality, they aren't all sorted in an album. I have hundreds of albums and over 400gb of images and videos on Google Photos so I can't just download the whole archive.

I haven't found any way I can search on Google Photos for original files (and exclude those stored by HQ) though that would be annoying as I'd have to go through 13gb of files.

Preferably there would just be an extension or something I could add to add a button next to compress which said download archive first.

Probably because you have tried to upload a lot shortly before June 1 and that upload was postponed because everyone in the world was doing the same and Google became overloaded.

But you can screw down that usage by pressing the Recover storage button on photos.google.com/settings for the account used for backupping. That may take a day before your counter goes down due to compression to high quality.

If not enough check one.google.com/storage/management

Thanks for the reply. Nope, no more than maybe 2-3 images a day as I shot em. Just normal usage. Some of these on the "large" list are from earlier in the last couple of years. Well before the announcement of the upcoming change. But nothing higher than 1080p or 12Mp which should be covered by the "high quality" limitations.

That's a wrong idea: high quality is an option in the backupsettings - so you may have uploaded your 12 MP / 1080p media in original quality and that always has used as many bytes as they have and that's why you already were near to 15 GB before June 1 - but you never have noticed.

So my advice of using the Recover storage button stil is valid, because then these files will get compressed to high quality (still with 12 MP / 1080p), but not counted because they were uploaded before June 1.
