To excuse myself from the storage change coming up on June 1st, I plan to buy a new Pixel 5. But, I take a lot of pictures of my daughter. She is a Google Family member of mine. I would like to ask you if I can take pictures of her and share them with her, and she can save them and they won't count against my Family storage?

Answer:

Hello Steven,

All photos, regardless of origin will count against daughter’s 15GB allowance and subsequently against the Family storage once the 15GB is full,

my device pixel .If I upload from photo.Google.com, will my Google storage(15g) space be used?
I saw from the official website that Google Photos supports AVI format, but it is not possible to upload AVI format on the mobile phone.  This is definitely a bug.

Answer:

AVI is not a native Android device format, the help article doesn't mention it in the Android section.

Google Photos supports AVI uploads using the desktop Backup and Sync or direct uploads to photos.google.com

If you upload Pixel photos from photos.google.com your storage space will be used.

Answer:

So what format does Google photo support for video upload.  Since the Google photo app cannot upload the avi format, I suggest that the format supported by the app should be stated on the official website.

Answer:

I guess the app supports any formats it is expected to encounter in normal use.

Find hidden objects inside my photos I've used lens but I don't see anything or understand

Answer:

It's not clear exactly what you're talking about here. What kind of hidden text or pictures are you trying to find? What makes you think there is hidden text inside one of your pictures?

Regardless, this isn't the kind of thing that Google Photos is designed for. If there are hidden elements inside an image, you'll need software that was made for just that purpose (it's called steganography).

I have 10 gb of images backed up in Google photos with original quality. If I switch now to high quality for backup, what will happen to the images that I necked up before after June 2021?
Please answer me

Answer:

Hi Aniketh,

If you switch to High Quality (now renamed as Storage saver), any photos previously uploaded at original quality won't be affected unless you use the "Recover storage" option as explained here under "Reduce the size of your photos & videos" https://support.google.com/photos/answer/6220791?co=GENIE.Platform%3DAndroid&oco=1 Therefore, be sure not to activate the "Recover storage" option if you want to keep those photos at original quality.

Hi Pankesh Bhai meva Bhai Malupera,

Once your photos have been permanently deleted then you won't be able to get them back from Google Photos, first you'll need to check to see if they're still in your bin. You can find out how to do this by following the instructions at this link here.

Android

Open the Apple photos app (not Google Photos)
Tap Albums at the bottom
Tap Recently Deleted
Select all the photos you’d like to restore
Tap restore at the top right

Due to running out of SS drive space, I relocated my 'pictures' system folder to a larger drive. I have about 80GB of photos in 16,000 files.
I had previously read that I should untick the 'pictures' folder on the backup and sync preferences before moving the folder.
I later returned to preferences and ticked it again. Backup and sync stopped working and restarted like a fresh installation. I selected the folders again and clicked on done.
Backup and sync is now counting upwards of 98000 files it is preparing to sync. I only have about 22000 files on the PC.
I think it is going to resync everything again. Last time it did that it took 2 weeks to complete. I obviously want to avoid going through that.
Any suggestions, please?

Answer:

If you are on Mac, you picture-library also contains a terrible amount of facethumbnails etc.
So that may explain the 98000 and hopefully this excessive metadata is excluded in your settings under Change in the folderselection window.
But the app just needs to compare what is online already before it really starts to sync what is new only.
So the only thing you can do is: let it run and check what you get on recently added at https://photos.google.com/search/_tra_
If it really is going to produce duplicates, you are in trouble and should stop the machine immediately.
Hard to say more about now.
Good luck

Answer:

Thanks, this is a Windows 10 PC which I should have stated.
I have allowed it to run and got a pop up asking to continue to merge with some 2000 odd files that will sync and 85 conflicts that will save as separate files.
It sounds like it might be OK. I'll see what happens and post the outcome.
Thanks for your help.

Answer:

Still a bit mysterious then.
Maybe your former photoediting software (Picasa perhaps?) has produced hidden files which were neglected by a foregoing version of Backup & Sync, but not in the recently updated version anymore.
But you can check regurarly what you get on Photos and on Drive under the computer tab.
Good luck

Answer:

Good to hear, but do you understand these 3000 ???
Were they forgotten in the old situation?
Or are they on Drive only because of being non-compatible for Photos?

We like to learn also :-)
Have a nice weekend.

Hi Sathish,

if the deleted videos are still in the Google Photos Trash you might be able to restore them as explained in these instructions https://support.google.com/photos/answer/6128867?co=GENIE.Platform%3DAndroid&oco=1

Otherwise it's unfortunately not possible to recover videos or photos permanently deleted from the Google Photos Trash. However, you may install to your Android device a deleted photo recovery app https://play.google.com/store/search?q=recover%20deleted%20photos&c=apps and run a scan for anything to recover.

In addition I recommend that you contact the Google Drive support team to see if any deleted files may be recovered. Just open the Google Drive https://support.google.com/drive/?hl=en&authuser=0#topic=14940&contact=1 contact form, click Missing or deleted files, select a contact option, and be sure to tell them you permanently deleted files in Google Drive.

Hi, Jaynanda

Welcome to Google Photos Community Support Forum & thanks for your query.

Nevertheless, when you tap the delete icon in the Google Photos app, a warning appears telling you what will happen if you proceed. On your phone, that message asks, "Remove from Google account & synced devices?"

When you attempt to manually empty the trash/bin in Google Photos, another warning appears that explains the consequences of permanently deleting those pictures and videos.
If you choose to proceed anyway, there is nothing that any of the volunteers in this forum can do to help you recover your pictures.

However, you may install to your Android device a deleted photo recovery app (be sure to not pick one that requires rooting) https://play.google.com/store/search?q=recover%20deleted%20photos&c=apps;
and run a scan for anything to recover.

Question: Aligning Google Photos with Desktop PC

A number of years ago I used Google Drive to store a replica of my PC photo's folder structure which then copied and synched with Google Photos. I think I started doing this when I used Picasa. Folder structure is under "My Drive". I stopped doing this 4 or 5 years back and the synching fell into a state of disrepair. I'm now trying to get back to a form of alignment (which doesn't have to be 100% perfect) up to the current date- so that I can develop a workflow to maintain alignment going forward.

To summarise where I'm at currently:-

1- My PC folder structure is along the lines of folders for each year, with sub folders and sometime sub-sub folders by subject matter. The JPEG images are predominately from digital cameras but there are also some photos which may have been added from Android smartphones in there as well.

2 - Looking at my G-Drive folder structure there is alignment between the PC and G-Drive and eyeballing the content between the two it seems that the JPEGS are pretty much aligned as well, however I have gone through a re-naming process on the PC so that pictures from different manufactures have the same naming convention (based on date and time of picture). This renaming has not been reflected in the JPEGs stored in G-Photos.

3 - Over the past couple of days I've uploaded to G-Photos the missing years - with a couple of folders using a direct upload to G-Photos (using the Upload Photos icon) one folder taking photos which had been uploaded to G-Drive (again using the Upload Photos icon), but most of the missing years have been done using Google Backup & Sync (which is set to Photos and Videos - and not G-Drive, I also switched off the options for Desktop, Documents and Pictures shortly after installation ).

4 - Looking at G-Drive I have a number of folders under the "Computers Node
My Computer (which contains some folders that I do not know how they got there - but think it may be from Desktop/Documents/Pictures  in 3 above).
  • My Computer (which contains some folders that I do not know how they got there - but think it may be from Desktop/Documents/Pictures  in 3 above).
  • My Computer(1) - containing folders 2017 & 2018 (along with JPEGS)
  • My Computer(2) - containing folders 2015, 2016, 2017 & 2018 (along with JPEGS)
Between My Computer (1) & (2) there are some, but not all of the pictures which are in the source folders on my PC.

My questions (which I hope someone will be able to assist with are:-

A - If I rename a JPEG which already exists in G-Photos will it be uploaded a second time through Backup and Sync - a couple of tests I have done seems to indicate that it will not?

B - What are the folders and files in G-Drive and how can I clean them up so that they more accurately reflect the source folder structure on my PC?

C - Currently I have set Backup and Sync for individual year folders - they all exist under a higher level folder (Digital Pics) - at some stage can I blow this setup away and just have a single folder (Digital Pics) - which will then re-sync but not load any photos (unless I have added photos into say 2004 - which has not been sync'd under 4 above, and are there any risks to this.

D - Once I'm happy can I then blow away all the photos contained under My Drive (since this is a partial replica of what I have on my PC (with non Google backups) thus saving G-Drive storage space.

My understanding is that if I am able to complete the Backup and Synch process before 1 June (I think it's mostly done) then I will have all of my photos (Android, Pixel and Uploaded) without eating into my Google storage allowance.

Finally sorry if this is a long post but you do ask for as much info as possible and I hope that I've outlined everything as clearly and succinctly as possible.

Thanks in anticipation of your help.

Answer:

Sorry you haven’t had a reply to date, for some reason I didn’t see this yesterday.I will read through in more detail this afternoon and let you know what I think.

Answer:

Hi Malcolm,

A - You are correct that renamed JPEGs will not be uploaded a second time if there are no other changes made.

B - The folders in G-Drive could have been created by using G-Drive sync or the legacy 'sync Google Photos to Google Drive' setting which was discontinued in 2019  In the second case they may not use storage, but if you delete the G-Photos copy they will inherit the MB value from G-Photos even if they were uploaded at HQ  They are best deleted as the default for all G-Drive files is to use storage, after double checking G-Drive sync is set at Don't sync to this computer

C - I would then
  1. disconnect all the folders in preferences so that My computer has 0 connected folders
  2. Delete  My Computer and the other two instances then empty the trash
  3. Choose Digital Pics and let it loose
A couple of pointers if you don't use Favourites
https://photos.google.com/search/_tra_ shows recently added uploads. If you bulk select and use the 3 dot option to Favourite it will help to resolve any reuploads.

You can Recover storage at https://photos.google.com/settings but only once per day so compressing any stragglers from previous uploads is best done ASAP

Regards,

Peter

Answer:

Hi Peter
Thanks for your quick and helpful response - sorry I've been a bit tardy in replying, but I actually typed up the answer twice and got called away each time, and by the time I returned the PC had gone to sleep and I'd lost the lot. I've learned my lesson and prepared this in G-Docs and copy / pasted into communities!

I was able to successfully upload all my photos on my PC to G-Photos using Backup & Synch before the 1 June cut off date - so that was pretty successful.

What I've now got is:

On my PC
  • Folder structure  along the lines of folders for each year, with sub folders by subject matter.

On G-Drive
  • I've blown away the replica of the PC folder structure in My Drive which replicated the PC folder structure (saving quite a few GB of drive storage) - no effect on images stored in G-Photos.
  • In G-Drive under Computers I have three My Computer sub folders (0), (1) & (2) - where (in the case of My Computer 1 & 2) I used G-Backup & Synch for individual year folders just before 1 June.

What I think I need to do now to the whole set up is:-
  • In G-Drive Blow away the folders My Computer (1) and My Computer (2) - this will not delete any of the photos in G-Photo's (nor on my PC as I've chosen not to Synch G-Drive to my computer & not to remove coth copies unger the G-Drive settings in preferences).
  • Add a new folder into G-Backup&Synch for the folder structure on my PC (above) ie MyPics / YYYY / subject matter 1; subject matter 2 etc.(around 30 images / 100GB). If I am correct in my thinking and from your previous response they synch process should start, but no additional photos will actually be uploaded as they're already in G-Photos.

Would I be correct in thinking that the synching process will not actually upload a photo unless it actually needs it in G-Photos nd the initial part of the synch only compares the relevant metadata between what's on the PC and in G-Photos and if there is a match then skip any physical upload.

Thanks for your help & the time you spent responding. I also found https://photos.google.com/search/_tra_ showing recently added uploads helpful in tagging uploads by day of upload for later review. One thing I found was that the bulk select was not quite as easy as I though. Selecting the checkbox at the top right was limited to a selection of 500 images only - but I did discover that paging down several screen gave the opportunity to select another 500 images & so on until all for the day had been selected. One of the things I think Google could improve on in G-Photos would be to have an advanced search capability - so for example I could select all images in my library which had been taken with a Nikon D3500 for example. I would not be surprised if Google did not suck in every bit of metadata associated with each uploaded image - so it must be available, and hence possible.

Hi Malcolm,

I think I would go a step further and remove My Computer (0) which I assume is the very first My Computer as the same photos in different sub folders may cause confusion with skipped files.

Starting with a fresh canvas and Choosing My Pics / YYYY / etc will recreate My Computer
  1. Backup and Sync will scan the chosen folders
  2. Each file is checked to see if it already exists in Google Photos and a storage free stub file is created under https://drive.google.com/drive/computers building a mirror hierarchy matching the source computer's folders
  3. The stub file is linked to the existing photo in Google Photos
I am not sure about the physical upload being skipped or not, but your description would be the logical way of dong it.

Regarding searching and selecting.

You can search by camera type as per the screenshot online.

For selecting in the search results.
  1. Select the first photo
  2. Press the End key
  3. Press and hold down shift - move the mouse - wait until the photos are shaded blue - Click om the last photo - release the shift key - press the End key
  4. If the End key doesn't work, press page down to regain focus
  5. Repeat step 3 to the end, maximum 20,000

Regards,

Peter

Did not found all photos of screenshots after doing backup and restore in Google photos and gallery.

Such questions can't be answered.
Did you check before if all were on photos.google.com if they all were there?
You still can do that probably.
Sorry

Question: Is this picture taken recently

My friend said this is a picture of her grandma in the hospital

If you move up the pic a bit you will see its date.
If you move down to the bottom, you will see the brand of her camera. Then the date is correct, but if there is no technical info, the picture was send via social media and their real date is unknown.
But why you don't ask you friend directly?

Question: Restore my deleted videos from the last six months or the past year

Its pics n videos of me n my wife

Hi Matthew,

As a volunteer at Google Photos, I am not able to recover your deleted photos. I can only offer suggestions:

If you are having trouble finding photos or videos, and for instances when you deleted photos and videos but cannot find them in Trash, please see this "Missing photos troubleshooter."

How did items get sent to Trash?
When you use the Google Photos app to delete photos or videos, you will see a confirmation message, "Remove from Google account, Google Drive, synced devices, and places it's shared?" If you click "Move to Trash," your photo or video will be removed from the Google Photos website, removed from Google Drive, and removed from all synced devices such as Android smart phones, iPads, iPhones, and computers.

If your phone is getting full and you want to delete items to make room for new items, instead of moving the items to Trash, it's much safer to use the Free Up Space feature in the Google Photos app. Free Up Space will remove only the items that have been successfully backed up to Google Photos in the cloud. All items that were NOT successfully backed up will remain on your device. However, you should be aware that if you have only one version of your photo or video in the cloud and nowhere else, you no longer have a back up. If you accidentally permanently delete your one and only version(s) from the cloud, or delete your Google account, or get locked out of your account, there will be no way to get your photos back.

You may have already checked the Google Photos Trash bin and found nothing there. There are two possible reasons why the Trash bin is empty
  1. 60 days have already passed since you sent a photo or video to the Trash. Photos and videos live in Trash for only 60 days before they are automatically and permanently deleted. You will not receive a notice that the items were deleted.
  2. You already emptied the Trash prior to 60 days of a deletion. When you chose to delete an item, you confirmed the warning box "Empty trash? Permanently delete items." Clicking the blue Delete button confirms the permanent deletion of your Trash items. Once the items are permanently deleted, the deletion is forever, and there is no way the Google Photos team can recover them.

Photos will not be deleted.
However, the moment the 15 GB free space becomes full, you will lose access to all the data including Gmail. Photos & documents on Google Drive, unless you deletes something & bring the data within the free limit.
