I suggest you clear the cached & stored data of the Google Photos app & then reinstall the app.
You can do that through these steps.
  • On your Android phone, open the Settings.
  • Tap Apps and notifications.
  • Tap Show all apps.
  • Tap Google Photos.
  • Tap Storage and cache.
  • Tap Clear storage.
  • Next, uninstall the Google Photos app. 
  • Power off the phone & then restart.
  • Install the latest version of the Google Photos app through the Play Store.
Log into your profile & see whether that helps to overcome the current

Without me still understanding how, I have accidentally let my phone delete a few of my picture folders. Luckily I had all of them backuped bij Google Photos. However, when checking the folder to be safe in Google photos, the folders did appear but the content was made up of all black pictures and videos which could not be viewed. Now the folders have disappeared from there completely as well. I have chacked the bin, they are not in there. Better yet, the bin is completely empty. Luckily, the individual photos seem to be all luckily backuped by Google but the folders are gone and I would really like to get those back again as some had contant spanning over several years.

Emptied folders are not shown. 
But Google Photos does not believe in oldmodish folders which never can survive your (old) phone. 
And even not by accident, there always will come a day that your phone needs space and then you also have to delete a lot of old photos (and movies) in such folders. 
So the right way would have been (from start) is to build thematic albums within the Library page of the app (or on the site photos.google.com in your laptop). See screenshot on community. 
Can't help that wisdom seldom comes earlier :-)

Ik verwachte jou natuurlijk niet in Zweden en hopelijk gaat het daar nu ook iets beter met corona. 
Even verder in het Engels voor het geval "collega-volontairs" nog iets willen toevoegen.

Such albums at Google don't take additional storage in your account because they don't contain copy-files, but just reference to the main pool on the Photos-page. Albums also can set-up for temporary sharing, because deleting that album after some weeks does not delete the original files. 
And they simply can be downloaded to your computer via https://photos.google.com/albums in your preferred browser, like Chrome. 
Etc. 
 
PS: sites.google.com/site/picasaresources/Home gives better information then Google itself :-)

Else the result will be much too crowded. 

PS: in Google Photos you can select up to 9 pictures to create a collage, so if you create 9 collages with 6 pictures and you combine these 9 to one complete collage with 54 pictures, you are near to your goal. 
But the resolution of the complete collage will be by far too low (probably 1048x1048px) to be good for a large print. 

PS: there are many collages-app so you will need to try a lot to find a good one. We can't inform you about third party apps unless we known one accidently. We are private volonteers here.

  5. Select the Shopping cart icon

Sending files per mail always has been restricted and in Gmail to 25 MB, which is about 5 normal pictures (movies always are too large). 
But if you select more then 10 MB and then share to Gmail, you will see a proposal to downsize considerably or to send them as a link. It is up to your receiver what is acceptable, because if he wants full quality, then you should select send as a link and then he/she can download from Google (they don't need to have a Google account, but some receivers get frightened - so do warn them that all is private and safe).

There is currently not a specific decoder ring filter in Google Photos to reveal secret messages in images.

However, if this is like a 'treasure hunt/Where's Wally?/magic mirror' type of image, you might try opening the image in Google Photos > Select Edit > Select the fine tune options in the lower menu and play around with things like contrast, color tints, etc. to see if that helps.

Otherwise, simply ask the image owner what they want to say. Sometimes one word is worth a thousand pictures.

According to support this is possible:
  1. Select which photos to add to your partner account.

When I try this on my Android device, I can share all photos - I can also share photos from a specific date, but I cannot see the feature where you select one or more face groups to share.

The steps: Photos Settings -> Partner Sharing -> Get started -> Select partner -> (only option here is to show photos from a specific date) Next -> Send invitation (All photos shared, therefore I do not send the invitation; because I only wanted to share with her photos of herself).

Anyone with the solution here, or is this a bug?

Make sure you have installed all software updates via the Play Store and that  face grouping turn on. (Google Photos > Profile icon > Settings > Group similar faces > Face Grouping = on --dot will be blue and toggled to the right.)

Then I was able to see the option for face sharing within partner sharing.
  1. Open Google Photos
  2. Select Profile icon
  3. Select Settings
  4. Select Partner Sharing
  5. Select Get started
  6. Select Partner
  7. Select Photos of specific people
If the option in step 7 doesn't show up, it may not be available in your area.

Instead, you might try sharing an album that automatically updates with images of a specific person.
  1. Open Google Photos
  2. Select Sharing
  3. Select Shared album
  4. Add an album title and select "Select people and pets" option at the bottom
  5. Read the support text and then select the face grouping to add

Then you need to save the content of that album to your own library and then create a new album which is then a part of your own collection. I always do that with shared stuff, also to have the option to make a selection and to improve the pictures by a bit of editing. 

PS: be aware that the ambient shows via the Home app and Chromecast only show a minor selection of the albums selected. Probably because of datastream restrictions.

i've ask the person to change it and give it a title, and it seemed to show up as an album that i can choose from the google home app.

  • If you want to have that action to be taken on the entire collection, then please use the "Free up space" options through the settings menu.

So the google dashboard only shows you 5000+, but I was looking for the exact amount. Is there a way to find this without downloading all my photos and counting them? thanks.

There is only a way to see an accurate count by using Gmail on an Android if only one account is being used on the device. It assumes Backup & sync is activated and up to date.
  1. Go to Gmail
  2. Compose
  3. tap the paperclip-> Attach file
  4. Browse files in Photos and the photos count gives an accurate number.
    • Archived items are excluded

Following is text from the official Google Photos Help page about deleting and restoring photos and videos: 
 
Restore photos & videos
If you deleted an item and want it back, check your trash to see if it’s there.
  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Photos app .
  2. At the bottom, tap Library  Trash .
  3. Touch and hold the photo or video you want to restore.
  4. At the bottom, tap Restore. The photo or video will be back:
    • In your phone’s gallery app
    • In your Google Photos library
    • In any albums it was in
If the item is not in your trash, it may be permanently deleted.
    Important:
    • If you delete a photo or video that’s backed up in Google Photos, it will stay in your trash for 60 days.
    • If you delete an item from your Android device without it being backed up, it will stay in your trash for 60 days.
    • If you see a photo or video in Google Photos that you think you deleted, it might be on a removable memory card. To delete it, use your device’s gallery app.
    Empty your trash
    If you see a request to "Delete permanently" when you try to move an item to trash, your trash is full. Your trash can hold 1.5GB.
     
    Important: If you empty your trash, you permanently delete any items in your trash.
     
    Don't see the photo or video?
    If a deleted photo or video isn't in trash, you can’t restore it. You won't be able to restore a photo if:
    • You moved it to trash more than 60 days ago.
    • You moved it to trash, then emptied your trash.
    • You permanently deleted it from your trash.
    • You permanently deleted it from your device’s Gallery app, without backing it up first.
    When you attempt to manually empty the trash bin in Google Photos, a warning message box appears that explains you are about to permanently delete those pictures and videos. If you choose to proceed anyway, there is nothing that any of the volunteers in this forum can do to help you recover your pictures. 
     
    The information on the following Google Photos Help pages will help you become more familiar with finding, deleting, and restoring your pictures: 
     
     
    If you deleted pictures or videos that were not previously backed up to your account through the Google Photos app, then unfortunately there's nothing that Google or any of the volunteers in this Help Community can do to recover them. 
     
    Files that existed only on your phone, ones that were never uploaded to the cloud, cannot be recovered or restored by a cloud storage service. Simply put, Google can't help you recover files it never had in the first place.
