The Backup and Sync setting applies to any photos in the Desktop, Documents, or Pictures libraries or folder outside those libraries selected with the Choose Folder option.

Create a Google Photos folder applies to photos uploaded direct to the web or mobile uploads and is a downstream path via Google Drive for those photos if you choose to sync them to your computer. The Google Photos folder is best considered as a Read only downstream path and does not use Drive quota.

Sync photos and videos from Google Drive temporarily (while the setting is on) shows photos in Google Photos. Typically photos uploaded to https://drive.google.com/drive/my-drive via the Google Drive sync setting.

Some photos is no problem - all photos is too complex.

Open a picture in the Google Photos app and hit the 3 dots: then you will see the download option.

In your gallery they can be found in the "album" (= device folder) Restored.

I've been a Google Photos user for some time now. It has been awesome. The search features is amazing. If I want to look photo photos I took with text it searches for it. If I want photos of barns it allows me to search. Face detection is great. Photobook ordering is awesome.

In the past unlimited photo storage was amazing. But I understand why that had to come to an end.

I completely understand the reason why one has to charge money as time goes on, but what I don't understand is how the product has gone downhill.

I have Android 11 on my One Plus One 8 from last year.

I have always used Google Photos to star, edit and upload to Facebook direct (not link). It has always worked well. Even if it was 100 photos or even a some videos in there.

Now it seems things have progressively gotten worse over the past 3-4 months.

Now I need to confirm my edits by giving permission to each edit.
Then it has to upload those edits manually later, then I have to wait.
Mirror images is still not an option. Having to manually upload to Snapseed and back is just way too many steps considering what else this app can do.
Tonight I couldn't upload more than 30 photos and some videos to facebook, it just pretends to upload to facebook but it never shows up.
When I edit videos from the favorites area it disappears after the edit. I can get around this if I browse outside of the favorites area. But if you have thousands of photos it takes FOREVER compared to the hand selected starred area.
If I edit the video thru the main area of all photos it does allow me to save it, but after the edit it makes a copy but doesn't automatically upload to Google Photos. In several cases it never shows up in Google Photos. It is buried in the camera's app.
To get around all these issues I have to simply make my edits and upload to Google Drive, then go to the computer to upload to facebook and it works fine.

What the heck happened? I never had issues like this before. I understand there are other apps involved but the free version worked so well and flawless it seems so frustrating to go back in time, worse than ever, buggy and now to be charged for this.

What's going on here Google?

You shouldn't delete the photos on your phone in a straightforward manner since back up sync is on.

To delete any specific picture, please tap to open & then slide up. Next tap on the option "Delete from device". That will ensure continued availability of the pic in Google Photos.

In the web app https://photos.google.com/ right-click > Search Google for image.
Google finds similar images, which may also lead to the name.

It sort of works as it recognises my daughter, one of her friends and the 4 or so pictures of my in laws as people...but not the hundreds of the rest of us.

There is no option for me to change it to high quality, and this is talking up space in my Google drive. Whenever I upload a video to test weather it takes up the 15 GB storage, it indeed does take up space by uploading in original quality

Thanks for your help trying to assist me PeteranDi! I have tried clearing google photo's app data, and even tried to factory reset it and install it again. It is still giving me this error of not showing the option to change to HQ.

By the way, I was indeed using the same account to backup, and it was just that I tried filling up my google drive storage to see if google photos would upload in HQ, but all it did was to get me over the 15 GB limit as seen in the other picture I had on this post. I am on the latest android 11 update (May 2021), so I am really confused why this is not working. Again, thanks for trying to assist me in this matter! 😀

But it has high resolution which take about a factor 3 less space at Google in your account.

So check the settings under your profile and then look under backup.

However, you can remove specific photos from an automatic album, for example the one used as a cover. To remove the photos open the album, tap the 3-dot icon, tap Remove results, select the photos to remove, and confirm.
