If you want to store your photos on the cloud, please start Backup and sync. Further, ensure that the upload doesn't remain stuck up for some reason.
However, if you wish to get back the photos to your phone, you have two options.
- Either download each one by one.

Select only the google photos option there. Also, select the option "send download link via email".
Preparation of the download will take some time.

Nevertheless, the photos stored on the phone are always of original quality. When we choose cloud storage in a high-quality format, a marginal deterioration does happen. Once we use the "free up space" option, the app starts showing the pictures on the cloud in this slightly reduced quality. However, the difference wouldn't be perceivable.

I appreciate you for trying to fix the issue yourself and letting us know the steps you have tried. I recommend trying the steps below in sequence, this may help in fixing the issue:
- Do a force restart by holding the home and power buttons at the same time until the Apple boot logoappears.
- If the application freezes or is not responding, you can force the app to close by holding the power button until the red slider Slide to Power Off appears. Do not slide the slider. Instead, hold the home button for 5 or 6 seconds, and you should be returned to the home screen.
Lastly, you can try the below mentioned steps if all else fails:
- Go to Settings.
- Turn on Airplane Mode.
- Wait a few seconds, and turn it back off.
- Tap on the Settings icon.
- Select the General menu.
- Scroll to the bottom and tap on Reset.
- Select Reset Network Settings.
- The device will take a minute or so to reboot.

Google photos should occupy zero space for the activities up to 31st May if you have chosen to save the pics in High-Quality format.
Currently, the available space is shared between:
- Gmail
- Files on Google Drive
- Pictures in original quality & videos in an incompatible format in Google Photos collection.
To check what is occupying the space, you need to visit this link.
There, you will also find some tips on how to retrieve some of the storage space.
Follow those, but while doing so please ensure that you are not losing some critical data.
However, this link will show only the quantum of Original Quality photos & offer an option to delete those.

You can delete the data or pictures in the context of Google Photos yourself.
Locate the required date. Next, long-press the first photo and stroke down while still in a pressed condition, to select thae entire range for that day & hit the bin icon in the top right corner.
Next, visit the bin & empty that to remove the pictures permanently.
But then, that becomes an irreversible action. Once the bin is emptied, the photos could never be brought back.
Still, the pictures on your phone can be brought back through some recovery software. Then, look for some shredder app in the play store to wipe-out that permanently.

However, it's not clear in which search tab you wish to add more pictures. The actions may differ greatly between "People & Pets" or "Places" or "Things".
To add more pictures to the search results in the People & pets section. Please follow these steps.
First, open the pic in which some persons appear.
Scroll up & there you will see a remark "1 Face available to add" and a pencil icon next to that.
Tap on the pencil symbol & tap the plus sign on the thumbnail picture.
Then either you can use any of the suggested faces, or tap the + sign at the top right corner to create a new group.
You can repeat that with all the pictures containing some faces.
Next, to have more pictures in places, the photos need to have location data.
You can add or edit that by accessing the photo through https://photos.google.com/
Tap the desired photo. Tap again to make the options to become visible in the top row. Tap the encircled letter "i" and then tap "Where was this taken?". Enter a location & save that.
Then Google Photos will include that in places collection.
To improve the section "Things" there is no such direct action. However, when you scroll down in the search section, you will find a prompt requesting "Help improve Google Photos".
Once clicked, the app would present several photos from your collection to understand what's important to you in each of those.
The exercise may become tedious. However, after going through the task, the grouping under various categories improves considerably.

Do you mean "Factory reset" by the term flash?
Then the factory reset doesn't affect the pictures backed up in Google Photos provided you had turned on "Backup and sync" and ensuring from time to time that the backup is not stuck for some reason like "witing for WiFi" etc.
Download the app, log into your account & then you will see all the pictures there.
Through the app, you can download the pics once again to your phone.
However, as said earlier, if the backup was imperfect, then there is no way to get back those photos.

I was trying to make one more manual backup by copying files into another folder outside DCIM folder. But this time I did a move instead of copy (photos are already backed up on the cloud). Then I was trying to delete them from photos app and also deleted it from my Bin folder, turns out those photos which I moved were just a Symbolic link(linux thing) and all my moved photos were deleted from another folder as well, this happened 3 weeks back.
I tried to check solution online, one plausible solution was to use some recovery software to search it on the device and recover it. But every application needs root privileges and that is not possible without rooting it, to root the phone I need to flash everything, this will make more difficult to recover the photos. So I gave up!
But suddenly today, when I saw the GPhotos app the there is this thing called "Recent Highlights" and there were 3 pictures in the form of collage, animation and stylized one. First thing I did was to save those, then I thought that these photos are still somewhere on google's server maybe cached or something.
So, I'm requesting the development team or whoever manages this feature, please add some feature to recover photos by this way.
Any other thoughts how can I recover my photos are also appreciated!

This has been going on for about 2 months! It did work perfectly prior to two months (give or take a few days). I don't know if there is a hiccup between some update of Windows vs Google sync or whatever is causing this but Its incredibly frustrating when I think photos are being safely backed up on my Google Drive and now I have to keep checking through 18 gigs of backup to see if ANY one of my items backed up!
I am using Windows 10 Pro with Windows Defender Security Center. Google Chrome is my preferred -and default- search engine As of 10 p.m last night (March 20th) Each program has been updated and are running without issues.

Hi. I have recently reinstalled the Photos app on my S8 running Oreo. Now, when I open the app, I just have "getting photos" and it only displays any locally stored images. I have tried clearing data & cache, removing SD, rebooting phone, uninstall/reinstall of the app, connecting power and wifi, signing in and out of the app and nothing seems to work.

It can stop for a week or more for unknown reasons - so if you did not change your preference in the setting, just be patient because we can not ring the bell there.
But it also depends on your collection and your efforts to create something more nice then just a growing bulk, eg by some editing and by creating thematic albums.

3. Items deleted from your YouTube Channel can not be recovered.
4. Items deleted from your Gmail are stored in trash for 30 days and then are Auto-Deleted from trash and can not be recovered.

Understand your point.
When we had 8 GB or 16 GB memory in the phones, the "Free up space" option was working like a magic.
However, with the newer variants with 64 or 128 GB internal memory, that doesn't remain so much attractive.
Nevertheless, the phone may require a factory reset for some unknown reason. The SD card can become corrupt & so on. Having multiple backups of photos physically as well as on some cloud becomes a robust strategy to avoid any such catastrophe.
Further, Google Photos offers some interesting features like "Memories" or Creations, search on different categories & so on. And these features are evolving over the days.
Nevertheless, if you wish to bring back the photos to your device, you have two options.
- Either download each one by one.
- Or, you can arrange for a download through https://takeout.google.com/
Select only the google photos option there. Also, select the option "send download link via email".
Preparation of the download will take some time.
Once ready, you will get an email notification. Unzip the attachments on your phone, which will bring back all the pictures to your phone's internal memory.

Several of my photos have had their time stamps and geo location changed, so they appear out of order on my phone. It seems like mostly ones that I was viewing recently (but not editing!). The timestamp changes are irregular (different, semi random, and not the last time opened). Many of them have moved to very recent, and some of them are of my ex, which is distressing to have mixed up with recent pics.

A complete reset of the Google Photos app may be required.
- Check the app trash to make sure there are no photos and videos mistakenly deleted
- Empty the trash
- tap the account icon at the top right
- tap your email address and select Use without an account
- Power down/up or restart the device
- sign in again making sure you are using the correct email
- check that the Backup & sync settings are correct and using the correct email
- wait until getting photos finishes, could take a while
- Please wait until it completes leaving the app open and plugged in if necessary.

Hi. I have recently reinstalled the Photos app on my S8 running Oreo. Now, when I open the app, I just have "getting photos" and it only displays any locally stored images. My photos are all available on the web at photos.google.com and I can search for images. So, for example, if I search for a place, all of the images are returned taken in that place and they are then visible permanently in the app.

I do understand the inconvenience as your Google Photos app is stuck. Therefore, I recommend trying the steps below in sequence, this may help in fixing the issue:
- Make sure your device is up-to-date.
- Make sure the App is up-to-date.
- Try restarting the App through the following steps:
- Go to your App Settings.
- Click stop on the afflicted App with the Force Stop button.
- Wait a few seconds to make sure the App has stopped processing, and then attempt to re-start it.
- Close the background running apps through the following steps:
- Go to your App Settings.
- Display the Active Apps on your device.
- Select the App you wish to close and Force Stop it.
- Repeat this step with all active Apps.
- Try clearing your App cache through the following steps:
- Tap the system Settings tab on the main screen of your device.
- Tap the General section of settings that is on the far right.
- Tap Storage in the General tab.
- Clear the cache data once storage calculates the data.
- Back out of the storage section.
- Tap Applications and find the application in question.

Hello Maggie,
If the space is not getting freed up it is normally because you are deleting HQ photos which do not count against storage.
Head over to https://one.google.com/storage/management and check if the storage is in any of the trash places, or large files in Gmail, Drive & Photos, or just below in Unsupported videos. This should give a clue on where the storage is being used.
You could also use Recover storage at Settings - Google Photos - Click here to reduce the storage to zero for photos and videos.

What you expect is the precise feature in the Google Photos video editor.
Open any video. Tap to reveal the control & the edit symbol - 2nd from the left in the bottom row. Tap that & then you will see an option to export frame.
Select an appropriate one by tapping on the horizontal bar below & export the best to have a photo from that.
