This is total BS - I'm furious that now Google Photo is essentially holding 55k+ photos of mine hostage. WHY would I ever need a duplicate copy? I had NO idea when I got sucked down the Google Drive hole that they were going to do this. Now, they want me to pay to store pictures that I already pay to store...Not cool - oh and if everyone here is right - I can't delete them from Google Photo, without also deleting them from iCloud.

Sorry to see that you now have an unpleasant experience using this service. 

 But as you wrote yourself, good quality canvas needs good file quality.  The device that prints on canvas does not have the function of detecting low resolution of the picture, and will not be able to improve its quality - it receives the file and prints on the canvas automatically. 

For a better experience, you can try again to select another high resolution photo and then you will see that you got what you expected.

Tanya, your reply was unfortunately not too helpful as I did send a high quality photo but got a very poor result. As to trying again, why would I waste any more money on a bad product. The appropriate response from Google photos would be to offer a refund or to print another photo at no additional cost. But not happening. Too bad, lost my business and my recommendation.

However, when I try to download any photo from the album, or even save it to my own Google Photos albums, it compresses it to a JPG. Every other post I've found on the topic describes issues with compression during the upload process. However, she is able to download the ARW files from the same album without any difficulty. However, for me it downloads as JPG no matter what I do.

How can I get the original ARW file on my devices?

Head over to https://one.google.com/storage/management and check if the storage is in any of the trash places, or large files in Gmail, Drive & Photos, or just below in Unsupported videos. This should give a clue on where the storage is being used.

I agree! One of my main reasons for using both Google Photos and Google Drive is to have all my iPhone photos automatically appear in my Google Drive folder. Making users manually sync/download their photos is a huge step backwards, not to mention having everything out of sync as soon as you make a deletion or edit from one place and not the other. I'm really upset and confused by this ridiculous downgrade to the service.

Of course Google does not tell about the real reasons behind, but it is that the optional Google Photos folders has caused much confusion and many unsolvable troubles since it birth shortly after the introduction of Google Photos in 2015. 
I know that because I am volunteering on their forums since years. 

And there are good workarounds. If you are on modern Windows, OneDrive is your main cloud and by installing the OD-app on your phone, you easily can sync down new pics shooted. But if you don't want to use OD as an additional cloud, you only need to move the new pics out of the Camera-album for storing them in your backupfolder. 
The same with Dropbox, but then you also need a Dropbox on pc. 

And of course Apple-users should not use Google at all :-)

I disagree that it is a small percentage of users.  It made logical sense the way it was (and it took a long time to get there).  It does not make logical sense with the changes they are implementing.  That affects everyone.  "Affects a small percentage of users" is a long time Google excuse for dropping things.  This change is the opposite of making usability easier.  I'm waiting for the call from my dad, "I deleted all these photos from the Google thing, and they're still there!"

Call me a "small percentage".  But what's lost is it's a small percentage of advocates, like me, that brought attention to Google products.  Now, the frustrated small percentage, like me, are spending time looking for alternatives.  And the people we brought to Google will follow.  You can't quit the game once you're on top.  Ask Microsoft.

When you files are on Google Drive (photos or other file) it is very easy to manage them. For example you can autosync with NAS, external storage or different cloud drive. What is unsafe is keeping all pictures on Android or Google Photos. Moreover managing your picture is a nightmare now.
Solution could be very simple - just give users a choice to sync or not to the google drive.

Removing a feature because some don't understand how to use seems odd.

My second chat MAY have solved my problem. We still have Picasa 3 on our PC. Picasa is now a Google product, instead of being defunct, like we expected, it is sending our photos to Google Photo. Our photos go back to 2002, in various albums and duplicates. This is what's filling up our account, as we delete, it keeps refilling. This seems to make sense, I hope it helps others. If not, who the heck knows what's happening.

I too still have Picasa on my computer. Picasa has been a Google app for many years and Google still owns it, but they decided to disable the connection with Google Photos. In the right upper corner of Picasa I see "Sign in with Google Account" but when I try it says "There was a problem authenticating your account". 
 
Picasa still works well on your computer, but is no longer connected to the cloud. So I wonder which "support" you chatted with.  More important is now to find out what really happens. 
 
You can check on https://one.google.com/storage whether storage is used by Drive, Gmail or Photos
On https://one.google.com/storage/management you can see which files use most storage in Photos, Drive and Gmail.
 
Storage used by Google Photos can be recovered:
  • By deleting files in Google Photos, but there are many complaints that it takes very long before the storage is recovered, if ever. 
  • The folder "Google Photos" in Google Drive starts using storage when the corresponding photos in Google Photos are deleted. Thus when you delete from Photos you may also have to delete the Google Photos folder in https://drive.google.com/drive/my-drive if you have one.
  • By using "Recover storage" on https://photos.google.com/settings. That will convert ALL (it's all or nothing) photos/videos to the free "High Quality". Save the ones you want to keep in original size somewhere else before you use this option.
  • By deleting unsupported videos on https://photos.google.com/unsupportedvideos (or via "Settings")
  • You can also check on https://get.google.com/albumarchive. There may be photos that are not shown in Google Photos, for example from Hangouts, which may use storage. 
To recover storage used by Drive or Gmail you must delete files. Note that the "Google Photos" folder in Drive may start using storage when the corresponding photos are deleted in Google Photos. Photos uploaded using Backup and sync on a computer may use storage in the computer section of Drive when they do not make it to Google Photos as "High Quality", for example unsupported RAW files.

Since you posted on Google Photos: you can transfer photos from one account to another. See this link. Also be aware of the fact that having photos/videos ONLY in Google Photos is not safe.
See Google Photos is NOT a "Backup" of Your Photos (and certainly not for mobile users)
So why not simply keep the second account as a kind of backup via "Partner sharing"?

I wanted to know if converting JPG & PNG file types to WebP would be a viable option. There are several extensions available on the Chrome Web Store providing methods for bulk conversions. 

However, before I even thought much longer about taking this route, would like some input about using this as an option.

Converting a photo to one that uses less storage than the "High Quality"will help to keep your usage low. 
You can upload a photo with less pixels, or more compressed, or both. All this can also be done in JPEG. In this album you see some examples of the same photos with different compression: 
 
I have no experience with .webp but a mini test makes me think that it is similar to JPEG compression. I use IrfanView (for Windows only) to "Save as" and "Batch convert".

To my opinion converting to webP is not a valuable option,  because it makes everything less usable for general applications in photosoftware and for sharing in future.
And you are living with wrong ideas about Google High quality: that's much better quality then heic as far as we talk about pictures. I have no experience if converting to webP is even more worse. 
Videos are much more complex and consuming and I have too less experience with HD-movies compressed to high quality - they stay HD, but with much less MB's. So their viewing quality will be degraded much more then happens with static pictures. 
Also PNG can be problematic - normally these files are not converted to jpg and can take quite a lot.  

If your stuff was backupped at high quality merely, your usage until June 1 never will grow anymore. 
Only new uploads after June 1 will start counting.

I received an email in the middle of the night notifying that an user was added to my Partner Sharing settings. This email was an automatically generated one from Google Photos. However, I never added this user. I have since changed all of my passwords to protect myself from further hacks. It's perplexing how this would have happened, as my Google Account showed no recent login activities from anyone in the past 28 days. The only activities shown are the logins I performed recently to change my password. 

Please investigate.

"Partner Sharing" is intended to share your Google Photos library with a single other partner.
  • In https://photos.google.com/settings you can select a partner you want to share your library with. 
  • When you already shared with a partner you cannot add another person.
  • The partner must accept the invitation, and can share back his/her library with you, and with no one else. 
It's not clear which message you got. Did anyone send you an invitation? Please give more details. A screenshot (post as attachment) may help.

I understand the Partner Sharing functionality, however I have never used it myself until my account was compromised.

The message that I received was a notification that someone was successfully added as an user to my Google Photos account's Partner Sharing. I did not send any invitations. The email address of the user was unknown to me. I have attached the screenshot of the automated email that I received.

It is another Google user, but it is an address that I don't recognize, likely a throwaway. I can provide more details in full if a Google employee is willing to contact me to investigate. I'm not certain if posting a screenshot like this in full is the right thing to do on a public forum.

I have checked for unauthorized apps and less secure apps settings. I have no unauthorized apps, and I do not have any less secure apps. I have enabled higher security settings to ensure no future compromised logins the moment the notification email was received. Thank you for suggesting that. 

It still doesn't answer how my account was compromised without my knowledge, and the fact that Google did not record any login attempts. My Google Photos account contained many photos of my child. I would like someone at Google to investigate as the user that was added was also a Google user with a Gmail account.

I will be filing a police report shortly.

I also got the same email alert that told me that my photo was shared through Partner sharing. I never invited anybody using Partner Sharing method, When I checked back the Setting for Partner Sharing, it was never configured. Can Google Photo explain this?
