I used my google accounts on two mobile devices, my smartphone and tablet. Recently I was experiencing some issues with backing up and syncing of photos between the Photos website and app.
I tried this solution:
- Open Play Store and locate the Photos app
- Uninstall, on newer builds this will uninstall updates back to the factory loaded version
- using the 3 dot menu disable auto update
- Open photos and test to see if it performs as it should, there may be some differences in layout and settings which can be ignored for now.
- return to Play Store and reinstall (updates)
- re-enable auto update if required
This solution worked in my tablet but doesn't work for my smartphone. The app in my smartphone just shows it's loading with the message 'Getting photos'. Any idea why? I greatly appreciate your help in this matter.

Long before I set up and started my automatically backed up Google Photos account (which is synced to my phone), I had uploaded a shared folder for my family to share photos of a trip.
The trip folder is stored in my Google Drive and has multiple photo folders in it contributed from different family members.
When I activated my Google Photos account, MY photos (not my family's photos) from that trip showed up in Google Photos (even though they are not on my phone - new phone) .
So... do I have two copies of my travel photos? Or are they linked somehow between the two locations in that if I delete the folder, they will also disappear? Can I now delete my photos in the shared folder, and will they still stay in Google photos? If I edit a photo in Google photos, will it be affected in the Google Drive folder or are they completely separate files? Are the photos in Google Drive shared album affecting my space? As I have the unlimited photo storage option in Google Photos.

We would need to analyse it a bit more but I am just about finished for today. As I said, ideally, I would like to keep my photos on Google Photos and delete them off the drive, and regain my space back. I would also like to take my favourites from my family and keep them on Google Photos.
