Thank you. The contact I most want to change is the one for myself.  How long must I wait for it to disappear from the most recent list at the top? Also, in trying to find a way to change it, I opened "inspect" and did something (I think I clicked on html) that changed the name that formerly appeared as my own misspelled name to a bunch of other stuff and I don't know how to undo that.

I too have a problem with deleting a contact that only appears in google photos when I start to type an email address for sharing. This contact is not among the most recent but appears only when I start to type the first few letters of an email address - it pops up; resulting in having to type the entire email address. I can not find this contact anywhere in my contacts and when I start typing the first few letters in gmail or any where else it will not pop up, just in photos share.

I agree with what you've written.  Google will have to change the search for contacts feature or allow one to type in an email address as I can on a phone.  
On my computer, I can type in a gmail account address but if it is NOT in the list of contacts shown in google photos, then it won't accept it or allow the photos to be sent to that address.  
Some of my contacts are not contacts from my google contact list but facebook 'friends' whom I have never emailed anything to.
I guess I can use the 'create link' feature and go from there.  Thanks for that!  Much appreciated.

This is an unsolved problem in the Android-app and you should use its feedback option in order to complain straight to Google, because this forum is run by volonteers. 
But there are not much complaints, simply because most users never type any descriptions. 

Besides: in most cases you are not viewing the pictures stored at Google, but the pictures still stored on your phone which have no descriptions at all because these are stored in a separate database at Google.

There was a clever logic in that one.

So what I have now after installing your new "Backup" application? Yes.. it uploaded ALL those sub-directories also to the cloud. duplicating all my photos with not modified ones which I have around 30 000. 

Due to this photos "Assistant" is now continuously pushing "new" creations of old photos.

So how do I deal with this issue? How to clean from the cloud photos which are not supposed to be there? Meaning original not modified photos which are in sub directories.

For standard canvas, there is no increased protection against moisture, dust, sun fading, or contamination from smoke and food.  Therefore, your best bet is to protect your canvases with plastic sheeting / film  or glass, as they may lose their original appearance over time.

If you have photos in Original quality and want to save some space, change your already backed-up photos and videos to High quality. This setting will not appear if you don't have any photos in Original quality.

Your own albums can be sorted on their names now - just at right from the word Albums on the Library-page and then hit the words Most recent. Then you will see the option to sort on names.

PS: your own albums and all showbusiness at Places and Things etc. take no additional storage space in your account. But you may ask Google via the feedback option to provide a switch to be able to hide all their disturbing additions. The app should be much more simple and less confusing indeed.

If you install the Google One app there is a one time option to restore up to 200 most recent photos to the device. I say up to because after the Restore is finished there will be a maximum of 200 photos on the device including their use of the device's local storage space.
 
Unfortunately the local folder structure can not be restored.
 
There is no requirement to join Google One, the option is available to everyone and there are no tools available to restore more unless one by one by selecting the 3 dot option to Download while viewing photos.

Google Photos folder (under Drive), and that folder is now disconnected from the Google Photos service.
  • Is it safe to delete the "Google Photos" directory, that was originally created and used by Google Photos?
  • A general question: if I got it right, every photo that I imported from my camera to my PC (under the Drive directory) before the transition, can now be found in three different places:
    1. ​The same folder in my PC (and the matching directory under Google Drive).
    2. Google Photos service (as the syncing option was on in Backup and Sync).
    3. Google Photos folder (under Drive), and that folder is now disconnected from the Google Photos service.
Did I understand correctly? If I did, how is the data quta being calculated (will deleting the Google Photos folder evacuate space, or is it just "weightlessly" there)?
  • About "Upload from Drive" feature: the blog post specifies that Google Photos has a new "Upload from Drive" feature. Welcome to the Google Photos Help Forum.

Just to let you know, if you'd delete a photo from your Google Photos, it will also delete the photo from the below places:
  • photos.google.com and any synced devices
  • Google Photos albums
  • Google Photos movies when you edit them.
  • Google Drive, for photos and videos that are synced with Google Drive.
  • Any shared albums you may have added them to.
That being said, you can always leave a feedback about it through the below steps:
  • Go to Google Photos.
  • Click on Menu.
  • Select Send feedback.
  • Complete the questionnaire.
  • Click on Send.
The product forums will review your feedback and update the product accordingly.

If the sync is off, then the photos will not get deleted after deleting them from your Google Photos. But once you turn the sync on, they will get deleted from your device as well.

 I use the app for small tests only and to my experience you hardly can change any settings without causing that the app blocks completely and then you need to re-install the app.  
And then the new app starts to check what you have already in cloud and that can take long. 
But after that I don't expect duplicates unless you have included pc-folders with unedited originals or something alike. 

Besides: the app only syncs with Drive at https://drive.google.com/drive/computers and what is copied to Photos will not change anymore - so you may need to remove some manually.

If you have used Picasa for editing, your picturefolders contain the unedited originals and these were synced to Drive and uploaded to Photos. 
If so, you are in big troubles now, and you have to stop completely.

Hi,

I have a Pixel 3 XL running Android 11 (security update Feb 5 2021, Google Play update Jan 1 2021). I've noticed that sometimes the uploaded copies of my photos are corrupted when I view them on the https://photos.google.com/ site. The photos appear just fine when I view them on my phone.

After this happened twice today, I think I found a scenario that reproduces the problem. If I take a picture (using the default Camera app), then press the lower-right button to get me to old photos, press the upper-right "take me to my photos in the Photos App" button, select the new photo, and crop it in the Photos app -- all before the photo is finished uploading -- the uploaded version is at least partially trashed. My home Internet connection is fairly slow, so there's a fairly large window of time for this to occur. If I edit the photo from within the Camera app, this doesn't happen.

Looking back through my Google Photos album, I see about a dozen of these corrupted photos going back as far as December 1 2020.

Has anyone else seen this? Is it possible to get Photos to re-upload the uncorrupted version of the photos? And, can someone at Google please fix the underlying bug?

You can see who shared photos/videos:
  • In the "Sharing" tab you can see
    • who directly shared photos/albums with you. 
    • who is the owner of a shared album (icon above the photos)
       
  • When you save photos shared by others to your account, the info field in the web app will show "Shared by ... ". Note that, when photos are shared further, it shows the name of the person who shared, not of the original owner.
But unfortunately that information is not indexed and thus not searchable.

Nonetheless, the Google Photos app doesn't have any lock. You need a Google account and Password to use the app.

If another gallery app on your phone requires something to unlock, you need referring the help document provided by the manufacturer.

I have an original gen Pixel XL. In the Google Photos App, it says I have unlimited backup in the app. However, I now have warnings that I am at 95% of my Google storage quota, and the vast majority of this is Google Photos.
There are a small number of photos from before I had the Pixel XL but this is tiny in volume and certainly not growing.

Why are the photos and videos from my Google Pixel XL being counted against my storage quota?

I do have the option to "recover storage" which says I will get 10GB back, but I understand that the Pixel XL is supposed to have unlimited storage even at Original quality so I shouldn't have to do this.

Head over to https://one.google.com/storage/management and check for large files in Photos, or just below in Unsupported videos. 
 
All files >5MB are listed, so it will give you an idea where the space is being used.

Hello Raghu Agadi,
  1. Tap the photo and use the frames at the bottom to select the photo to keep
  2. Tap the Burst icon at the bottom
  3. Select Keep this photo only
