Question: Transferring photos between accounts with sharing feature

I have two accounts: Old account A with 200GB storage subscription New account B with 200GB storage …

I have two accounts:
  • Old account A with 200GB storage subscription
  • New account B with  200GB storage subscription
I'd like to delete my old account(A). Before that I need transfer my whole photo library (120GB photos+tens of albums) to my new account(B).

I shared it with partner sharing feature and I saved all photos in the new B account, so I can see them all there.
Then I shared all albums too and I can see all albums in the new account B.
Then I stopped partner sharing.
But, in the new account B, I can see that only 12GB is used (same amount as before sharing&saving photos).
Albums in the new B account still have the "Leave album" option.

Why only 12GB of the storage is used?
Why there is still that Leave album option?
I need to be 100% sure that I will not loose my photo library in account B when I delete old account A.

Please explain my questions and confirm that it's OK and secure to delete old account without any fatal effect to my library.
If there is some other secure or better way how to transfer my whole library together with albums, please share it with me.

I prefer to not download&upload whole library and recreate all albums, this is not convenient option for me.

Thank you
Radovan

Answer:

"I prefer to not download&upload whole library and recreate all albums, this is not convenient option for me."

It may not be the most convenient option but it is certainly the safest as it gives you a backup on a device you can do whatever you want with- including put on external HD and store in a safe deposit box... just sayin.

First: I agree with Andrew Hatchett that having your photos only in one place is never safe. Downloading all albums for sure is an option to create a backup. You can do that with Google Takeout.

But ... that does not mean that you have to upload them all again from the computer. I recommend the following workflow:
  1. Share the old library with the new account and save the photos to the new account. You already did so. Advantage over download/upload is that Descriptions or date/time changes are also transferred.

  2. Share all albums from the old to the new account. By "Joining" these albums while signed in to the new account you can see these albums in the "Sharing" tab. But these albums are not added to your account. In fact you just look at the album in the old account. That's why you can still "Leave" the album, and when you delete the old account these albums will no longer be seen in Sharing.

  3. You will have to do the following for each album:
    1.  Select all photos in the shared album
    2. Click on +  (Add to ...) > Album > New album.
All selected photos will be added to the album, and also to the Photos tab unless they are (like in your case) already added. There will be no duplicates.
Albums cannot simply be transferred, and with the method described all extra's like text, comments, order of photos gets lost. But there is no better way.

"Why only 12GB of the storage is used?"
These photos do not use storage till they are deleted from the old account or till the account is deleted.
See https://support.google.com/photos/answer/7378858 : "Any photos you save from partner sharing won't take up storage, unless your partner stops sharing their photos with you, or deletes the original copy."I
The fact that they actually do not use storage after you stopped sharing is a known bug. They may start using storage when that bug is fixed, but you have plenty of storage, thus no issue.

Question: Two (possibly) distinct issues with duplicate photos appearing

My default backup quality has been set to Original for several years now.

Issue 1:
Most edited pictures taken with my current phone, which I've had since August 2017, appear as duplicates when viewing Photos (I mostly view in the web version, but they're there in the Android app, too).
Basically, I take photos using my phone; they're saved there to the microSD card. Then I edit them at a later point in time using the Web version of Photos on my desktop computer (running Windows, but no sort of Photo backup/sync program installed on it).
At the moment, my phone has all the pics I've taken over the past ~16 months saved to it. Any photo that I've edited now appears as a duplicate...
-- identical appearance (meaning, if I've applied a filter, it's not as though I'm seeing the original image and the black-and-white version of it that I edited)
-- same dimensions
-- same timestamp and device
-- different file size (the edited photo is roughly 1.5x the size of the duplicate).
The only way I can tell which is the actual original (that I've edited) is, if I select the Edit option, one image show which filter I've applied, while the other indicates Original, implying that no filter has been applied (again, it's obvious that's not the case 99.9% of the time).
I'm not sure when this issue actually started, but I first noticed within a week or two of buying a Google Home Hub, which coincided with Black Friday this past holiday season. I note that because...

Issue 2:
I was just looking through pictures of a vacation I took about 5 years ago. These pictures were taken with a proper digital camera and which I uploaded and edited after the trip and now have saved in Photos for eternity. I have not edited them in Photos or any other program, or even so much as changed file names, etc. any time recently. But I'm wondering if the Home Hub is guilty here, too.
Unlike in Issue 1, where both the original and duplicate images had the same timestamp and therefore appeared side-by-side in the album, these are randomly interspersed (meaning that the chronological ordering technically isn't functioning properly, I suppose).
The bigger issue is that all the images have been resized from original 9MP down to 3.1MP. Again, as I'm paying for Photos to save the original image, I'm not sure why it would be saving smaller versions of the same photos.
The reason I suspect the Home Hub might be guilty here is that I noticed at least a few (but by no means all) of the 3.1MP duplicates appear in the "Family & Friends" album that was auto-created after I set up my Home Hub to scroll pictures of that nature, but their 9MP original counterpart only shows up in the original album I created nearly 5 years ago for pics of this particular trip. But then there are others where both the original and duplicate have been auto-added to the Family & Friends album.

So, all that meandering to ask two questions:
1) Is there something I might have set or a box I may have ticked somewhere that's causing duplicates of both sorts to appear?
2) Is there a way to automatically remove all duplicates without me going through and manually deleting all the images in hopes of them not instantly reappearing?

Answer:

Android:
For technical reasons unknown the app can't store the edited version over your original on the micro-sd, so it is stored as a new file in a folder in local storage. And that folder can be included in the autobackup.
If you would edit in a much more advanced app like Google Snapseed, the same will happen.

Web:
Edits in the browser are stored over the originals (which can be reverted), unless explicitely saved as copies next to the original.

Hub:
I don't have one, but I can imagine that automatic albums will contain reduced resolution pics just because of the small screen of the hub. Shared albums also may shown a much lower resolution.

That's all I can say about.
A bit disappointing perhaps after so many words :-)

Is there a way to use the desktop version of google photos to delete photos from the app AND the iphone?  I have noticed that when i delete a photo in google photos on my desktop i get a notification saying it will "Remove from Google account, synced devices, and shares within Google Photos?".  I do notice that it will delete this photo off the app as well, but it does not delete from my iphone photos.  I'm trying to delete the iphone photo along with the google photo. is there a way to make this work? I like the navigation on the desktop better than using the app to do this.

Answer:

I do think that iOS is the cause, because on my Android I can delete local pictures on my phone from https://photos.google.com
In the Apple Photos app, you may have switched-on automatic storing of recently deleted pictures.
So you may need to switch-off that safety precaution.
At your own risc.
But pictures deleted in this way also are kept for 60 days in the trash of the Google app.
Good luck

Answer:

Hi Kitty,

Albums are sorted by the dates of the photos, regardless of who adds them. If you would like to see this feature added, I'd recommend sending the team feedback.

I would recommend sending the team feedback so they are aware this is something you would like to see. To send feedback:
  1. At the top left, open the Menu , then select Send feedback.
  2. You can tell them things like:
  • What you like or dislike about the app
  • Things that are confusing or don't work

Question: If I delete pics and video from google photos , will I get some of my storage(15GB) back ?

Just asking before I take any wrong steps

Hello, Vyom Mengar

Welcome to the Google Photos Community Support Forum & thanks for your query.

If you have chosen the backup format as high-quality, your action of deleting the photos will be redundant as currently, these photos do not occupy any space.

However, if you have chosen "Original Quality" for backing up, then you can recover some space by deleting the pics in Google Photos.

However, please note the following caveats.
  • Deleting pics in Google Photos will remove the synced content on your phone also.
  • Further, the deleted photo will sit in the trash & continue to occupy space. You need emptying the trash also.

To get better direction on how to recover the space, please follow these steps.
Please visit the link https://one.google.com/storage/managent
There, you will also find some tips on how to retrieve some of the storage space.

However, this link will show only the quantum of original Quality photos & offer an option to delete those.
If you wish converting these to high-quality, please visit the link https://photos.google.com/settings

That page will offer two options a) Purchase additional storage or b) Recover storage.
The second option will offer to convert all original quality content to high-quality
Tap/click on that & then all the pictures in original quality will be converted to high-quality.
Through that, you can recover a significant amount of space.

My photos & videos sync to my tablets and are using up too much space. Don't know how to stop this. Don't need the duplication on all devices. Grateful for help!

Answer:

I assume that the app on your phone syncs with Google and that you are using your tablets for viewing merely.
They don't sync to your tablets - they are shown in the Google-app but not downloaded to your Gallery.
But the app itself uses more space for householding and if your tablets are old, they may have too less local memory and then you get into troubles with updating other important apps.
In fact there is no other solution for that problem then removing your account from the Google app and then  restart the tablets. Then you must view photos.google.com in its Chromebrowser.

I have started syncing my photo library with Google photos. It appears that one or two photos may have bad EXIF data, with the date of the photo set to the year 1969 (I assume) because my timeline now goes all the way back to 1969. When I try to scroll down to the end of my timeline to this date, the app crashes and exits.

How can I resolve this?

Answer:

Hi Leo,

Thanks for posting in the Google Photos Help Forum.

I do understand the inconvenience as your Google Photos gets crashed while using it. Therefore, I recommend trying the steps below in sequence, this may help in fixing the issue:
  • Make sure your device is up-to-date.
  • Make sure the App is up-to-date.
  • Try restarting the App through the following steps:
    • Go to your App Settings.
    • Click stop on the afflicted App with the Force Stop button.
    • Wait a few seconds to make sure the App has stopped processing, and then attempt to re-start it.
  • Close the background running apps through the following steps:
    • Go to your App Settings.
    • Display the Active Apps on your device.
    • Select the App you wish to close and Force Stop it.
    • Repeat this step with all active Apps.
  • Try clearing your App cache through the following steps:
    • Tap the system Settings tab on the main screen of your device.
    • Tap the General section of settings that is on the far right.
    • Tap Storage in the General tab.
    • Clear the cache data once storage calculates the data.
    • Back out of the storage section.
    • Tap Applications and find the application in question.
    • Tap the application and clear the cache (if available).
    • Clear the data for the application if there is no cache to clear.
    • Exit the settings screen and restart the device.
Let me know if this helps.

Best,
Emma

Answer:

Hi - Thanks for the suggestions.

I checked and there are no updates for my phone, and I appear to have the latest version of Photos.

Force-quitting and restarting didn't make any difference.
Clearing the cache didn't make any difference either, however...

After clearing the cache, the layout of the app seemed to change to display small icons.
(I didn't know that the app had the feature that could display small or large thumbnails).

In the 'small thumbnail' mode, the problem goes away. It comes back when in large thumbnail mode.

Also I've noticed if I scroll down slowly to the end of my timeline, the problem doesn't occur.
It only seems to crash when I scroll all the way down quickly.

In my opinion it's a bug, perhaps some kind of layout issue.
How do I raise this as a defect?

Incidentally, I've identified the photos with the bad timestamp, and I've updated the timestamp on my desktop. But the photos still appear with the old timestamp on my phone. Will this eventually sync up again?

Thanks -

Leo

Answer:

Hi Leo,

If backup is switched-off, nothing is uploaded to Google.
You can check that on photos.google.com when you log-in with your Google-account.
And if you are not logged-in to the app right-up, the app always only shows what you have on phone like any Gallery-app (that are no copies).
But then it becomes your own responsibility to backup your pictures yourself somewhere.

Question: Getting Drive Backup "Computers" folder into Google Photos

I am still confused about the recent changes to syncing functionality between Photos and Drive. For a long time, I have been backing up my iPhoto (yes, legacy iPhoto) "Masters" folder to Google Drive via Sync from a Macbook Air. These land in a top level folder of my Google Drive called "Computers" and have never shown up in Google Photos. I also backup photos from my Android phones to Google Photos, and they show up there. I would like Google Photos to index all my pictures, both the ones synced/backed up to "Computers" and the Android phone pix.

I see the new option to "upload" photos from Google Drive to Google Photos. But I don't see anything from the folder of my Google Drive called "Computers\

Hi Wiley Sanders,

which settings do you have in Backup and Sync, if possible please upload a screenshot similar to below to compare <screenshot visible online>

Answer:

Put simply, anything you add to your iPhoto library which is compatible with Google Photos should be uploaded to Google Photos IF the option to Upload newly added photos was enabled when you first selected the iPhoto Library.

You should be able to see photos under the folder tree at https://drive.google.com/drive/computers  and these should all be in Google Photos

If there is still doubt, could you create a folder outside the library with one or two photos in it and use the CHOOSE FOLDER command to select that folder.

Answer:

Basically, that's right such as PeteranDi told. However, If you used to have the option " Upload newly added photos・・・" disable, the photos uploaded in disable period have never shown up in Google Photos. That case, there are 2 ways to solve, one is sure, but another is not verified by myself.

1) not verified
Once disconnect the folder to sync, then close the dialog box of Backup and Sync to update a sync configuration oneself. After that, have the option " Upload newly added photos・・・" enable, then connect a folder to sync.
Hopefully only the photos not shown in Google Photos will be uploaded to Google Photos. The photos already shown up there will never be uploaded in duplicate.
However, I worry about the sync for Google Photos not work well because Backup and Sync consider the sync was completed on Google Drive side due to the all of the photos already exist in "Computers" on the web.

If you have a photo which you previously synced with the "Computer" section of Google Drive but didn't upload to Google Photos, and want to upload it to Google Photos too, you need to un-sync the "Computer" section and delete the folder on the cloud and then sync again.
Because Backup & Sync does not have the function to upload photos directly to Google Photos, it will process on the cloud side that the photos uploaded to the "Computer" section show also on Google Photos, but photos already existing in the "Computer" section are considered synced and will not be processed to show on Google Photos.

2) Add to My Drive
User can make a content in the "Computers" add to "My Drive". You can see the folder specified to sync under the Computers/My MacBook" folder.
So, make a subfolder directly under the folder specified to sync, then move the all of the photos or folder to the subfolder. Then right-click on the subfolder and select "Add to My Drive" in the menu.
By this work, you can have 2 of access routes for the subfolder, "Computers" and "My Drive".
