Here are some of the possible reasons why you are seeing photos you may not recognize:

Your Google account shares storage with other products such as Blogger, Google Drive, or Hangouts. It is possible that you uploaded images to one of the other Google products which is now being displayed in Google Photos.
You accepted someone’s invite to share their photo library.
You uploaded someone’s files to your Google Drive storage.
You left your account signed in on another device.
You sold a device without resetting it to factory defaults.
You received the images via a messaging application such as Hangouts, WhatsApp, etc.
You configured the Google Backup & Sync software on a computer to upload the photos from a system folder such as the cache of a web browser.
You set up a third party service (e.g. IFTTT) to automatically upload photos to your account.
You have in your mobile device’s microSD slot a card you aren’t aware of or don’t remember inserting.

You should first review your account security, check for any unknown devices, and change your Google password, possibly enabling 2-step verification. If you've looked into these explanations and still aren't sure why you're seeing these photos, please let us know.

Could you please elaborate the issue or your query for me to assist you better? Are you referring to backing upyour photos/videos from your Android device to Google Photos? If yes, to Backup your photos/video, before youstart, make sure you're signed in.

On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Photos app .
Sign in to your Google Account.
At the top, tap Menu .
Select Settings Back up & sync.
Tap "Back up & sync" on or off.

Things to keep in mind about this setting:

Changing backup settings will affect all apps that use Back up & sync, such as Google Drive.
If you have Back up & sync on, deleting the Google Photos app from your device will not turn it off. To turn off Back up & sync, follow the instructions above.

I have already sent an email to the helpdesk as well so all i can do is wait.

Hopefully everything will be fine as i have already paid for the album considering that google is trustworthy...

Im trying to back up and sync all photos and videos to google drive. My Samsung has 22gb of files but after syncing Google photos is only showing 8gb.

I've gone to utilities and checked whatsapp etc are backing up, I've clicked on the original file size toggle but still is much less.

My samsung is set up to save motion photos so perhaps that is it but any thoughts would be great.

If it is the latter can I transfer motion photos without saving them as videos?

When you save pics in the storage saver quality, Google compresses that to save the space.

The help desk article says

Photos are compressed to save space. If a photo is larger than 16 MP, it will be resized to 16 MP.

That reflects in the total space occupied on Google Drive.

Were the photos also in Google Photos? If only in Google Drive, I recommend that you contact the Google Drive support team to see if any deleted files may be recovered. Just fill the Google Drive contact form https://support.google.com/googleone/gethelp and tell them you permanently deleted files you would like to recover.

Sorry for your loss.

You could try uploading the image to Google Photos and look at the Info Panel (on the web it is an "i" inside of a circle on a specific image - I don't have an up-to-date Android app to check there).

You could also try an ~EXIF Viewer~ but if it doesn't show in the Google Photos Info Panel I doubt if an EXIF viewer will work.

Don't delete the original message which was sent to you. If you are being harassed, MAYBE your local law enforcement could get the IP address of the sender traced and talk to them.

Google Photos never uploads the same picture multiple times.
What we see as duplicates have some difference in file format or metadata.

Regrettably, Google Photos doesn't provide any means to remove the apparent duplicates. You have to search those manually.

New behavior in version 5.47 just discovered also and not announced or explained as usual.

The former situation was not okay because also the local original got edited without any need and that was very timeconsuming in addition.

That does not happen anymore, but now a copy is saved locally and backupped also. So you need to decide about the original: deleting or archiving.

It is hard to find-out if these additional copies take additonal space - I don't think so as long as the original is not deleted.

Please use the feedback option in the app under your profile to protest against this additonal complication.

If the item is not in your trash, it may be permanently deleted and cannot be recovered.

When I try to send photos via the photos app conversation on my mobile to users on a Chromebook they don't consistently recieve my photos or messages. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. The devices are one the same network and have no issues with internet access that I can see.

How to figure out where the issue is?

It's really annoying because I have to resort to sending photos by mail instead.

Depends on the Chromebook: if it is a classic one with the Chrome-browser only or is one who can handle Android apps like Google Photos. In the latter case I don't expact problems because the user is notified clearly, but in the browser only version, there are no notifications at all and the user only may see a red dot on the sharing-page in the browser when they have opened photos.google.com

Else I would not not know any technical reason.

No Google here and just a very few Chromebook-users.

PS: don't forget to press the Enter-key after typing a message - else it is not send :-)
