If you deleted an item and want it back, check your trash to see if it’s there.
  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Photos app .
  2. At the top left, tap Menu   Trash .
  3. Touch and hold the photo or video you want to restore.
  4. At the bottom, tap Restore. The photo or video will be back:
    • In your phone’s gallery app
    • In your Google Photos library
    • In any albums it was in
If the item is not in your trash, it may be permanently deleted.
Don't see the photo or video?
If a deleted photo or video isn't in trash, you can’t restore it. You won't be able to restore a photo if:
  • You moved it to trash more than 60 days ago.
  • You moved it to trash, then emptied your trash.
  • You permanently deleted it from your trash.
  • You permanently deleted it from your device’s Gallery app, without backing it up first.
To find and recover photos easily, turn on back up & sync.
 
You may also try to get professional help, but sorry to say Google cannot do anything about it.

It is a very serious mistake that children are able to play around with your phone, because a factory reset deletes all locally stored files.  

If these pictures can not be viewed on photos.google.com in the Chrome-browser on phone or computer when you log-in with your own Google-account and are not in thrash there also, it is hopeless because then they never have been safely backupped due to wrong settings.  

But if they are still there, you are lucky and then you only need to log-in in the Google Photos app to see them there also - that may take a while.

Correct, but again: there is nothing we can do. In some (but not all) accounts it is possible to add or correct tags manually. On all accounts you can:
  • Remove wrong results (select photos > 3-dots > Remove results)
  • Merge 2 groups created for the same person: give both groups the exact same name, and you should be asked whether it is the same person. When you confirm both groups will be merged.

When I select the faces of the people I want, google only populates photos in that live album from the albums that have originated from me in my account. It does not pick photos of an individual from albums shared with me. Is there any way to create a comprehensive live album that picks photos both from all the albums that have originated from my account and those that have been shared with me?

I can pick an entire shared album and select it so that the Google Home photo frame will show (all) photos from it. But I haven't found a way to just pick and show select people's photos from an album shared with me.

I do not know of such feature. 
You can "save" the photos shared with you to your account, or add them to an album so that you become the owner of the copy, and Google will scan it for faces. Unfortunately that will no longer be free as from tomorrow June 1st. The photos you save to your account will count for storage.

We freed up space 10 GB worth but an hour later it was up to 15 GB again. The thing is they chose the setting " high quality" with unlimited photo storage space. Now if I look at their Google drive and compare it with mine I see for mine it says the photos indeed take 0bytes but in their case each photo just takes up its original size. I've noticed that some of the duplicates are visually slightly different, like the contrast has been Auto Adjusted. Also, some of the duplicates have wildly different timestamps. Is this an issue with BackUp & Sync? How can I stop this from occurring?

I tried changing my iPhone's camera format to Most Compatible over High Efficiency. I read online this could be responsible, but I've already seen a duplicate appear from a test photo I took after changing it, so that eliminates that possibility. Please help!

I'm not sure I can help, but will try. 
 
In my experience, Google Photos does not create extra copies of photos, and I assume you do not have any connection between your laptop and Google Photos on the web.
 
You are editing on a laptop, is it possible you are saving the edited photo and it is downloading to the iPhone via iCloud and backing up as a new copy?  With this scenario you would see the copies in the Camera roll.

You can add a person through the following steps.
 
Tap to open the photo which contains unidentified faces & then slide up or tap the three dots.
If the app had failed to include some faces in that picture, then you will see a prompt "XX faces available to add"
 
Tap the edit icon at the extreme right edge.
 
That will show identified faces in square boxes & their thumbnails at the bottom.
Tap on the + sign on each thumbnail. 
Then the app will show you all the identified faces till that time.
You can select the right one.
 
If not, tap the + sign at the top right corner of the screen.
That would create a new grouping altogether.
 
Once created, the app may take some time to bring all the related pictures to this new grouping.
Otherwise, you can go through the collection & add the photos to the newly created group, manually, through the same steps as described above.

Never heard before, but in the Google information about partner sharing they speak about photos only and it is strange that they don't speak about photos & videos. 
So my guess is that they automatically are excluded for technical reasons not communicated - assuming that you are talking about videos shooted with his own camera or phone. 
Nevertheless: in the sharing with my wife, incidently a short video is included without problems. 
So unclear situation and I will try to find more information.

It may not be possible to undo the "Free up space" action now.
 
Nevertheless, you can download the content to your phone through these steps.
 
To bring back the pics to your phone's gallery, either, you can download photos one by one. Regrettably, there is no option to do so on a batch of photos.
 
Alternatively, you can install the Google One app there is a one time option to restore up to two hundred most recent photos to the device.
However, the local folder structure can not be restored.
To do so, there is no requirement to join Google One, the option is available to everyone.
However, the method may not be effective to recover something when the count is more than two hundred.
 
Or, you can arrange for a bulk download by visiting the link https://takeout.google.com/;
Select the Google Photos app for data download.
Once the file is ready, you will get an email. Access that & unzip all the attachments into your phone's gallery.
 
That will bring everything to your phone.

Could you please elaborate the issue or your query for me to assist you better? Are you referring to restoring your deleted videos? If yes, please know that photos/videos deleted from the Google Photos library, goes to the Trash for the next 60 days. So, in case, you deleted it by mistake you can always restore it from Trash folder within those 60 days (post deletion). But, if you don't find it in Trash, probably it must have been deleted more that 60 days ago. Unfortunately, restoring your lost/deleted photos and videos from Trash is the last resort.
