When I download photos from Google Photos, it downloads in a file extension not compatible to upload on YouTube Community & on any Google Products! It is downloading in an HEIC file extension!  I have tried tapping & holding on my touch screen, to see if I can get a dialogue box to pop up so I can change the file extension but nothing happens!  The visible pictures are screensnots the HEIC with a rectangle, SD card FLAGGED corner storage, is download picture from Google Photos!  How about making it compatible to upload across all platforms?

I have written on the Google Chromebook forum as well, but I am open to other help forums that may play a role in this issue!  Maybe Android too?  My computer is an HP, but I have already determined that the HP encasing will not work without software, & the Android OS will not working without the HP case to put it in. The way I would describe the software is looking at a human brain, which we can't see human OS!

The Heic format comes from modern iPhones and apparently Google Photos did not convert that into compressed JPG what I would have expected. 

But heics can't be shown in the simple fileviewer of Chromebooks and I looked in the Chromestore if there is any convertor-app available and I found this one: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/heic-image-viewer-decoder

It's a difficult one this. 99% of users would be angry that Google was messing with their photos. So the standard must be 'what goes up should download' unless there is a method of the user deciding the download format.

 

The fact that Apple decided to use a proprietary standard should make Google design Google Photos to introduce a conversion to their standard compression jpg?  Doesn't really matter what I think, past experience says 'I think not'

 

I would suggest the onus is on the originator to output compatible formats, there is a compatibility option in the iOS settings.

 

But that's all opinion, the only way to reach out to Google is to leave Feedback so the developers can prioritise any feature enhancements based on the number of users requesting them. We don't have a process for doing so in the Community.

 

One workaround is to edit the HEIC online, make a fractional change of one parameter after which you get the 3 dot option to Save a copy.  This copy is still labelled HEIC but if you download it downloads a jpg

 

Sorry there is no easy fix, you could possibly batch output jpg with Irfanview but don't know if that is  available on a Chromebook

This is just one example out of many - if some Raw-fan would have shared an album with originals, most downloaders can do nothing with such files and certainly not on a basic Chromebook.  

Google Photos is compatible with an awfull range of video-formats: .mpg, .mod, .mmv, .tod, .wmv, .asf, .avi, .divx, .mov, .m4v, .3gp, .3g2, .mp4, .m2t, .m2ts, .mts, and .mkv

But downloaded, many of them will not play in a standard Windows viewer and certainly not on a basic Chromebook. But even having a Chromebook, it is impossible to test all possible file-variations. 

Etc. etc. 

Companies  just have too much freedom in this world to deviate from simple standards for everyone and Apple is one of them - just because they hate Microsoft :-)

PS: I assume that if heics are uploaded in High Quality setting of the Photos-app, that they were converted into jpg files also - like in your save-as-a-copy example.

There is no compression for HQ uploaded HEIC 

 

One example is HEIC 2.4MB with the slight edit and save JPG at 3.6MB so I am guessing they decided to leave alone.

It is the other way around: generally what get's uploaded can be downloaded in the same fileformat, but often not the same filesize. But there always are exceptions :-)

Youtube does not accept the heic filetype used on your iPhone, so you need to convert it to standard jpeg with software available (or installed) on your computer for general applications. And that also can be attaching pictures to a mailmessage to a good friend to prevent that he or she can't view them. 

Converting into extreme png of tif files makes no sense and would not be accepted by Youtube either.

Backup and Sync is a Drive product, the upgrade lacks any guidelines to help users. Especially if you have a Google Photos folder, and select all files instead of just photos and videos. please take a look at this doc:> GPB to BUS which I hope will help you set the best preferences and understand what is happening,

Incase, if you're referring to recover your photos deleted permanently from trash, unfortunately, there isn't any way to recover them.

 

However, still try checking the missing photos on Google Photos library. Incase, if you might have moved the photos to trash, it will not automatically removed from:

• Blogger
  
• YouTube
  
• Gmail
  
• Google+

If you don't find the photos, I'd recommend you look for your photos here, signing in with all your Google accounts if you have more than one:

• get.google.com/albumarchive
  
• drive.google.com (under Google Photos)
  
• other online photo or file storage services you use (e.g. Dropbox, OneDrive, iCloud).

I'd also recommend you contact the Google Drive support team as they can restore photos up to 21 days after deletion if the photos are available in the Google Drive. You can click the "Missing or deleted files" entry of the contact form and request a phone call or any other option that works for you.

To bring the pics to your tablet, you can download photos one by one.

Regrettably, there is no option to download the photos in bulk.

 

Or, you can arrange for a bulk download by visiting the link https://takeout.google.com/.

Select the Google Photos app for data download.

Once the file is ready, you will get an email. Access that & unzip all the attachments into your tablet's gallery. However, you have to ensure your phone has free space more than the size of the downloaded zip file.
