I'm sorry to hear you're having issues.

I'd recommend checking the following:

1. Do you have enough storage on your phone? You may be running out of space which is causing the app to crash
2. Check your app is up to date - Visit the app store and make sure you don't have any updates for Google Photos
3. Find an app on the app store that can clear the cache on your phone
4. Uninstalling the app and re-installing it. I know it's a pain, but it sounds like it's getting stuck somewhere along the line.

No, you shouldn't lose the photos. They should be backed up to Google Photos.

I tried deleting some heavy videos and pictures because it showed that it was over the limit of memory and so I did and still nothing. 
Then I saw on this forum to clear the Cache data and it completely deleted whole folders of pictures off my phone. (That got me really upset.)

However, the app will not bring those to your new phone automatically.

 

Some phone manufacturers offer utilities to transfer media from the old phone to the new one. Can you look for that?

 

Els, you can download photos one by one.

Regrettably, there is no option to download the photos in bulk.

 

Or, you can arrange for a bulk download by visiting the link https://takeout.google.com/.

Select the Google Photos app for data download.

Once the file is ready, you will get an email. Access that & unzip all the attachments into your phone's gallery. However, you have to ensure your phone has free space more than the size of the downloaded zip file.

 

That will bring everything to your new phone.
