I used to synch my pictures in the Google Photos App but since my storage is full and I stopped using the synch function most of my old pictures, that used to be on my device are not visible in the Photos app anymore. However when I open Google Photos in my Browser the pictures are still there in the cloud. How can I download the pictures back to my phone? (I cannot use the standard download function in Google Photos because they are simply not visible on my device anymore)

My problem is regarding the Google Photos App. I am using the free version (15GB) on my Google Pixel 5. When I switched to my Google Pixel 5 from my old Samsung device I copied all my old pictures to the "camera" library in the Google Photos app. In the beginning I used the synch function, but when my free storage contingent was full, I turned off synching. Now I have almost all of my old pictures in Google Photos visible when I open Photos in the Browser. However on the app on my phone the pictures are gone. My question is how can I get the pictures back to my phone? They do not appear at all in the Google Photos app anymore.

You could check your usage vs quota at:

https://drive.google.com/settings/storage

Check that your version of Google Photos is about: 3.21.198466600 (via 3 line menu > Setting = Gear / Cogwheel at top right > "About Google Photos").

Check the account being used on the 3 line menu and in settings.

If you don't have "Use cellular data to back up photos" turned on, make sure you are connecting to Wi-Fi. If you are relying on cellular data to upload, check you iOS settings for that.

On Android devices, we would typically recommend clearing the cache and deleting temporary data, unfortunately on iOS the only thing that you can do is uninstall and reinstall the app. Although there should not be any problem I would recommend doing a manual photo backup (e.g., to a computer) if you decide to do this.

If you are using both iCloud Photo Library and Google Photos at the same time (not recommended) do some more research before doing anything.

Before you do,

What does you, at the top right of "Photos" (underneath the 3 dots) what does it say? ~Preparing backup~?

Is your phone low on storage space?

Are you experiencing issues with any other app?

It makes me nervous, too. Though it shouldn't but I would rather be safe than sorry.

It will be much better to combine the two, and more intuitive to use the Gmail account. As I said, hopefully it has a name that you can live with longterm (because you might end up sharing from it). BTW, this will be an important account for you so make sure that it has a decent password and that you have recovery email and phone set up on it.

There are several ways to do transfer data from one account to another, Shared Libraries (a.k.a. Partner Sharing) is probably easiest and cleanest. Normally, this would be used between two different people (spouses, for instance).

Here's a help article for more information on 'Share your Google Photos library with a partner'. In your case you will be your own partner in a different account. Set-up is pretty easy and you can do it from your phone or a computer. If you have 10s of thousands of photos the transfer process might take a few days to complete.

Do some reasonableness tests on the number of images in both accounts before and after. You can do this by selecting all the images in "Photos" or looking that the count of Photos for "Photos" here https://myaccount.google.com/dashboard(the Album count is meaningless). The number of photos your Gmail account should increase by approximately the number of images in your Hotmail account (minus any images which somehow got into both).

Make sure that you set "Save to library" for all images on the target account.

Note: Shared Libraries transfer the images not the albums, you can share and recreate the albums if you desire.

Don't delete the images in the old account for a week after you thing the transfer is done. Check the resolution on some sample videos (via the Information Panel "i" icon) before the deleting the old photos. If you have any images which you would be heartbroken if you lost, make sure that you store them in more than one format / tool.

After the transfer is done, you can turn off Partner Sharing. From then on use your Gmail account for photos. Note: It is easy to have multiple email accounts in most email apps, you will want to check your Gmail email once in a while in case you get notifications (you could also auto-forward it to your primary email account, if desired).
