Question: I have deleted my photo by mistake and I want to record it

I have delete my photos & videos by mistake I want to record it

For Computer.

If you want to get a deleted item back, check your bin to find out if you can get it back. If your photo or video has already been backed up and you deleted it, it will remain in your bin for 60 days.
  1. On your computer, go to photos.google.com.
  2. At the left, click Bin .
  3. Place your cursor over the photo or video that you want to restore, then click Select .
  4. At the top right, click Restore  Restore. That photo or video will be restored to your Google Photos account and added back into any albums that it was in.
For Android.

If you deleted an item and want it back, check your bin to see if it’s there.
  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Photos app .
  2. At the bottom, tap Library  Bin .
  3. Touch and hold the photo or video that you want to restore.
  4. At the bottom, tap Restore. The photo or video will be back:
    • In your phone’s gallery app
    • In your Google Photos library
    • In any albums that it was in
If the item is not in your bin, it may be permanently deleted.

Permanently deleted video/photos can no longer be recovered on Google Photos.

But there is a third party app that you may try to use to recover your permanently deleted photos/videos.

You may download the File Recovery from the Google Play Store(Android Device only).

That app can recover permanently deleted files(photos/videos). I'm also using it.

Note: this app must be use with the device where the files was deleted.

Question: Can i delete photos and videos on my ultra note s20 but have them stored in google photos

Hello David,

Free up space is designed to remove any photos that have been safely backed up to Google Photos from your phone. You will still be able to view them any time in Google photos, it just means that you won't have a copy stored on in your phone physically.

To Free up space on your Android device:
  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Photos app .
  2. Sign in to your Google Account.
  3. Tap Menu   Free up space
  4. You’ll see how many items will be removed. To delete all the items from your phone, tap Free up.
  5. To see your photos and videos, go to photos.google.com or open the Google Photos app .
However, if you are looking to delete only a handful of images:

Delete selected device copy photos from the device in the photos menu
  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Photos app .
  2. Select one or more photos that are on the device.
  3. At the top right, tap on the "3 dots" menu icon.
  4. Select Delete Device Copy.

Answer:

HI Bradley,

The recommended answer does not work for me because the "Delete device copy" is not available in the "3-dots" menu.

On my Pixel 3a, fully up to date:

1. In the Android Google Photos app, I select a picture by clicking on the circle at top left.
2. I click on the "3 dots" menu:  there is no "Delete Device Copy"; the only menu items are:
  • Move to Archive
  • Move to Locked Folder
See the attached screenshot.

3. If I select the trash icon the app warns me that the photo will be deleted on both my Pixel and in Google Photos backup.  I do not want to do this.

So,
  • How do I make the "Delete Device Copy" button show in  the "3 dots" menu?
  • Is there another way to achieve the same objective -- delete selected pictures from my Pixel but not from Google Photos backup?
Thanks.

Your Google cloud storage space is independent of your cellular provider. Google gives you 15GB of free storage. If you change providers, your google storage of photos will not change.

I have 15gb capacity which is now at 13gb and have been told I can buy more storage -google/ Gmail.  It also says free up 12gb by clicking here 🤷 lol but I don't know if I'll lose anything or what.   Further down it says all photos etc are backed up and safe.  If they're backed up, what's the issue with storage?  What is actually full or almost full?

Answer:

You should discern with unpayed free space in your account and working space on your phone which also can have become tiny and then your phone may stop working completely when shooting a video.
And because it is more easy to pay for more space in your account then to get more space on phone, you are invited by Google to free-up that space to prevent problems.
And if you want to go on with storing at Google (and using Gmail), you need to subscribe for Google One and pay for shifting your limit to 100 GB or 200 GB if you often shoot videos.

Question: Google Photos is broken after using sync with Apple Photos library

After using Backup & Sync to sync my entire Apple Photos library the web interface no longer wants to display my photo's. It shows (lots of) empty grey tiles. After a few hours of waiting this doesn't change. Albums that were there before the sync still display. The timeline on the right side seems to display the right dates. My library is approx. 40K photos. Is that too much for Google? I gave it a few weeks, hoping that some server side stuff would clean it up, but it's still broken. My other devices don't show the photo's either. Any thoughts?

Answer:

The Apple Photo Library is an ugly construction with a lot of metadata not relevant for Google Photos.
So hopefully you did switch-off the Metadata under Change in the Preferences window of Backup & Sync, but I am afraid not and that may explain the grey squares. Can't show a screenshot of that setting now.
Please come back to tell, but others may tell you if Google can be cleaned-up anymore.
Sorry - Google is bad in warning on-line.

PS: also look on Drive in the Computertab if you see any normal pictures in normal folders instead of random garbage.

Answer:

thanks for your help. I had the Metadata switched on briefly until I found online that that's an evil checkbox not to be used...

Answer:

Even in the short time that ugly option was on, many small datafiles could get uploaded, but I don't understand why you see grey tiles then instead of small facethumbnails.
What do you see at https://get.google.com/albumarchive under the Autobackup cover: and endless amount of empty dayfolders also?
And the albums you are spoken about were they created by Picasa before March 2018 perhaps, because at that date Google has broken the connection between Picasa and Google Photos.
If so, you better can forget about Backup & Sync completely and just upload the contents of later folder straight into https://photos.google.com becayuse then you also can create newer albums and that is not possible with B&S directly.

Answer:

Interesting! Looks like my photo's are actually all there, although many of them are thumbnail versions. Also even the larger images have filenames like UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_8d52.jpg, but I'm not too bothered about that.

I think only one or two if those albums that are created were created in the days of Picasa. It's too bad the folder structure in Apple Photos isn't used (if the backup & sync was working at all).

Answer:

Your folders only can be seen on Drive - on Photos you only see their contents (if it are normal files) and you must create albums there yourself - eg for sharing or just for viewing via Chromecast.

You can't delete rubbish from Drive because then you also will delete that from your computer and there that "rubbish" may be important for the functioning of iPhoto or Apple Photos.
But Photos is completely independant, so can start deleting your grey tiles in large selections up to about 500: select the first one, then scroll down, press and hold Shift and then select the last one etc. Thereafter you can empty the trash at https://photos.google.com/trash

Apparently you also have many RAW-files and they can be an additional pain if not compatible with Photos -see the long list of camera's on this link
If compatible and your uploadsetting is on High Quality, they will get converted into much smaller jpg-files by Google, but still with the original pixelsize unless higher then 16 MP - then they are downsized to 16 MP also. So if you look to the infopanel, you may see 16 MP files which take 2 MB only instead of 16 MB.
If not compatible, they will stick on Drive only and take a lot of storage there.

Don't know what I can advice more - your situation is completely unclear to me.

Answer:

Can't see the photo's on Drive (maybe I'm misunderstanding where, but not Drive online). Can't create albums because I can't select photos. The photos I have in RAW are taken directly on the iPhone X so those should be covered as DNG files I suppose.

I normally use Lightroom for all my Canon 5D II RAW photos and exported them to Apple Photos as JPG so I could have all my photos with me on my iPhone incl. a hierarchal album structure (the lack of that I find to be a downside of Google Photos). The main reason for wanting to have another copy on Google was for displaying them on the Google Home Hub that I just bought. Rather disappointing and surprising that I managed to break an online Google service.

thanks again for trying to help though!

Answer:

I do mean Google Drive online at https://drive.google.com/drive/computers
If there are no normal (recognisable) folders with normal jpg-files, these pictures will not be on https://photos.google.com - perhaps just because you have stopped syncing.

The Homehub needs albums and you can try to create one testalbum with about 100 recent pictures in the Google app on your phone: just select a bunch, hit + select New album and name it. Then it should be selectable in the Home Hub after a day or so - maybe almost immediately.

Not clear if you can select and delete a bunch of grey tiles on https://photos.google.com

Not clear if your Xphone DNG's are accepted by Google Photos because of to large deviation from Adobe standards. And were they uploaded directly to Google on your phone or processed via Lightroom also.

Answer:

Ah, I didn't realise it would be a folder under My Macbook Pro. So B&S is making an exact copy of the contents. Very interesting. This is actually very useful because at least now I have the option to remove everything and sync in an alternative way. I thought there would be no way to remove all the images. Thanks a lot, this did help!

Answer:

I am not on Apple, but I assume that the good stuff is the Masters-folder and the rest has no value for Google Photos.
But they have no meaning for your Home Hub - it just is your Apple Photos backup in Google cloud.

Answer:

Workaround thumbnail images, metadata junk photos from apple photo library.

Tested on mac os mojave

You cannot move Masters out of the library using symlinks, BUT you can have symlinks INSIDE the .photolibrary?

What's the idea? We will have .photolibrary INSIDE .photolibrary

The folder structure

main.photolibrary
---Masters SYMLINKS to the child.photolibrary Masters folder
---resources
---child.photolibrary
------Masters

go to main.photolibrary and open terminal
cd main.photolibrary

rm child.photolibrary/Masters
mv main.photolibrary child.photolibrary/Masters
ln -s child.photolibrary/Masters Masters

If you have "broken photo library" - go to Activity monitor and kill processes "photolibrary" and other photo*.

Please be careful and always have backup files.

DONE. Enjoy!

Suppose I am the owner of a shared album.
I added 100 photos to the album.
My friend adds 150 photos to the album.

I know the 100 photos (added by me) should count in my space, and not in my friend's space.
But does the 150 photos (added by my friend) count in my space, or my friend's space?

Answer:

Is there a way that I can delete all photos that were added by me in the shared album (100 photos considering the above example) completely from my google photos account in one shot (thus making that album taking 0% size in my space)?

There are many photos, I will not be able to select manually.

Not just remove it from the album, delete it completely.

Answer:

Let us restrict to your album and the 100 added by you.
You always can remove photos from albums, but that will make no difference for your account-space. Then you really to trash them, because then they will get removed from your mainstream too.
If these 100 are not together at the end of the album, it will be a tuff job to select them indeed.
But that can't be prevented unless you mark these hundred with a star, because then they can be found at Favorites and selected there for deletion.

Thanks, as I said above though the pictures were wiped completely off both physical devices and were not in the bin or archive folder. Question: How do you retrive pictures backup on your phone

How do you retrive backed up photos

Hello,

If you have back up & sync on, photos and videos you delete will stay in your trash for 60 days.
  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Photos app .
  2. At the top left, tap Menu   Trash .
  3. Touch and hold the photo or video you want to recover.
  4. At the bottom, tap Restore. The photo or video will be back:
    • In your phone
    • Into the "Photos" section of the app.
    • Into any albums it was in.
If you have deleted the photos from the Trash, then I'm sorry but you can't retrieve them. This is why you receive a warning when you delete from the Trash. Deleting from the Trash is permanent.

But there is a third party app that you may try to use to recover your permanently deleted photos/videos.

You may download the File Recovery from the Google Play Store(Android Device only).

That app can recover permanently deleted files(photos/videos). I'm also using it.

Hi, my photos are taking up storage space on Google Drive even though I have chosen "high quality". I am windows 10 and using the backup and sync utilty on my desktop computer

Answer:

The back and sync utility is not working properly. In google drive I can see the storage and space taken up by my photos, and it is taking up space even though I have chosen "high quality"

Answer:

Hi, please take a look at this doc:>GPB to BUS especially the video referred to in para 4 to see if the settings are consistent and there is no clash with a My Drive Google Photos folder, Regards, Peter

Answer:

I had the same problem.  I tried uninstalling from the desktop, deleting all the files that were taking up space, but the files reappeared as soon as I re-installed.  Here's what fixed it for me:
  • Uninstall Backup and Sync.
  • Go to your Drive folder on the web and under Computers, select your PC.  Right click and select Remove.
  • Wait 24 hours (yes really!)
  • Check that all the files that were taking up space have gone from the cloud.
  • Reinstall Backup and Sync, making sure that "High Quality" is selected.  Unfortunately, this will mean that you have to re-sync every photo again.

I suspect that Drive holds an invisible cache of files and even after you remove your PC from the account, it holds onto this cache for a number of hours.  If you reconnect whilst this cache is still available, it just assumes that those files are valid and does not try to convert them to "high quality".

Answer:

Hi Nick, Instead of deleted the drive folder, can we just delete the Google Photos folder in mydrive?
This problem basically started because i started using backup and sync,.

Also make sure when you do this, that you have the delete settings as "Don't remove files everywhere" for google photos, back and sync, and drive. I was also syncing my pictures folder to google drive at "high quality" and it removed some of my original files on my computer.. I may have had  the option set  to "Delete files everywhere" in one of these apps, I can't remember exactly. Therefore I turned off syncing the pictures folder on my computer and then deleted the google photos folder in mydrive.

I found this really confusing, given all the delete and sync options between google photos, google drive and my computer and other devices.  It is  really scary that you could accidentally delete your original files on your computer!!!

Therefore to be safe, first turn of syncing the pictures folder in backup and sync; then delete the google photos folder in drive, and make sure you do NOT set the option as "Delete files everywhere" in backup and sync, google photos and/or google drive.

Answer:

Hi Akumar, I think the most important step is removing your computer from the list of computers, and then waiting the 24 hours.  This is what makes Google 'forget' about your files.  But this is just guesswork - all I know is what worked for me.

Question: google photos shows my acct as old email address. can i change the emaill without losing everything

nothing

Hello Laura,

Changing an email will not delete any files in your device, but keep in mind that all saved files online(synced;backed up files) are tied to your gmail account. So the moment you change the email, the tied data from the replaced email will not be visible in your device until you switch again the email or transfer everything.

Hello! I've been using google photos to backup photos and videos from my phone for probably 4 or so years with no issues. In the last couple days when looking at pictures I discovered that photos and videos from before May 2019 are gone!! I had pictures from at least 2016 maybe before. I don't recall being warned that they would be deleted for any reason. Any help?? I would be so sad to loose them! Thank you!

Hello Myron Yoder,

Are you sure you have uploaded photos on google photos?
please see to it that you're on the same google account which was used to upload the photos?

Look at the archive and trash folder in google photos.
Check Google drive though.

Thanks.

Hello Myron,

I am sorry to say that we can't help you. The Google Photos team do not have the capability to restore photos, even if we could prove they existed at some time we have never had a positive outcome from Google.

The best we can do is to refer you to the comprehensive answer at https://support.google.com/photos/thread/102362504?msgid=102428468  which has a few more choices.

Why do I have iPhone photos and google photos on my phone? And when I delete a photo from my google photos it deletes it from my iCloud and I don't want it to

Answer:

Hi Jolene,

>>>> Why do I have iPhone photos and google photos on my phone? And when I delete a photo from my google photos it deletes it from my iCloud and I don’t want it to

~Somebody~ must have installed it.. It does not come installed on the iPhones.

~iCloud Photo Library~ and Google Photos have different approaches to data management and should not be used simultaneously.  When you use the trash can (or even "Free up space" or "Delete device copy") in Google Photos ~iCloud Photos~ is deleting the image also.

BE VERY CAREFUL if you have any images on your phone that you care about (Who doesn't?).. I suggest:
1.  You back up all the images on your phone to an external device (in addition to iCloud Photos), just in case there is an unanticipated issue.  You can do this easily with a Lightning cable and a computer.
2.  Uninstall the Google Photos app (assuming you want use ~iCloud Photo Library~ and don't know why you have Google Photos installed.
After you have done this.
3. If desired, delete the images in (using a computer or Safari or Chrome on your iOS device)..  Just delete a few unimportant images first and confirm that they are not being deleted in iCloud Photos:

Note: some people might say that I am included some unneeded step(s), but I am trying to be extra safe in avoiding data loss.

It is always a good idea to store important images in more than one place / tool.  My photos are in Google Photos, on my laptop, and on multiple external disk drives (not connected to any computer or network).

Best regards,   Dougsap (volunteer Google Photos user)

I recently discovered that the unlimited "High Quality" back ups of my photos and video's were no where near as good quality as the originals so decided to delete all from google photo's, change settings to back up original quality and then back up again! When asked during deleting process for permission to delete them (5000+ items) from all synced devices, I thought it meant from google photos on all my devices! Now all of my original videos and photos  from the past 4years have been permanently deleted from my phone!!! I've managed to restore them on google photo's but they're far inferior quality! I am so upset and annoyed and fail to understand how you're app has the prerogative to do that? Is there any possible way of retrieving the original copies???

Answer:

Unfortunately there is no way to recover the original version of those, but hopefully you didnt empty the trash so you may be able to restore the backed up ones that way

Answer:

I don't understand Charlotte: restoring does not mean that there "High Quality" goes down to Low Quality.
Unless you are talking about Whatsapp images which are of low quality from start.
At least normal pictures taken with your own iPhone still should be of perfect quality, but I don't know about movies or specials like Life-images.
Are you looking to them on a large 5K screen perhaps?

Answer:

No what I meant was I've restored the "High Quality" backed up copies from bin but they were not High Quality copies! If I were to print them they are grainy in comparison to the originals! I had never compared them previously, until I was backing some older pics up from my laptop and they were so blurred in comparison to the original! I'm gutted.

Question: How do you transfer photos from phone to computer?

I'm trying to transfer my photos from my phone to my computer. I'm not sure how.

Hello,

The easiest way to transfer the photos from the phone to a laptop is by connecting through the USB port.
Once done, select the option of "Data transfer" out of the ones offered by the pop-up message that flashes the moment you connect your phone to the PC.

Nevertheless, if you have freed up space on your phone, you can do so through Google Photos using the following options.

You can download photos by accessing the link https://photos.google.com through any browser on your PC. Select multiple pics through the combination of shift key + mouse & tap the three dots to see the download option.

Or, you can arrange for a bulk download by visiting the link https://takeout.google.com/
Select the Google Photos app for data download.
Once the file is ready, you will get an email. Access that & unzip all the attachments on your hard disk.

The auto generated collages are looking better and better it seems with new styles like film reels or even just the jumbled kind of layout.

Is there a way to pick a style when manually making a collage? It seems such a simple thing, select your pics, select a style, hit ok?

I'm just getting the square 'grid' style ones, am I missing something?

Thanks

The film reel one I like....

Answer:

Hi Grant,

Unlike the automatically generated ones, manually created collages don't unfortunately support selecting or changing a style.

I recommend that you send your feedback and suggestions to the Google Photos team as these instructions explain under "Send feedback to the Google Photos team" https://support.google.com/photos/answer/6156065
