I have created a shared album and shared it with my family members. One family member has added photos to the shared album. However, the added pictures do not have location information when I look at them. They do have exact GPS coordinates in the library of the family member, however.

Everyone is uploading pictures in original quality from iOS - all settings are configured to share location information.

Question: Phone Storage

Why my google photos app is taking so much storage of my phone? The cache size on google Photos setting not even reach 15mb 😌already updated the apps but still the same

Answer:

Hi, MadCatsz

Welcome to Google Photos Community Support Forum & thanks for your query.

Google Photos app stores the thumbnails of the uploaded pics. That helps while scrolling the library quickly.
Even if you clear the cache, the app will rebuild that.

Answer:

And 15 MB is nothing - it would be become dramatic if it would become 15 GB.
But the app as a whole easily may use 1 GB.
Why is that a problem for you?

Answer:

This is the problem
The cache size on the apps doesn't even reach 15mb but the app itself is taking 3.6gb of my phone storage

Answer:

But the Apple Photos app is using much more space and you don't blame that one :-)

We can't explain the usage of the Google-app, because on my poor Samsung also uses more then 2 GB for cache + data and my app manages more then 100K of shortcuts to the real files at Google, so I am not quite astonished.
You only can prevent this by uninstalling the app and then work via photos.google.com in Safari only. But then you need to select yourself what you want to have uploaded to Google. That site will take no storage on your phone at all, apart from what Safari needs for itself.

I am trying to create and share a google photo album with my husband. Every time I try to share it, I get a message saying "saving recent changes" with a bar that looks like it's loading. It takes forever, even if I only put one photo in the album. Can't get it to actually share.

Answer:

Hi Molly,

I'm sorry to hear you're having such complications with the app.

Have you tried this on Wifi and on Mobile signal to see if that makes any difference?
Also, have you tried creating an album with a different unrelated photo?
Thirdly, I'd suggest uninstalling Google Photos, restarting your phone and reinstalling to see if that makes any difference.

A few days ago I wanted to look through some videos but nothing was loading, I thought it was just a glitch but the whole day nothing was loading and while texting a friend I wanted to send a photo of a cat but nothing in mh camera roll showed up, same on discord when I tried sending a meme. Whenever I try taking screenshots it says my storage is full but I have plenty of storage left. It's been a few days and decided to do some research on google, it said something about clearing my cache, I cleared it and still nothing is loading, the only new thing is that everything is now white, when I click on a "photo" it's white, I can't tell which photo is which. I would like to backup my photos without syncing. If I delete a photo from google photos I do not want it automatically deleting it off my phone. Same for deleting off my phone to not auto delete from the server. This use to be standard. To go down that line of thinking I would like to have a setting in the google photos app to just see what is on the server and not see what is on the device. Auto syncing is old thinking.  Is this possible.

Answer:

Hi John,

Yes this is possible to do, you can leave Back Up and Sync turned off and only backup things manually as you want them. Then when you delete things from the web in Google Photos the device copy will stay on your phone.

Answer:

Yeah sorry, that's the way it works now. It'd be nice to get some extra options in the future but at the minute it's made for the 99% of people that want to back up their photos and remove them from their phone to save storage.

I suggest leaving a feature request directly for the development team by following these steps:
  1. Open the Google Photos app on a mobile device or go to photos.google.com using a computer .
  2. At the top left, touch or click the menu icon > Help & Feedback.
  3. Touch or click Feedback.
Please know that you may not receive a response, however the Photos Team are still reading the feedback! To see all of the feedback you have sent across all Google products, visit the Google Feedback Site

You use to be able to look at the google dashboard and it would tell u all the information but now I have no way of knowing and I use that number to keep track of all my photos. How else can I know the total number of photos I have (it's in the thousands so I can't just do select all)

You could have found this by searching on this forum:

Answer:

I tried their answer but I have a Mac and an iPhone so it didn't work. When I click attach files it would only show my iPhone library/Mac files.

Answer:

Thanks for replying. I am no iOS expert, but wonder whether it does work when you use the Gmail or Drive app on an iOS device.

Since we get that question rather often, I added a page to  Photos Resources :
How many photo/videos do I have in Google Photos?

Comments and suggestions are welcome (here).

Answer:

Thanks for the info. Then I assume that it only works on Android. Good to know.

Answer:

I do not know of another way to find out how many items there are uploaded to your Google Photos.
The information on the Dashboard was never accurate for many users, and instead of improving it, it's now vague.
I have a second account with not many photos/videos, and it gives:
  • by selecting: 1317 in Photos and 50 in Archive
  • The Gmail or Drive method: 1338
  • Dashboard: 1,000+ photos

After uploading new photos via Google Drive. Google photos assumes all are new, ignoring file dates in metadata or filename. I would like to backup old photos and these be visible in the Google photos app with correct date, they are not all NEW photos taken the day I uploaded them?

Answer:

Hi Luke, If you photos are showing up with the day you are uploading them is because they do not have any photo related metadata. For example png or scanned jpg are images with  only system file dates which reflect the uploaded date. Photos taken with a camera and containing Exif metadata are displayed with the Date Taken as per the Exif.

Happy to explain further if you can share an example, and to suggest ways round it if you can let me know how the images are being produced etc.

Regards,
Peter

Answer:

The files I am uploading most definitely have metadata right down to geotags. Since in most caes he, t exact same device was used to take them, as are used in Google photos automatically uploaded from my device.

Are there only certain types of metadata format Google photos can parse? And is there a conversion program?

I have placed these in folders by date too, hoping Google would work with that, since that's the way they are organised by Google photos automatically. I've used the same folder structure used by Google.

Answer:

Happy to explain further if you can share an example, and to suggest ways round it if you can let me know how the images are being produced etc.

Answer:

Thanks. The issue is looking now the files are from many different devices over years. Do the metadata is probably different, there is no example file worth providing. Is there any way Google can identify from the folder structure I created? (The same as Google's)

Answer:

There is currently no facility to automatically create albums in Google Photos using the folder structure uploaded to Google Drive.

I assume you are syncing to Google Photos with the Google Photos setting.  What you can do is search for the folder name; select all the photos in it, and add to a new album and title the album with the folder name.

Hopefully Google will come up with an automatic method, but it depends how many people are requesting it in Feedback.

Answer:

I uploaded the photos via Google drive to the Google photos folder.

It's a shame, because now it's totally screwed up! I'm now getting constant notifications "afternoon in...." as the scripts run, the script thinking I did this yesterday! despite this being from 2004 for example!

Is there anyway to undo this? If I deleted the Google photos folder would I lose all my photos? Everything is now merged together into a complete mess!

I'm surprised Google systems wouldn't be able to parse metadata of different types, and/or recognise that me placing the photos in a folder 2014/04/.. for example means these photos were historical.

PS I appreciate your help here, thank you

Answer:

Oh dear, there is no easy way, lets see what the best way would be.
  1. If you disable the option to Sync Google Drive photos the Drive copies you uploaded should all disappear from Google Photos
  2. If you disconnect the Google Photos folder from syncing then delete the Google Photos folder in My Drive the computer copies will be safe
  3. You can now delete the Google Photos folder without losing anything (once deleted it will not be re-populated with older photos, only new ones from the date of deletion)
  4. If that is a way of resetting things we can then look at how to go forward to upload the older photos to Google Photos.

If you want to do that and don't empty any trash before checking the Google Photos copies are all still there we can look at upload options.

How many 'old' photos do you have and how many folders are they in

Answer:

The Community is made up of volunteers trying to help by sharing our experience, we have no magic links into Google and are not in possession of any more information than what is in the blog.

The best way to let Google know your thoughts is to provide feedback, see:-

In summary, to send feedback to the Google Photos team
  1. Go to photos.google.com or open the Google Photos app .
  2. At the top left, open the Menu , then select Help & feedback and/or Send feedback
  3. You can tell them things like:
  • What you like or dislike about the app
  • Things that are confusing or don't work
  • Things that would help you use Google Photos better
I would suggest the most effective way would be to start the feedback with
#Drive & Photos followed by your thoughts and hopefully some constructive suggestions if you foresee any problems.

Hello,

I have a Pixel 3, whose unlimited original quality upload ends in Jan 2022. Then the only easy way to continue backing up for Google Photos would be to buy some kind of plan on Google One. My question is, anything uploaded to Google Photos until Jan 2022 through the Pixel 3 device will not be counted against the storage used in Google One plan? How would I know what was uploaded freely and what accounts for the new storage in Google One?

Thanks in advance!

Answer:

Pixel 3 rules.
========================
You get unlimited free storage at Original quality for all photos and videos backed up to Google Photos from Pixel 3 through Jan 31, 2022. Photos and videos backed up on or before that date will remain free at Original quality. After January 31, 2022 new photos and videos will be backed up in Storage saver quality (previously named High quality) for free. Photos and videos backed up in Original quality will count toward your Google Account storage.

I deleted about 75 photos from the Drive folder on my PC.  When I check the Drive Web app the photos are no longer there.  So varified gone from PC Drive folder gone from the Drive Web app.  However, the photos still show up on the Google Photos Web app.

If I copy the title of one of the deleted photos from Google Photos (e.g. "abc.jpg") and search drive web app it returns no matches.

How can a photo not be on my Drive but still in my photos?!

Answer:

Up to july 2019 there have been an optional syncing connection between Photos and Drive and on Drive these photos landed in the tab called Google Photos.
Deleting old pictures there never did remove them from Photos.
Or you have used the Backup & Sync on computer for a while and the pictures from pc landed on Drive in the Computer-tab. And then you have the same: pictures removed from Drive never were removed from Photos.
So what you see is normal, but of course very strange.
The reverse is even more strange: removing pictures from Photos will not remove them from Drive, but they start to use space in your account.
Goodnight

Question: Video Quality

I know this has been posted many times before, but I never seem to find a real answer to it. Honestl…

I know this has been posted many times before, but I never seem to find a real answer to it. Honestly, I hate how inaccessible Google is. There is no phone number to call, no email. They want you to ask questions here, but they don't answer questions themselves. Anyways my issue is happening on both my android as well as my web Google Photos. Even when I upload a 4k video at original quality and check the details, it says 14.7 MP, and shows 4k res, but when I click play it plays at 360p. I know someone else already posted a solution as clicking full screen and then that allows you to upgrade the res, but this is not the case. No matter what I do, I only get 360p resolution on my laptop. My phone is the same situation. No amount of waiting or replaying the video or whatever is helping. I also have to say I ran Google's video quality speed test and it said I should be able to play videos 720+. It is not even doing 720p!! Super frustrating, and all the previous questions on this topic are now locked. I would love to know what the heck is wrong with this once and for all because this has been bugging me for years. One more detail: the video is coming from a SanDisk Extreme from my GoPro, onto my laptop and then into Google Photos. With original quality selected, the space occupied matches both on the details of a video in Google Photos as well as on File Explorer.

Another issue I have had in the past that is somewhat related to the other issue is that on my phone, when I take a video and it uploads to google photos, I can view it in high resolution. When I move the file from my phone's DCIM to a hard-drive, the upload that is in Google Photos then becomes blurry. I don't understand how that is possible if Google Photos is supposed to be a cloud based service. Why would the quality of something uploaded in the cloud be affected by a file being in my physical memory or not?

Answer:

Same issue... I cannot find any answer why it is like that, plus I'm paying for extra space to keep all my picture and videos in original resolution... it's frustrating.

Answer:

@Sean
Comparable critics have been escalated towards Google yesterday, so we have to wait what comes out. But I will inform you (and Tomasz).

As far as I can judge now, it is the uploading via your pc-browser which causes the resolution reduction to 360p for horizontal videos - even when uploaded at original quality setting.
But a FHD-video uploaded via the phone-app plays fullscreen at 1080p on a FHD-monitor and a 4K video should be viewed in the Safari-browser on a 4K iMac of course (I can't check that :-)

Answer:

@Sean

I have the impression that 360p problem is solved during the weekend.
Can you verify that with a short testvideo uploaded via your pc-browser?

PS: I can't test short -4K videos and I don't have a 4K iMac.

Answer:

Sorry Sean, I was not clear enough by saying that the 360p problem was solved: immediately after upload all horizontal videos will play for a while at 360p, but after processing of unknown duration they will play at the automatic resolution that is possible for the given screen, like 720p for a 1366x784 screen or 1080p for a 1920x1080 screen. Then you also can select another resolution by clicking the > after 1080p.

So it is Google that needs time to prepare your video for different screens - even when uploaded in original quaity. Hélas they have forgotten to indicate that with the word "Processing..." on top of that recent video.
