You cannot delete the albums (categories) created by Google. The best you can do is ignore them. Like you I was not interested since I add all photos to albums, but once in a while I use the search function to find specific photos, and the indexing done by Google may help. Example: we often go to the zoo, but I wanted to find a specific photo where the kids were feeding the penguins. Searching for penguin found the photo because Google indexed it, not me.

I've been using Backup and Sync with Google Drive for a year or so with no problem.  Recently decided to use it to upload the contents of my Pictures folder to Google Photos.  Mostly it worked well (~45GB), but I can see that there are some pictures missing from Google Photos.  They still show up in the Pictures folder of my local drive, and I can see them in my Google Drive (through the web interface), so it's not a failure to upload.  The pictures in question are regular JPEGs, about 450KB.The upload completed yesterday and has run a few small updates since.  I've checked trash.Has this been seen before?  Are there any fixes?Thanks!

Here is one of the missing images on my local computer, along with size and permissions and EXIF info.  Thousands of pictures uploaded successfully, but there are a small number that have gone missing.  This is one.

It made it into Google Drive.  The path is Computers > My MacBook Pro > Pictures > Photos Library.photoslibrary > Masters > 2009 > Dec 18, 2009 > IMG_1222.JPG

By the way, until I started uploading pictures I didn't have anything in the Computers section.

Hi Harry,

Thank you for the comprehensive.  Unfortunately there is nothing to be physically done as Google Photos does not not provide direct user support so we can't ask the techies to look at it.

Actually, depending on your location, currently rolling out in the States is Google One which boasts support as per:

"In addition to storage, Google One subscribers will receive 24/7 access to support personnel via chat, phone, or email. This effectively brings to the masses a tier of service previously reserved for enterprise users on G Suite. Now if you have any issues with your storage, missing files, or sync issues, you can take them up with an actual person.

Other than that, the only scenarios I can think of are:

You upgraded from Google Photos Backup with the option to create a Google Photos folder in My-Drive enabled, in this case there would be no dependency between the My Mac file and Google Photos and subsequent moving of photos out of the Mac Google Drive local folder may have also removed the Google Photos copy.
I will leave out the accidentally deleted option, and the possibility of them being archived at   https://photos.google.com/archive otherwise I am sure you would know about it.

Looking more closely, it turns out that there are entire folders that backup and sync uploaded but failed to register with Google Pictures.  I've looked at file format, size, color space, folder name, etc and there is no pattern.  

The good news is that uploading through the web seems to work well.  I've uploaded each subdirectory of Photos/masters (corresponding to one upload for each year), and checked as pretty carefully and not found any missing pictures (and no duplication either).

Welcome to Google Photos Community Support Forum & thanks for your post.
 
Google Photos never uploads the same picture multiple times.
What we see as duplicates have some differences in file format or metadata.
Additionally, if you have activated Raw + JPEG capture or bracketing in your phone app, that would create duplicates.
 
Regrettably, Google Photos doesn't provide any means to remove the apparent duplicates. You have to search those manually.
 
However, you will find some tips in the following article compiled by experts with comprehensive experience on how to avoid duplicate photos & how to remove those.
