Go to photos.google.com on your computer browser -- are the photos there? If so, then you know they're safe.

Try going to Settings>Apps, select Google Photos, then Storage, then Clear Cache. If that doesn't help, you could also try Clear Data. If you clear data, then when you open Google Photos again, it will resync the photo database from your Google Photos in the cloud (which might take a little while).

The easiest and cleanest way to know what they are seeing is probably to log into the account that they use with an Incognito Window in Chrome (or similar in other browsers).  It might be most straight forward to do this on a computer if you have one available (but this is not critical).

It is always a good idea to store important images in more than one place / tool.  My photos are in Google Photos, on my laptop, and on multiple external disk drives (not connected to any computer or network).

Hello Alex,

 

The safest way to delete from Google Photos is to delete the Google Photos app and delete the photos at https://photos.google.com/  or in bulk at https://photos.google.com/search/_tra_ where they are sorted by upload date.

The camera roll photos will not be affected.

 

If you need to reinstall the app do not enable Back up & sync.

You can switch-off syncing until you have fast wifi and the loader connected.

It does sound like Google Photos is trying to backup all your photos and videos from your phone since you just installed it. You can turn off backup, or turn on the option to only upload on wi-fi. Once the initial backup is complete it should get better.
