Free up space checks that a photo is backed up then deletes it from the local storage
Delete in the Google Photos app using the trash
- Deletes both the device copy and the backed up web copy
- If internet access is available the photo is put in the web trash and is permanently deleted after 60 days
- If Internet access is not available the photo is put in the app trash and is permanently deleted after 30 days or when the app data is deleted
Delete in the app using the 3 dot option to Delete from the device, either singly or by selecting a batch
- The photos remain backed up and can be seen both in the app and on the web
Delete using a Gallery app (Gallery Go etc)
- The photos remain backed up and can be seen both in the app and on the web

What you see in albums are no copy-files but links to the pictures in your library. And these links are saved in the database in the background of your Google Photos site and not on your phone.

So I would suggest to create albums https://photos.google.com in the browser of your Macbook just to exclude any incorrect operation of the Google app on your phone.

Just because there is no reasonable explanation why they get empty.

Something like Free-up space to clean-up phone-memory perhaps.

The Google app is a bit misleading, because what you see on top are the pictures stored on your phone and you can't see if these pictures also are stored at Google already. And in fact you can't create albums with locally stored pictures, so they must get linked to photos which are on the web already.

And I get the impression that something goes wrong when the locals are deleted and replaced by the webcopies, causing these empty albums.

Basically this also can happen on Android, but the app on iPhone only can work in front and not in background - so the chance on incomplete backups is much greater.

Welcome to Google Photos Community Support Forum & thanks for your query.

You can add a person through the following steps.

Tap to open the photo which contains unidentified faces & then slide up or tap the three dots

.
If the app had failed to include some faces in that picture, then you will see a prompt "XX faces available to add".

Tap the edit icon at the extreme right edge. (An icon of a pencil

That will show identified faces in square boxes & their thumbnails at the bottom.
Tap on the + sign on each thumbnail.
Then the app will show you all the identified faces till that time.
You can select the right one.

If not, tap the + sign at the top right corner of the screen.
That would create a new grouping altogether.

Once created, the app may take some time to bring all the related pictures to this new grouping.
Otherwise, you can go through the collection & add the photos to the newly created group, manually, through the same steps as described above.

PS. The edit feature may not be available in some regions. If you happen to be from that, then regretfully nothing can be done.

You did not tell that, so you immediately should have changed your Google-password to make it impossible for her to cause any further damage - even if that would not harm you directly anymore.

As said: the app always shows what you have on phone. But because most people never have created albums, you can't see what you have copied to Google untill you have switched-off backupping.

Therefore you need to go to photos.google.com in the Chrome-app and if almost nothing is there, it never has been there or is deleted by your ex recently. In that case you fully are dependant what you still have on phone and copied to your personal computer (if done).

Welcome to Google Photos Community Support Forum & thanks for your query.

To reduce the photo size, you can do so through these two options in Google Photos.

Upload the picture in high quality. That will produce some size reduction.
Crop the pic to remove unwanted portions from the borders. That will give further sizer reduction.

Still, if you wish to have some more reduction, then please use another app "Snap seed" by Google.

Once installed, the editor in Google Photos shows that option through "More".

In the settings of Snap seed, you can do image resizing within a range from 4000 px to 800 px. Additionally, you can choose JPEG compression ranging from 95% to 85%

A combination of both options would resize the file to the desired number.
