If the camera that took the picture was GPS-enabled, the exact location of where the picture was taken should be embedded into the image file's metadata (unless the photographer disabled this option).
 
If those location details are present in a picture you've uploaded to Google Photos, you can see the GPS coordinates and a small map by swiping up while looking at the picture on your Android device. 
 
Sometimes Google Photos will attempt to estimate the location based on clearly identifiable landmarks visible in the picture and/or your location history (if there are other pictures taken around the same time that do contain GPS info, also taken with the same camera, and usually uploaded together). Keep in mind that in these scenarios the location is only an estimation and will be clearly marked as such when you view the map in the Info panel. 
 
If the picture contains no GPS metadata, and Google is unable to generate an estimation, there is nothing that anybody can do to determine the location. It is possible that other software or apps like Google Lens may be able to provide their own estimations, but those will just be other guesses based on visual cues in the image. For pictures without detailed unique backgrounds or known topography, it's unlikely you'll ever be able to determine the location of a picture.

This is usually seen when the camera was set to the wrong time zone. It's a common error. 
 
When you're looking at the picture on the Google Photos website (you can't yet fix this from the smartphone app), open the Info panel on the right side and you'll see the small pencil icon beside the date & time. Clicking that will allow you to correct the date and/or time, including the time zone. 
 
Keep in mind, though, that such a change is only for display purposes within Google Photos. So, if you download that picture and examine its details, it will still contain the original timestamp.

Tap to open the photo which contains unidentified faces & then slide up or tap the three dots .
If the app had failed to include some faces in that picture, then you will see a prompt "XX faces available to add".
 
Tap the edit icon at the extreme right edge. (An icon of a pencil ).
 
That will show identified faces in square boxes & their thumbnails at the bottom.
Tap on the + sign on each thumbnail. 
Then the app will show you all the identified faces till that time.
You can select the right one.

Restoring the backed up pictures would be defeating the whole purpose of the free up space exercise.
 
To bring back the pics to your phone's gallery either, you can download photos one by one.

Alternatively, you can install the Google One app. There is a one time option to restore up to two hundred most recent photos to the device.
However, that will not restore the local folder structure.

Can anyone help me please? I recently bought the OnePlus 9R and now my Google Photos is backing-up all photos from my device, even though I have clearly disabled backing-up from all folders other than camera folder in the "Backup and Sync" setting.

My previous 2 phones were the OnePlus 6 and OnePlus 3, and I never faced this problem with them, it used to back-up only camera folder to my Google Photos. But now, every image I download from Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, Chrome including screenshots in my new device are all being synced with my Google Photos every day.

I have disabled these folders at my Google Photos "Backup and Sync" settings, but it is still backing-up anyway. Can anybody help me please? It is really cluttering up my Google Photos and I don't know what else to do. :( I would be sooo grateful for any assistance.

Ps. I am using the vanilla OnePlus 9R software, no rooting or any other modding done, just the factory setting phone, and my Google Photos app is up-to-date.

Please look to the individual folders straight under Pictures on device on the Library-page. 
If you open a folder, the backup switch should be in OFF-position. 
Then new pictures which arrive in these folders should not be showed on the Photos-page anymore. 
Hopefully this helps. 

PS: you should be aware that what is called "Camera" is a Google design mistake. It is the DCIM-folder in which the camera-folder is the main subfolder, but due to some dull phone-manufacturers non-related folders are put in the DCIM-folder also and that often is the case for the Screenshot-folder. But I never have heard that Facebook and Twitter (which you should not use at all :-) put their folders in DCIM also.

Thank you soooo much, yes I just checked, my Facebook and Facebook messenger folders are weirdly lying inside my DCIM folder in this phone! I compared with my old phones and the Facebook folder is lying inside "Pictures" folder in those phones. As you pointed out, I'm sure this is definitely why it is syncing my Facebook images automatically too. Is there any way I can rectify this issue? Can I just manually move the folder from DCIM to Pictures folder or will that affect my FB installation files? Thank you so much for the reply!

Good to hear that I could help a bit. 
 
Probably you can't move that FB-folder out of the DCIM-folder without ruïning the Messenger-app, but I am not able to test such third party problems. And for sure Google will do nothing, although they have advised manufacturers not to use the DCIM-folder for their own business. You should discuss this on other fora, like Android World. 
 
So the only thing you can ask Google via feedback under youyr profile, is by showing the separate folders within DCIM in which only the real camerafolder is synced by default. This also is important for many others who complain about the enclosed screenshot folder merely. 
 
Also a good reason to stop with Facebook, but also Whatsapp is inferior because it lowers picture quality, but also strips all metadata - so the downloaded stuff has original dates anymore. 
 
To my first impression Google Chat (the follow-up of Hangouts) within Gmail is the best solution on chat-level, but direct sharing via Google Photos also can be a good solution because the whole world is using Google Photos almost automatically. That would avoid a lot of follow-up problems in future.

Thank you Rinus. I guess I am still using FB only for the memes, which I download and then send to my friends in WhatsApp :) Also, I don't have many friends using Google Chat.

Thanks to you, I was able to identify my problem and using proper keywords, I was able to find my exact issue in different Android forums. It seems a lot of people are facing this issue too. One of the top suggestions was to create a ".nomedia" file in that FB sub-folder inside the DCIM folder, which worked out perfectly well for me - My Google Photos didn't sync my FB images anymore.

The only downside is, my gallery and WhatsApp/FB image attachments also no longer detected this sub-folder because of the ".nomedia" file, so another suggestion was to activate the ".nomedia" during Google Photos backup, and then deactivate it again after that (using this nomedia app by gx labs), and then repeat the process every time.

This seems to work for me too. I guess this is the only work-around I can do for now (unless somebody can suggest an easier solution). This takes some effort, but at least it is better than spamming my Google Photos backup with stupid FB memes. :) Thank you for everything once again Rinus.

There are a few things you can try to locate your missing photos. Examine the steps in the Help Center.

You can also see if your photos were deleted inadvertently:

Most likely these problems are caused by the transfer app.
By why are you doing so? 
Normally the camera is connected to your laptop and the (new) files are copied to some (new) folder via the general filemanager (or via the Photos-app in Windows-10) and then they can be uploaded straight into https://photos.google.com
Please tell us the reason for your abnormal procedure.

I use a Canon camera and the picture transfer app for Canon is only available on the iOS device. So I have to transfer all the images on to my iOS device. But I need to transfer it onto my laptop which is a Mac. When downloading the images are still named "IMG_####" but then when backed up onto Google Photos the number that starts with 7 appears.

Even more worse: Google Photos does not sort on filenumbers, but on dates only. Normally it are your shooting dates & times and then the pictures automatically are in chronologic order. But that transfer app seems to change these dates into the moment of downloading and that is sick design. 

I am no Mac-user, but just connect your Canon to your Mac and import its new pictures via the Photos-app (or iPhoto?) or insert its sd-card in the slit. Then you also can process these images like all images should be and then they can be uploaded straight into https://photos.google.com without any problems. 
That's all I can say about.

By doing so, you also degrade the quality of your camera immediately because Google compresses to allow free storage. You can prevent that by changing the backup-setting to original, but because the transfer app ruïnes the exif-data, it does not even makes sense to download to your Mac.

But you probably mean a slit for normal SD-cards like in most camera's (or micro-SD within an adaptor). 
SIM-cards are for operating your smartphone, not for storing pictures and video's.

Otherwise it’s not possible to recover photos or videos permanently deleted from the Trash. However, you may install to your Android device a deleted photo recovery app (be sure to pick one that doesn't require rooting) https://play.google.com/store/search?q=recover%20deleted%20photos&c=apps and run a scan for anything to recover.

Answer:

There are more comparable complaints, but it is possible that your upgrade to Android-11 has caused stricter restrictions for safety. I would suggest to install the simple Google Gallery Go app in order to do these movings. But you should be aware that photos in folders that were synced to Google already, will cause problem because they stay synced. So you can't remove them from the Photos-page of the app without deleting your local original as well as your copy at Google. 
Hard to advised because we can't check ourselves, unless you tell more details.
