The main photos page is the master where all you photos are shown. Creating and adding photos to albums just adds a link to the main photo which means that if you delete the main photo it is no longer available for the album.

Adding a photo to an album does not use any storage, but if it is preferred to not see the master in the main page you could select the photo and use the 3 dot option to Archive it which removes it from view.

So I try again and again my collage only has photo A, A and C. No matter how many times I try photo A is in the collage twice and photo B is not. And when I just select photo B-just to look at it without the collage guess which photo pops up? It's photo A ! I cant even select photo B even though I specifically just want to see Photo B. It's like google thinks both photo A and photo B are the same and I can't access photo B at all. This has never happened to me before and the app doesn't need to be updated. But google photos for some reason won't let me select photo B at all. Only photo A appears... despite photo B being in my uploaded photos. I have two accounts, and the option to edit/correct faces is available on only one:

Editing faces is available on an account where "Grouping similar faces" was activated in 2017. At that time Face grouping was not officially available in Europe (where I live), but could be activated abroad or via VPN and remained active.
On the second account Face grouping was activated when it became available in Europe. On that account the editing pencil is missing. We asked Google why, but did not get a satisfactory reply.

So You have similar issue to mine. My account was created long time ago, like 2014 or something but automatic face recognition was turned on in 2019 I think. I also live in Europe and at that time this option was available here, but manuall editing is still locked for me.

The second screenshot i've posted, comes from my brother's account, that as You have mentioned, activated this option via VPN, way before it was available in europe, and it works fine for him now.

But still, I won't get back in time. This doesn't solve my problem. I want this option available on my account as well.

Following is text from the official Google Photos Help page about deleting and restoring photos and videos:

Regrettably, there is no option to do so on a batch of photos.

Alternatively, you can install the Google One app. There is a one time option to restore up to two hundred most recent photos to the device.

However, that will not restore the local folder structure.

There is no requirement to join Google One. The option is available to everyone.

However, the method may not be helpful to recover something when the count is more than two hundred.

Or, you can arrange for a bulk download by visiting the link https://takeout.google.com/.

Select the Google Photos app for data download.

Google Photos never uploads the same picture multiple times.

What we see as duplicates have some differences in file format or metadata.

Additionally, if you have activated Raw + JPEG capture or bracketing in your phone app, that would create duplicates.

Regrettably, Google Photos doesn't provide any means to remove the apparent duplicates. You have to search those manually.

If the AI has identified the face, then, you can follow the steps as below to create a new group.

Tap to open the photo which contains unidentified faces & then slide up or tap the three dots

If the app had failed to include some faces in that picture, then you will see a prompt "XX faces available to add".

Tap the edit icon at the extreme right edge. (An icon of a pencil

That will show identified faces in square boxes & their thumbnails at the bottom.
Tap on the + sign on each thumbnail.
Then the app will show you all the identified faces till that time.
You can select the right one.

If not, tap the + sign at the top right corner of the screen.
That would create a new grouping altogether.

Once created, the app may take some time to bring all the related pictures to this new grouping.
Otherwise, you can go through the collection & add the photos to the newly created group, manually, through the same steps as described above.

PS. The edit feature may not be available in some regions. If you happen to be from that, then regretfully nothing can be done.

So I used the "share" function in Google Photos (web) to share them with Google account B, and in account B saved all photos to the account. Then I severed the link from account A, and made sure they were all in account B before deleting them from account A. Everything was fine.

But a few days later I opened account B and... no photos at all! Does anyone know how I can get them back?

To transfer photos from account A to account B it is indeed important that the photos are, after sharing, saved to account B. You say that you did so and also checked that the photos were really present in https://photos.google.com/ when signed in to account B. Deleting the photos from account A should not affect the photos added to account B, except that they will start using storage.

If all the above is correct I see no reason why the photos should no longer be in account B. Can you have a look at following places where you might see these photos:

You can also go to https://takeout.google.com/settings/takeout where you should see year albums for the photos in account B. You could try to download one to see whet is there.

This should of course not happen. Google keeps telling us how safe your photos are on Google Photos, but the huge number of people complaining about loosing photos (often by own mistakes) shows that this is not correct: NO system is safe without a real backup.
