Now, I understand it's going away, so I installed the Google Backup and Sync. I didn't pay enough attention to the settings, and it started backing up everything on my computer. Now, I've stopped it, but I have almost no space left and am getting a warning that I soon won't be able to get emails. I wanted to delete the photos out of drive, because I only wanted them uploaded to Google Photos, but not drive. Evidently, if I do that, it will delete them off Google Photos as well? If I change the settings to stop syncing everything both ways, and then delete the photos from drive, will it still delete them from Google Photos? Thank you!

Hi Audrey, a difficult question, if you are having difficulty with the lack of space you might need to reach out to Google via the general Support Page.

If you can't see anything in help forum you can raise support tickets or chat with Drive support. Please let us know if you get an answer so we can help other users.

As a general rule, if a photo is using quota I.e. >0 at https://drive.google.com/drive/u/0/quota you can delete it without deleting from Google Photos

I don't have a computer. I have a flash drive that connects to my phone. So I want to transfer photos from my phone to the drive. I'm retired and this seems far more complicated than it should be. I'm trying to store photos cause google is gonna start charging everyone apparently but really my phone recognizes the flash drive and since google wants to change things they should get their IT people to put a choice...move to flash drive to help us. All I did was make new album in my photos app and sort existing, old photos into it. I do not want those photos backed up on my drive.

Albums exist at Google only and does not contain picture but links to pictures in the library. So what you see is the upoading of these pictures to Google - you can't avoid that.

But it is not clear to me why this should use mobile data instead of wifi.

Look in general setting for connections, because backup is off.

PS: normally 105 photos would not have used 4.7 GB, so there must be several videos included - maybe only one 4K video - terribly space consuming - also locally on your phone.

on your Android device, open the Settings app
tap Apps (or Application Manager)
tap Google Photos
tap Storage
tap CLEAR DATA

There can be multiple reasons for the backup not to happen.

# The quantum of photos to be backed is high.

# WIFI connectivity is intermittent. Too many devices connected to the same router thus restricting the bandwidth.

# Download & upload speeds are too asymmetric.

# Google Photos app is not allowed to use

Data in the background
Mobile data
Mobile data while roaming

# Activation of data saver through the settings.

# Putting a limit on the daily use of mobile data through the settings in the app.

# Putting a limit on the use of total data in a month through the settings in the phone.

# Activating battery saver or super saver mode.

Can you please go through these checks & confirm that these are addressed?
