That's ugly Judith, but if you are logged-in into the Google Photos app under the small circle right-up with the same account as used in its backup-settings, you should see your photos and albums - if it were albums created within Google Photos and shown on the lowest part of the Library-page. 
Else free-up could not have done its job. 
Please check on photos.google.com in the Chrome-app for that account - they shpould be there at least - also your albums.

You don't need a laptop, because you can do that in the Chrome-app (within the Google widget) on your smartphone also. But a laptop has the benefit of a large screen. 
 
PS: on a laptop which is not your own, you need to use the incognito or inprivate window in the Edge-browser to log-in with your Gmail-account on photos.google.com - else you may disturb the settings of the user. Nevertheless you will receive a warning from Google about logging-in on a new device and then you should answer that it was you. Good luck. 
 
PS: nasty to hear about the new lockdown on NZ and the recent attack. Be carefull and try to stay well.

If a deleted photo or video isn't in trash, you can't restore it. You won't be able to restore a photo if:
  • You moved it to trash more than 60 days ago.
  • You moved it to trash, then emptied your trash.
  • You permanently deleted it from your trash.
  • You permanently deleted it from your device's Gallery app without backing it up first.
You can consider a third-party data recovery software if the photos were still on your phone at the time of deletion. Typically you download the software to a computer, attach your phone via USB cable to the computer and run the program to attempt data recovery on local storage (not on Google's servers.)  I don't have a recommendation, and you can do a search for appropriate software and decide if it is worth the attempt.

I suggest, you put your phone in aeroplane mode. Turn off Wi-Fi access.
Next, clear the cached & stored data of the Google Photos app through the settings on your phone.
Now switch off Backup & sync.
Restart your phone & see whether that resolves the problem.

The face recognition feature is still evolving & is likely to err particularly when faces are either near about or blurry.
You can't stop the app tagging wrong face to wrong group.
However, you can correct that through the following steps.
  • Tap to open the photo which contains incorrectly identified faces & then slide up or tap the three dots .
  • Tap the edit icon at the extreme right edge. (An icon of a pencil  ). That will show identified faces in square boxes & their thumbnails at the bottom. 
  • The ones with a - sign are the identified faces. Tap on that & the face will get transferred to the collection of thumbnails with + sign.
  • Now tap the + sign. Then the app will show you all the identified faces till that time. You can select the right one. Then the photo will get transferred to the right collection.
PS. The edit feature may not be available in some regions. If you happen to be from that, then regretfully nothing can be done.

Google Photos album 'Places' only showing a few places. The photos were uploaded years ago. This issue happens in all platforms and browsers. If I search on the search bar for the missing locations, I can find them no problem. Location history and camera GPS was always enabled. I even manually checked the location on the missing photos and it's there.

But, they will never appear on 'Places' album.

The album is not empty. Only some places showing. Not all of them.

Clearing cache, deleting app data and uninstalling and installing again the app does not work.

As of June 1, 2021, any new photos or videos you back up in High quality (now named Storage saver) or Express quality will count toward your 15 GB of Google Account storage or any additional storage you may have purchased as a Google One member.

Remember that storage is used across Google Drive, Gmail and Photos, so you may want to review all apps to see if there is a way to delete unwanted mail or Drive files to free up storage.

To entirely delete the photos stored on the cloud and stop using the services, please follow these steps on your Android phone.
  • First, turn off backup & sync.
  • Next, uninstall or disable the Google Photos app on your phone.
  • Next, open the link https://photos.google.com through any browser on your phone. Log into your Google account if the browser asks you to do so.
  • After that, go on deleting the pics one by one. You can speed up this step if you do so through a desktop PC. There, you can select multiple pics through the combination of the Shift + Mouse key.
  • Once you have deleted all the pics, empty the trash bin also.
However, if the collection is sizable, you may not see the intermediate stop of storing the pics in the Trash.
Once done, please block the webpage https://photos.google.com within all browsers available on your phone & desktop PC so that you do not visit that site again accidentally.

Photos that have been deleted from Photos, from the folder that was synchronized with the folder in the Phone Gallery, can not be returned back, they are deleted without the possibility of recovery.

"How to deactivate your account in the Photos application":
 To do this, open the settings and select Autobackup and Sync and Turn off all folders.

After that, deny access to the SD card if it is.
Then click on your email, and in the menu select — Remove active account. In this case, you deactivate the account for the application.

After that, go to Phone settings, and delete the data of the Photos application, and then delete the cache in Storage.
So you can not have an activity for this application
