I'm running into an issue that seems simple, although I see that many other people have run into similar issues on different phones and Android versions over the years.  I've surveyed most of the "solutions" described in those threads, and nothing works for me.

Presently, when I select a photo and click the bin and confirm move to trash, I then get a dialog saying I need to change my settings to allow access to the SD card. I then get an odd "SD card" dialog that lists a bunch of folders, and an 'ALLOW ACCESS TO "SD CARD"' button at the bottom. I click that and it gives me the weird confirmation question 'Allow access to "SD card" in "SD card"?' I click "Allow". That sends me back to the Photos app, where it shows the photo that I tried to delete, which apparently did not delete it. I can repeat this sequence ad infinitum, with no change.

If I go to phone settings, Apps, and then Photos, it shows how much storage I'm using in "External storage".  I had earlier had this set to "Internal\

I want some photos just kept on my phone, so I try to delete the cloud copies but keep them on my phone. I did it as following:

I uninstalled Google Photos App on my phone, and delelted the photos on web, and clear the trash bin.

Them, I find that the copys on my phone are also deleted:(

So frustrating.

I try to ask the Google drive team to recover them for me, but noting come back. (because i didn't turn on the Google Photos fold on Google Drive?)

Is that a way to recover thoses photos on my phone? Where did those photos on my phone go after beeing deleted by Google Photos?

The Google Photos App was already uninstalled before I delete the photos on web, how can the sync processing still working?

If I didn't uninstalle the Google Photos App on my phone, would it ask me to remove the local copies when I was deleteing the cloud copies on web?

The app syncs everything with everything. 

Deleting on the web, will delete the original (if still present). 

So you should not do that unless it is a useless picture. 

Just hide it by archiving.

Another option would be to copy that picture to a folder not synced, because then the original in the camerafolder may get deleted in the normal way. 

But there always will become a day that you must remove your local pictures to get space for the next holiday and then you must use the Free-up space option of the app.

I am not sure if the archived pictures then will stay  locally. 

It makes no sense to switch-on the GP-folder on Drive because it contents will sync also - so that is no safe place either. The folder is meant for special applications in Drive or for downloading to desktop.
