I have a Motorola g7 power and it includes the google photo app.  It has been working well for years.  In the last week, when the app photos is launched, it closes down within seconds of its own accord.  Briefly a banner appears saying an update is required, I have completed the update, the processes advised from Google Help and the advice in goo.gle/3o5JIVl but the problem persists.

I should be grateful for some advice.  I have not completed a factory reset yet.

  • Free space available on your phone
  • Have you activated battery saver or super battery saver mode?
  • Have you activated data saver mode?
  • Have you put a daily or monthly limit on the mobile data?

I lost my phone but relied on my google photos to have backed them up as I'd set it to automatically back them up. Now I have lost photos and was wondering if there's any way I can retrieve them without access to my phone.

Answer:

Hi Belle,

>>> Now I have lost photos and was wondering if there’s any way I can retrieve them without access to my phone.

Sorry, if you don't see them at:
https://photos.google.com/u/0/   (if Google Photos was installed, set-up, and opened periodically to check for "Backup complete") or possibly
https://www.icloud.com/photos/  (if using ~iCloud Photo Library~)
They aren't available in the most common ways from the cloud.

Other ideas are welcome.

It is always a good idea to store important images in more than one place / tool.  My photos are in Google Photos, on my laptop, and on multiple external disk drives (not connected to any computer or network).

Best regards,   Dougsap (volunteer Google Photos user)

I deleted some pics from my camera roll to see if it would up delete from Google photos.   Thank God i didn't delete all of them or important pics because they deleted from Google photos too.

What or how do I free up space from my photos without deleting my pics from Google photos?

Answer:

Hi, Claudia Cedillo

Welcome to Google Photos Community Support Forum & thanks for your post.

First, you need to go through the following steps to ensure everything from your phone is there on the cloud.
  • Go to the library view & tap view all on the "Photos on device" tab. In that view, no folder should have a cloud symbol with a slash on that. If you find so, please tap the folder & switch on Backup & sync.
  • Check the status of Backup & sync in settings. That should say "Backup complete".
Moreover, some social media apps hide the download folders from visibility through Google Photos.
Nevertheless, you can manage that unhiding through the settings in the respective app.

Once you ensure everything as above, you can be sure about the backup status of the photos & videos on your phone.

Next, to remove the backed up pics from your phone but retain those on the cloud, you go for the "Free up space" option in Google Photos.
However, before going for "Free up space", please create a local backup by copying the content from the phone to some external HDD or USB storage device.

Next, when the quantum of photos awaiting the free up action is too large & also the phone has very little space, the "free up space" command fails to do anything.
Also, the app may crash.

To mitigate the problem, please start deleting manually.
To do so, tap to open the photo and slide up.
Below the pic, if you find the suggestion "Backup now", tap on that first.
Once complete, tap on "Delete from device". Now, the photo will get removed from the phone storage.

Once a sizable space is free, you can try using the "Free up space" option again.

We're in a large project of scanning family photos into Google Photos. I'd love it if the Google engineers could recognize dates printed on or around the photo and update the metadata accordingly. Has anyone found a technology for such a thing? (Example attached)

Answer:

Hello Mike,

Not sure the Google Engineers will add this feature any time soon.

Best I can recommend is EXIF Date Changer which can batch inject Date Taken from the filename.

I use Bulk Rename Utility first to rename the jpgs to IMG_YYYYMMDD_HHMMSS (happy to give you an example script if required) Of course this is only feasible if there are significant numbers on the same day.

Peter

I have been backing up photos via google photo today but I found a number of them (not 100% of them) took up space in my account.

From my understanding, I should have unlimited storage for original quality photos and videos uploaded from my Pixel 3 until tomorrow.

Could anyone please help me understand why some photos uploaded by me were counted towards the storage?

4.6G in total. An example of them shown below - it said it was uploaded from an Android device (my Pixel 3).

Answer:

Just want to make a note that now more has been counted towards my storage. I might have another android device registered shortly so making a note here to avoid confusion of whether I uploaded from my other device.

Hi David,

If you sign into the google photos app with your old account details then any photos backed up to that account will show there. Or check on the web : https://photos.google.com/

If you old phone is broken and won't turn on if they weren't backed up then it could be difficult without getting it fixed.

Question: Uploding very slow

What can I do uploding process to slow how to speedup

Hi, ankit soni 9872

Welcome to Google Photos Community Support Forum & thanks for your post.

There can be multiple reasons for the backup not to happen.

# The quantum of photos to be backed is high.
# Insufficient free space on the phone for the app to work.
# WIFI connectivity is intermittent. Too many devices on the same router are restricting the bandwidth.
# Download & upload speeds are too asymmetric.
# Google Photos app is not allowed to use:-
  • Data in the background
  • Mobile data
  • Mobile data while roaming
# Activation of data saver through the settings.
# Putting a limit on the daily use of mobile data through the settings in the app.
# Putting a limit on the use of total data in a month through the settings in the phone.
# Activating battery saver or super saver mode.
# Existence a zero byte file in the collection.
# Bloatware on the phone interfering with the smooth working of apps.
# Too many apps running in the background.

Can you go through these checks & address these issues?

Question: iCloud to Google Photos: Photos acquired from third-party apps syncs with the wrong date?

I've been trying to transfer my iCloud Photo album to Google Photos for weeks, and trust me, I have …

I've been trying to transfer my iCloud Photo album to Google Photos for weeks, and trust me, I have read up on a lot of this. My issue might be better suited in an Apple forum but I figured I'll try here first.

First, if you are experienced with iCloud and Google Photos, here is a one-sentence summary of the description below: "After downloading all my iCloud Photos to my Mac, B&S used the download date on photos that originated from third-party apps (I think), which makes sense considering the EXIF metadata that these photos contained, but I am wondering if there is a workaround here.

I've been using the iCloud "Optimize Storage" option to save my photos in iCloud. In order to transfer my photos to Google Photos, I realized that I had to use the "Download Originals to this Mac" option, and then use Backup and Sync (B&S) with the settings depicted below. I downloaded all my iCloud photos to my Mac Sept. 13, 2019.
The problem is the dates on the photos with little to no metadata included. A good amount of my photos were synced to Google Photos with the date from when I downloaded the original photos to my Mac, i.e. Sept. 13, 2019. I noticed that all the photos that were synced incorrectly had minimal metadata in the Photos app, i.e. just date and time. However, I also noticed that some of the photos that actually did sync correctly also had, apparently, the same minimal metadata (just date and time).

After examining closer the origin of these photos, I noticed that many (if not all) of the incorrectly synced photos were photos that I had acquired from third-party apps like Snapchat, Messenger and WhatsApp (oddly enough, photos from Instagram seemed to sync perfectly fine).

I then used exiftool in the Mac terminal to thoroughly analyze the date and time metadata on a selection of the photos, and discovered the following:

- Photos that were incorrectly synced to Google ("third-party photos") had the metadata:

[File:System]   FileModifyDate                  : 2019:09:13 12:19:55+02:00
[File:System]   FileAccessDate                  : 2019:09:20 14:54:51+02:00
[File:System]   FileInodeChangeDate             : 2019:09:20 14:54:29+02:00

- Photos that were synced correctly to Google even though they appeared to have the same amount of metadata in the Photos app, contained a tiny bit of extra metadata with the correct date:

[File:System]   FileModifyDate                  : 2019:09:13 12:13:38+02:00
[File:System]   FileAccessDate                  : 2019:09:20 15:43:55+02:00
[File:System]   FileInodeChangeDate             : 2019:09:20 15:09:13+02:00
[XMP:XMP-photoshop] DateCreated                 : 2019:02:25 22:51:54

I found an article explaining how More than one date is associated with each photo file. In short, this article states:
             Google Photos will choose:
    1. DateTimeOriginal — if available; if not then:
    2. CreateDate — if available; if not then:
    3. ModifyDate — if available; if not then:
    4. FileModifyDate
So, if you followed along this long, all of the above actually makes sense. The photos that synced correctly despite seemingly having the same amount of metadata as the incorrectly synced photos, contained a "DateCreated" line with the correct date that trumps the other lines according to the list above.

Does anyone have experience with this sort of problem? The correct dates of the "third-party photos" are obviously stored somewhere within the Apple Photos app but is there any way of extracting this and including it in the EXIF metadata file for Google to interpret it ?

I hope I made the problem clear, thank you very much for any input whatsoever!

Answer:

Hi Simon,

"The correct dates of the "third-party photos" are obviously stored somewhere within the Apple Photos app but is there any way of extracting this and including it in the EXIF metadata file for Google to interpret it?

I think it is more a case of Apple Photos seeing the original date the images were created rather than it being stored anywhere within the Apple Photos app. The images with the XMP date survive downloading so are used by Google Photos as you rightly presumed.

On Windows there are numerous ways to inject an Exif date, but on Mac? Hopefully someone will chime in with some options. It depends on how accurate you want the date to be, how many photos, will batches of the same date be acceptable, is there an option to choose the original third party app folder so that copying doesn't introduce a new date, etc.

  • Tap Group similar faces.
  • Tap on the slider in front of "Face grouping".
Once done, the programme may take six to eight hours to group the faces. That depends on the size of your collection.

Do you want to search using your pics in Google Photos? Or some different one? Can you clarify?

Answer:

I guess that you want to do a "reverse image search", that is: find visual matches.

You can do that in Google Photos with "Google lens".

That article does not mention the web app https://photos.google.com/ but when you right-click on a photo it has the option "Search image with Google Lens".  That option is also available in other Google services like Google search.

Finally there is Google Image search https://images.google.com/

Please note they are still linked to the backed up copy and if you want to delete any in the future you should use the 3 dot option to Delete from device,
