Once your photos have been permanently deleted then you won't be able to get them back from Google Photos, first you'll need to check to see if they're still in your bin. You can find out how to do this by following the instructions at this link here.

To bring back the pics to your phone's gallery either, you can download photos one by one.
Regrettably, there is no option to do so on a batch of photos.
 
Alternatively, you can install the Google One app. There is a one time option to restore up to two hundred most recent photos to the device.
However, that will not restore the local folder structure.
There is no requirement to join Google One. The option is available to everyone. 
However, the method may not be helpful to recover something when the count is more than two hundred.
 
Or, you can arrange for a bulk download by visiting the link https://takeout.google.com/.
Select the Google Photos app for data download.
Once the file is ready, you will get an email. Access that & unzip all the attachments into your phone's gallery.
 
However, you will not get your original folder structure back.

I suggest you follow these steps to remove the person from the current grouping & add that to another grouping
  • Tap to open the photo.
  • Tap the three dots at the top right corner.
  • Now, you will see a thumbnail of all the identified persons and also a pencil icon  Tap the icon.
  • Now, all the identified faces will display a minus sign at the top left corner of the thumbnail. Tap that.
  • The thumbnail will now move down to the row of faces below with the tag "Available to add" and the minus sign will now change to plus.
  • Tap that plus. Now, the app will show the entire gallery of the persons identified to date. Tap on the right one & now the photo will get added to the correct grouping.

This ratio varies from phone to phone based on the display inch and so it cannot be defined. However you could try visiting online tools like this -> https://www.designrush.com/trends/what-is-my-screen-resolution
 
That might tell you the correct resolution.
 
Meanwhile instead of cropping the photo to right resolution you shall set it as wallpaper from your phone and pinch zoom in or out to fit it the way you want. Kindly try this one out as well.

There is no good ratio available for cropping because phonescreen have an absurd ratio like 2:1 instead of 16:9. So you should start with a 16:9 crop with the correct height, and then you switch to free crop to make the picture a tiny bit thinner. That is good enough for your homescreen. 

PS: the number of pixels is not relevant as long as your original has more then your screen.

What we see as duplicates have some differences in file format or metadata.
Additionally, if you have activated Raw + JPEG capture or bracketing in your phone app, that would create duplicates.
 
Regrettably, Google Photos doesn't provide any means to remove the apparent duplicates. You have to search those manually.
 
However, you will find some tips in the following article on how to avoid duplicate photos & how to remove those.

That's strange. Seems like issue with App configurations. Try the following,
  1. Try Force Stop to the "Google Photos" app: Settings > Apps > Google Photos > Force Stop
  2. Try Clear Data to the "Google Photos" app: Settings > Apps > Google Photos > Storage >  Clear Data (This will clear cache as well)
  3. Update the latest Google Photos app
Try editing after trying these. If not, kindly share what Android device/Android version are you using so that it helps in diagnosis purposes. Thank you.

You can't automatically.  
And it hardly make sense what you want as long as the pictures fit into your mainstream which probably will be family-pictures mainly. But a technical screenshot or a scan of some document can easily be hided in the archive to prevent disturbing your mainstream. 
You better can build thematic albums which can be viewed chronologically (also via Chromecast) and shared. See albums. These don't disturb your mainstream because they just contain links to that stream.
