The Google Photos app on your phone shows also photos that are on your device, but not (yet) uploaded. When "Backup and sync" is turned ON and you have a good internet connection they should start uploading, and you should see them on https://photos.google.com/

What we see as duplicates have some differences in file format or metadata.

Additionally, if you have activated Raw + JPEG capture or bracketing in your phone app, that would create duplicates.

 

Regrettably, Google Photos doesn't provide any means to remove the apparent duplicates. You have to search those manually.

The way I got my photos cleaned up, with the help of a friend who uses Google Photos, was to display all the photos and click on the box to the left of the header for each day's photos to select that day's images. Then scroll down to the next day, click to add those to the selection, then scroll down to the next day. Took about half an hour to clean out about 2,000 images.

My next question is, how can I stop Google sync and never get ensnared by it again?

Nothing wrong with the information of expert Janvb, especially about method 1. 

That can be much faster then the day-by-day method you have followed on https://photos.google.com

Warning: by deleting on the website, you also may delete pictures on your phone if still synced via the app. 

It is not clear how your pictures got on Google Photos, but most likely via the Google Photos app on your phone or by using the Backup & Sync app on your computer. In both cases you just need to log-out in the settings of these apps to disconnect from Google. The app on your phone will go on to show pictures, but that are the pictures in the camerafolder of your phone - not the pictures stored at Google anymore.

His solution worked for me. I went to his github URL link, then followed the instructions. NOTE: There are some coding updates, you need to go to GitHub then go to Issues section, and someone has a solution to the not clicking confirm issue. Just copy that piece of code into the original Rishab github code, and it should work.

It deleted 66GB worth of Google Photos in less than 5-6 hours. REALLY good.

To share your photo via email, please follow these steps.

• Tap to open the photo.
• Tap the share symbol at the bottom  
• Under “Share to apps,” select another app to share. Swipe left to find more apps. 
• Scroll through the apps list & tap on the required email app (Gmail, yahoo etc.)
• That will create a draft email with the picture as an attachment.
• Add the email ID of the recipient. Add subject & content to the email & then tap send.

Then we must assume that his (phone)photos are on photos.google.com in his browser, but the normal mail-app in Windows has no connection with such a website. 

Thus if direct sending from phone is not possible (why not?), he must download some photos from the site and then they can be attached to the mail like any normal files in the Downloads folder.

 

PS: if you are using Gmail via your browser, you have direct access to Google Photos via the mountain-icon.

Google photos prevent exact duplicates it might be different in some way like time frame shot etc if you can just compare the about info about this. 

 

If You need to delete it manually there is no feature that can delete all the duplicates, you can try a desktop website which will be easier to narrow down the photos tiles, and select all the duplicates and delete.

Each Google account has Google Photos, and each Google Photos is only connected with one account. 

You can connect to different accounts in the Google Photos app on mobile devices, and toggle between them. You will for each account see all photos uploaded to that account, but also all photos in the Camera folder (and maybe more folders) on your device.

Thus the fact that you (partially) see the same photos when connected to different accounts does not mean that these photos are uploaded to these accounts.

You can check in the web app https://photos.google.com/ what is really uploaded.

 

Can you, in the light of the above, repeat and explain your specific concern about deleting photos? 

I can already now emphasize that it is important to have a good (not synced) backup of your photos before you start deleting.
