Unfortunately the Communities are groups of volunteers and Google do not provide direct support to individual users.

Google One subscribers have 24/7 support, but detailed knowledge id not widespread yet.

Any photo from the current collection will occupy space only if you edit & modify that.

Historic pictures always are scanned in some recent year and not many do use the right software to give such images the right date (often not known exactly either).

So how did you have tried to find older ones???

Those are historic photos that I digitized and stored on my PC. I then manually changed the file dates to the historic year and month. These photos didn't show up after the upload to Google Photos. There seems to be a cutoff at year 1960.

Always good to tell such details immediately to prevent guessings.

The critical date is Januar 1, 1970 and I always forget why - it has something to do with old 32-bit software used by Google.

But that should not play a role because I have pictures uploaded with much earlier artificial dates.

So your method of uploading may play a role - can you explain how?

Thanks for your quick response. I just tried again with photos in a folder on my PC using the upload feature in the Google Photos app. All 61 photos (1947-1960) were uploaded successfully and showed up in Google Photos' photo collection (by year).

When you attempt to manually empty the trash/bin in Google Photos, another warning appears that explains the consequences of permanently deleting those pictures and videos.
If you choose to proceed anyway, there is nothing that any of the volunteers in this forum can do to help you recover your pictures.

Although there are multiple ways to transfer the content from the internal memory of the phone to an SD card, doing so through Google Photos allows retaining the backup and sync aspect.

Please follow the steps below to achieve the transfer.

Open Google Photos.
Tab Library.
Tap the desired folder under Photos on the device like Camera, Screenshots etc.
Select photos by long pressing then tap others after the tick confirms the first selection
You can also long-press and stroke down while still in a pressed condition, to select a batch.
Next, tap the 3 dot menu top right.
Tap Move to folder.
Tap New SD folder, type a folder name then tap Create.

Note that if the photos are backed up to Google Photos this will not remove them from the Photos, and even if the new folder is not selected for Backup & sync any contents will still be deleted if you delete that using the Google Photos app.

You may succeed in fooling the system if Google doesn't scan this device stamp.
However, in the long run, such infractions may become harmful to your account.

Thank you for your response. I note the following: as stated by Shimrit Ben-Yair Vice President, Google Photos in the original announcement about the change to google photos happening next month.

"If you have a Pixel 1-5, photos uploaded from that device won't be impacted. Photos and videos uploaded in High quality from that device will continue to be exempt from this change, even after June 1, 2021

The key phrase for me is "photos uploaded... from that device". It does NOT state that they must be taken using that device. For example if I want to save a photo from someone's Facebook it would be taken by another camera but would be perfectly acceptable to be uploaded.

This probably explains the recent increase in the price of second hand Pixel phones at least in the UK.

Not clear what you did exactly.

But normal downloads straight from the website https://photos.google.com in the browser of your laptop go into the main Downloads folder - but it can be a Zip-folder named Photos.zip containing more then one pictures - else it just is a normal file like 20190712_115204.JPG

Such a folder can be unpacked easily by clicking with the other mousebutton and then choose Unpack > Okay. Then you will get a normal folder with the name Photos and that contains your pictures. The zip can be deleted then.

However. photos do not get deleted spontaneously without any user-initiated action.

Nevertheless, any deleted picture is retained in the bin for sixty days.

If your delete action is recent, you will find all the items in the bin. The bin icon becomes visible in the library view. Tap that & recover everything available in the bin.

However, if you have emptied the bin inadvertently, there is no way to recover anything through Google Photos.

It appears to me, the backup & sync action through your phone was imperfect or you did not activate that.

The Google Photos app acts like a portal viewer showing everything from our phone and also the content backed up to the cloud,

Then, that creates a impression of everything getting backed up perfectly.

However, we need to check the status of backup periodically and look for the messages on "Backup and Sync" menu.

Further, we have to ensure every folder on our device is included in the backup & none shows a cloud symbol with slash.

If nothing was backed up to the cloud in the first place, regretfully, there is no way to recover those pics through Google Photos.

Further, since you did a factory reset, the data on the phone also must have got erased.

Use of any file recovery app also wouldn't be useful.

Sorry to say, you have lost your photos permanently.

But after 3 weeks, a reply came back that Google doesn't see this as a Pixel problem and closes the case as solved. It isn't a Pixel problem, but can't they help by forwarding to the right team for example?

Unfortunately the option is not available for newer EU and UK accounts following changes related to GDPR

On some older accounts or accounts used in other parts of the world the option is available.

If the Pixel team cannot forward issues to the Google Photos team then it is a sad reflection on Google's user support.

A complete reset of the Google Photos app may be help.

Check the app trash to make sure there are no photos and videos mistakenly deleted
- Empty the trash
tap the account icon at the top right
tap your email address and select Use without an account
Power down/up or restart the device
sign in again making sure you are using the correct email
check that the Backup & sync settings are correct and using the correct email
wait until getting photos finishes, could take a while
- Please wait until it completes leaving the app open and plugged in if necessary.

I took a Super Resolution photo using NVIDIA. The photo saved to the usual auto-sync folder setup on my computer with Backup and Sync. Instead of uploading the full quality photo, for some reason Google uploaded two lower resolution photos. There is only one of the photo in this folder and it's resolution is 7680 x 4320. The two photos that were uploaded are 5333 × 3000 and 3840 x 2160. Is there any reason for this?...

EDIT: Forgot to add, yes I have Google One and yes I have Google Photos set to upload everything in Original quality...

No logical explanation available and I can't do the same for testing.

But when uploading via Backup & sync the filesize is limited to 75 MB or 100 MP and maybe that is the main reason you got a compressed file of 16 MP (5333 x 3000).

But I don't understand the second one either.

@Jay, your settings only apply to manually uploaded photos direct to the web. On the assumption that you are backing up your phone photos using the Google Photos app you will need to set the upload size on the phone by tapping the 3 bar menu: Settings: Backup & sync to select Original on the phone.

You can always download images from Google Photos to a folder on your phone then delete the images from Google Photos. When you delete from Google Photos, the images will disappear from everywhere Google Photos is synced, but a folder on your phone that receives a manual download from Google Photos will not be one of those.
