I understand and I'll be happy to help. It can be possible that the photos weren't uploaded successfully to Google Photos (cloud) and also make sure you're logged in to Google Photos with the same Google Account that you used during the backup. Photos/videos that are not synced or backed up, will still appear in Google Photos and will have this icon

(which means not synced/backed up) or some photos/videos will also show up with the two arrows in a circle mean backup is in progress.

Once the upload is complete there will be no icon on any photos/videos. Often, many of us misinterpret that they are all backed up because the photos/videos show up in Google Photos and we over see the icons on each photo/video. If the photos/videos weren't backed up they cannot be deleted from the Google Photos library nor Trash.

In case, you are uploading a large amount of data (photos/videos), please know that it might take 24-48 hours for the photos and videos to sync across all devices. Please ensure to have 'Backup & sync' enabled on the Google Photos settings while you're backing up your photos and videos. To check is the content is backed up, login in to photos.google.com to checked for your backed up photos and videos.

However, if you're sure they were backed up, I recommend you looking for your video here:

If a photo/s is deleted from Google Photos, it would go to Trash/Bin for the next 60 days (after deletion). Unfortunately, if the photos aren't found in Trash or deleted from Trash, I'm afraid, you might not find them else where to recover them because Trash is the last resort to retrieve your lost/deleted photos.

Meanwhile, also try giving the below steps a try once again in a sequence to help resolve the issue:

Close the Google Photos app and re-launch it.
Sign out and sign back in to Google Photos with the same Google Account.
Clear App data:

Open your device's Settings app (not the Google Settings app).
Touch Apps.
Select Google Photos in the list.
Touch Clear data.

Update the Google Photos app on your Android phone:

Visit the Google Play Store.
Open Google Photos.
Touch on Update.

When I would like to upload a file to, say, GMAIL, or really any website- I had the Show Google Photos in Google Drive turned on, so I could access the file directory for my stored photos, and easily upload them.

When I want to post photos to a website, the site is calling the ChromeOS native files app. Which means that, since Show Google Photos in Google Drive no longer does what it says on the tin, I now have no way of uploading my photos to the internet, unless I navigate to the same website on the original device where I took the photo, or opening the app and manually downloading every individual photo I want (which then makes the photo take up device storage space, defeating the purpose of a cloud storage system) so I can access them in the native files app.

This whole thing is bonkers levels of incompatibility and if there's either a way to make ChromeOS's native files app show Google Photos as a directory the way it shows Google Drive, or for me to resume having the Google Photos directory in Google Drive sync like it used to, I'd love to know.

Normally the filemanager in Chromebook OS does not show any Drive-folders unless you have switched-on off line operation. And generally that will take a lot of local storage which makes using that option nearly impossible for tons of picturefiles present in the actual Google Photos folder which is dead now.

I don't know a solution for you, so i only can advice to use the feedback option to complain that Google is making your Chromebook useless merely.

After reading your reply I did the exercise once again.

Earlier, I had restricted the naming to my family members & acquaintances only.

Nevertheless, when I labelled a new face, that was not getting rearranged alphabetically.

Finally, this sequence of actions worked.

Remove all name labels.
Name the one which you want first starting with "A"
Come out of the app & use "clear all" to refresh the app.
Add label to the next person & then repeat the same steps

Further, I used alphabets only as adding a number was disturbing the order.

That worked & I could rearrange the persons in required order.

Please note, the feature is evolving & documentation is modest.

We have to find out something by experimentation only.

The Google Photos app Backs up & syncs the photos on our device.

That doesn't touch our photos unless

We use the option "Free up space" or
We delete anything from the cloud and then the app syncs & removes the one from the device.

However, these effects aren't spontaneous & initiate only through our intentional actions.

It appears to me that the camera app on your phone had some malfunction.

Can you try clicking some more pictures & check whether these are viewable through the file explorer?

Further, you can check the Bin in Google Photos to see something has landed there through delete action?

It's not clear which app you are using to prepare the notes.

Usually, Google Keep becomes the default app to prepare notes.

To enable pasting a picture in that, we have to copy that to the clipboard.

Alternatively, if you have downloaded photos, please open that through Google Photos. Tap the share symbol at the bottom & select the option "Keep notes". That will transfer the picture to a new note.

Alternatively, you can tap the + icon at the bottom left corner and select "Add image".

On the next screen click the Hamburger icon - the three horizontal bars at the top left corner. That will show the option to select one through Google Photos. Explore that, select the right one & add it to your note.

Sorry to read you didn't like the feature of grouping the photos based on the geolocation data or contents in the pics.

That's the automated processing by Artificial Intelligence.

It's the same way Gmail looks at the content in an email & adds that to our calendar.

Nevertheless, many users find that useful & like to have that feature.

However, regrettably, there is no way to stop grouping the pictures on "Things".

Where do I find the "downloaded Photos".

Where do they get downloaded to. For what purpose would I need to download my photos.

Nevertheless, any download through the browser will land in the Download folder.

The full path is storage/emulated/o/download

If you download through the photos app then that will appear in the "Restored" folder

The full path is storage/emulated/o/DCIM/Restored.

There is no need to download pictures to a phone. Nevertheless, some programs can't access the one on the cloud. In those situations, it becomes necessary to download the pictures first.
