Trump agrees to reopen government for three weeks after backing down from wall funding demands - Duration: 2:35.

We begin our top story this afternoon over in the U.S.

President Donald Trump has agreed to reopen the federal government after a five-week shutdown.

Congress passed a bill to normalize government operations,... although it remains a temporary

deal for now.

But it doesn't mean President Trump has given up on trying to secure funds for a border

wall,... with discussions over the matter far from over on Capitol Hill.

Our Cha Sang-mi starts us off.

The longest government shutdown in U.S. history has finally come to an end,... at least for

the time being.

President Trump agreed to reopen the federal governement Friday local time, backing down

after a 35-day stalemate... which didn't get him the billions of dollars needed to build

a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border.

Saying he has a "very powerful alternative" that he is not going to use at the current

time, Trump warned... that another shutdown or even a national emergency could be in store

if Congress does not agree to fund the border wall.

"We really have no choice but to build a powerful wall or steel barrier... (cut) If we don't

get a fair deal from Congress, the government will either shut down on February 15, or I

will use the powers afforded to me under the laws and Constitution of the United States

to address this emergency."

Following his remarks,...

U.S. Congress passed a short-term spending legislation to fund the government... and

allow federal workers to return to work until February 15th.

The shutdown first began after Trump had demanded 5-point-7 billion U.S. dollars to build a

border wall... amid Congressional disputes over the issue of border security.

"Over the next 21 days, I expect that both Democrats and Republicans will operate in

good faith."

Lawmakers will negotiate border security funding during the three-week window,...

and while nothing is clear, both parties expressed optimism that a deal could be struck.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi also told reporters she was "optimistic" and said she sees every

challenge or every crisis,... as an opportunity to do the right thing for the American people.

Some 800-thousand federal employees will now get back to work and receive their wages starting

next week.

Questions have also been raised about Trump's postponed State of the Union speech,... now

that the government is reopening,... but no firm date has been scheduled yet.

Trump prepares to declare EMERGENCY in desperate bid to fund Mexico wall - DAILY NEWS - Duration: 2:56.

Trump prepares to declare EMERGENCY in desperate bid to fund Mexico wall

US President Donald Trump has vowed to plough on with his bid to build a wall on the border

with Mexico after finally ending the government shutdown.

Donald Trump agreed under mounting pressure on Friday to end a 35-day-old shutdown without

getting the $5.7 billion (£4.32 billion) he had demanded from Congress for a border

wall.

But it is only temporary three-week pause on the shutdown with Trump not backing down

on his demand for the security measures.

The Republican president said he could declare a national emergency in order to get the wall

money without congressional approval.

The shutdown, the longest in US history, led to around 800,000 workers being left without

pay.

It also led the president to delay his State of the Union address.

But Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has remained unyielding in Trump's demand

for funding for the wall.

Trump has said a wall is needed to curb illegal immigration and drug trafficking.

Speaking in the White House Rose Garden on a chilly, sunny winter day, Trump said: "We

really have no choice but to build a powerful wall or steel barrier.

"If we don't get a fair deal from Congress, the government will either shut down on February

15 – again – or I would use the powers afforded to me under the laws and the Constitution

of the United States to address this emergency."

He previously has indicated he was considering an emergency declaration to dodge congressional

funding powers if lawmakers do not fund his wall.

Trump triggered the shutdown, which began on December 22, with his wall-funding demand

after being criticised by conservative commentators for not being firm enough.

"The walls we are building are not medieval walls," Trump said.

"They are smart walls designed to meet the needs of front-line border agents and are

operationally effective.

"These barriers are made of steel, have see-through visibility, which is very important,

and are equipped with sensors, monitors and cutting-edge technology, including state-of-the-art

drones."

"We do not need 2,000 miles of concrete wall from sea to shining sea.

We never did," Trump added.

"We never proposed that.

"We never wanted that because we have barriers at the border where natural structures are

as good as anything that we could build."

Pelosi Is Schooling Trump, But Hes a Slow Learner RealClearPolitics - Duration: 2:36.

Pelosi Is Schooling Trump, But Hes a Slow Learner RealClearPolitics

WASHINGTON Contrary to legend, Marie Antoinette probably never actually said "let them eat cake." The Trump administration is saying it loud and clear, though, to government workers who have now gone more than a month without a paycheck.

"I dont really quite understand why" unpaid employees are resorting to food pantries and other forms of charity, Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross told CNBC on Thursday. They should just take out loans from banks or credit unions to pay for necessities, he advised. Of course theyd have to pay some interest, but "theres no reason why some institution wouldnt be willing to lend."

Ross, who is a billionaire, should try supporting a family on less than dollar 45,000 a year, like most Transportation Security Administration airport agents do. He would be shocked to learn that banks do not treat every prospective borrower the same. "Where is the red carpet? Why are rose petals not being strewn in my path? What do you mean by no?"

At least Ross didnt advise unpaid employees to do what President Trump did whenever his real estate schemes threatened to collapse in ruin: Borrow millions of dollars from Dad.

Meanwhile, National Economic Council Director Larry Kudlow told a reporter that federal employees who are being forced to work without pay are "volunteering." The truth is, of course, that if they dont work, they will lose their jobs.

This is the heartless, clueless worldview with which Republicans in Congress have aligned themselves. They demonstrate no sympathy whatsoever for the 800,000 government employees plus hundreds of thousands of contract workers who are being made to suffer because Trump does not understand how the Constitution works.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is teaching the president, but hes a slow learner.

Trump got his latest lesson Wednesday when he sent Pelosi a letter arrogantly demanding that he be allowed to deliver his State of the Union address next Tuesday in the House chamber as originally scheduled. He was, in effect, daring Pelosi to follow through on her threat to postpone the speech until the government was reopened.

Pelosis response reminded me of another San Francisco enforcer, the fictional Dirty Harry, who told miscreants: "Make my day." She gave Trump formal notice that she will not take the formal steps necessary to arrange the speech, period, until the shutdown is over. End of discussion.

Trump grumbled about how Pelosi "or Nancy, as I call her" "doesnt want ... the American people to hear the truth," and he had made defiant noises about giving the speech in some alternate venue. But finally he crumpled like a cheap suit, accepting Pelosis decision that the address will take place after the shutdown ends. Thats "her prerogative," he acknowledged.

Just as he threatened not to surrender over the speech, Trump insists he will never cave on his demand that Congress give him dollar 5.7 billion for a border wall. As I said, hes a slow learner. A deal that would let him claim some measure of victory has always been available. The only question is how much more political damage he wants to do to himself and his party before he takes it.

Leading Democrats have strongly indicated that they are willing to give Trump dollar 5.7 billion for "border security." Some portion of that money could be vaguely earmarked for barriers and fencing allowing Trump to tell his base that Congress gave him money for his border wall, and Democrats to say they did no such thing.

This would be a great deal for Trump because and I cant say this often enough the "big, beautiful wall" that he ridiculously promised during the campaign is totally unfeasible and will never be built, much less paid for by Mexico. And it would be a great deal for the president because the Constitution gives Congress, not the president, the power to decide how public money is spent.

All Trump is accomplishing with the shutdown is to send his approval numbers lower, even as measured by friendly pollsters such as Rasmussen. And if the government remains closed much longer, he will be hanging millstones around the necks of Republican senators who must run for re election in 2020.

The fact that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has emerged from hiding tells me that hes ready to end this farce. He should start by explaining to Trump that the president doesnt always get his way and that instead of referring to Pelosi as "Nancy," he really ought to try "Madam Speaker."

Author Claims Trump Keeps An Enemies List, Much Like Richard Nixon - Duration: 4:23.

Next week there's a new book coming out by a man named Cliff Sims.

He worked on 20, uh, Trump's 2016 campaign, uh, then it works at the White House as a

communications eight until May of last year.

The book is called team of Vipers.

My 500 extraordinary days in the Trump White House in this book, Mr Sims has made a lot

of, uh, accusations, claims, whatever you want to call them about Donald Trump himself.

And one of the most, I guess, shocking claims that he has made is actually a claim we've

heard in the past.

And that is that Donald Trump has compiled an enemies list because he's so paranoid,

not just of members of the press are people out there, but actually people within his

own White House, he is afraid they are not loyal to him.

So according to a story recounted in this book by Mr Sims here, a Donald Trump and Keith

Schiller, Trump's personal bodyguard, they were with him in the Oval Office.

And Trump said, let's make an enemies list.

So they got them a sharpie and he got White House stationary and he started writing down

the names of anybody within his own administration that he felt was not completely loyal to him.

Now, if this sounds familiar, there's a couple reasons why.

First and foremost, this is not the first time we've heard this story.

We have heard others in the White House also admit that Trump keeps an enemies list, and

if it sounded familiar, when we first talked about it and when others first talked about

it, it's because that's exactly what Richard Nixon did.

Nixon captain enemies list.

He kept an enemy's lifts of people within his own administration.

People in Congress, people in the media, people in Hollywood, Nixon just hated all these people.

And these are my omnium or run them down and keep this list.

The list is published.

It's available online.

You can find Nixon's enemies list.

And here we have just yet another parallel between Donald Trump and Richard Nixon.

You know, Nixon used to claim witch hunt there just after me for political reasons all the

time, much like Donald Trump, Nixon and kept an enemies list, much like Donald Trump.

Nixon's entire presidency was shrouded with the conspiracy investigations and all kinds

of mistrust from the American public as a result of it.

Same with Donald Trump.

There's only one thing left at this point and that's for Donald Trump to resign in disgrace,

telling us he is not a crook and I think we're all hoping that that last parallel between

Trump and Nixon does come true.

But back to Sam's book, right?

I mean this is, you know, guy was in the White House for 500 days.

He's got some stories to tell.

So let's talk briefly about a couple others, but he says, he says of Trump, he consumed

tv like the late Roger Ebert must have watched movies.

He commented on the sets, the graphics, the wardrobe choices, the lighting, and just about

every other visual component of a broadcast.

Sure.

He liked to hear pundits say nice things about him or White House officials defending them

from attacks, but everything came back to how does it look?

He also said that whenever the president would go out there and deliver a speech somewhere,

they would have to record all the networks and get screenshots of all the, uh, uh, Chiron's

they'd put on the bottom of the screen and then they would print them out and put it

in a folder to have ready for the president as soon as he walked back into the White House.

Why?

That was happening, not really sure, but it's a thing that happened according to a Cliff

Sims here.

The bottom line is that Donald Trump is a paranoid individual.

He cares too much about things that don't matter like television and money, but those

are the two things that Donald Trump cares about.

He cares about people adoring him and he cares about making more money and Cliff Sims accounts

of what has happened here.

Kind of back that up.

Especially the fact that he was willing to create an enemies list because he thought

there were people in his own administration who didn't adore him.

That doesn't make them an enemy.

Mr Trump.

It just makes them a decent American.

Ivanka Trump Hit With New Ethics Complaint For Enriching Herself From Trump Policies - Duration: 3:34.

The group citizens for responsibility and ethics in Washington has filed yet a another

complaint against Donald Trump's daughter, Ivanka Trump, for allegedly violating conflict

of interest laws over what this administration calls these opportunity zones.

Now occasion, not familiar with it, which I wasn't myself, had to do a lot of research

into this, but basically these opportunities zones.

This is a program that the Trump administration announced shortly before the midterms, and

what it is is they were offering me massive tax breaks to any developer real estate.

Whoever it is, would go into poor communities and start buying up real estate.

If you do that, go buy this real estate.

We're going to give you a massive tax break.

Well, who do we know that's in the real estate business that has a lot of money willing to

go around and snatch up all these properties?

Oh yeah.

Jared Kushner, Ivanka Trump's husband, and in fact, cushner actually owns an interest

in a company called contrary according to this crew complaint that was willing and able

and ready to take advantage of these opportunities zones because they have programs specifically

designed to help people get loans.

And buy up these opportunities zone properties, Ivanka Trump, again, according to the crew

complaint, was working behind the scenes to help this administration draft this plan to

come up with the plan and to help sell it to other members of the Trump administration.

Therefore, her involvement directly in this and her husband's involvement by directly

financially benefiting from this was 100 percent in illegal conflict of interest.

And they all knew it.

She didn't recuse herself, he didn't sell his interest, she pushed it, he profited.

So thereby she profits a little bit off it as well, obviously.

And that's where we are today.

And that is why crew has been out there as one of the leaders with these particular complaints.

I mean, they've done it with Kellyanne Conway, with her of violating the Hatch Act.

They've had to do that multiple times with her.

Um, they've done it with the emoluments clause lawsuits.

They've done it multiple times with Ivanka Trump herself.

They are staying on top of things as they have for years now.

And that is sorely needed, especially in the environment that we have in Washington dc

today.

We need these outside watchdog organizations like Cru, like public citizen out there showing

the corruption, highlighting the corruption, but more importantly, taking the corruption

to court, filing the complaints because it is one thing to point it out and hope that

the media picks it up, but it's another to say we don't care if the media talks about

it.

We've got lawyers and we're going to try to do something about it to put an end to it

because make no mistake.

The only reason people like Ivanka Trump and jared Kushner in the White House today is

because they think they can profit off of it.

Hell, a very strong argument could be made that the only reason Trump is in the white

house is because he thinks he can profit off of it and according to other crew complaints

and lawsuits in the past, he has.

He has a lot.

He's making a ton of money off being the president of the United States and Ivanka Trump and

jared kushner are using every possible opportunity that they have to do the exact same thing

as her dad.

Trump Plans Second Summit with Kim Jong-un - Duration: 4:04.

-Let's get to some news.

I heard that President Trump is planning to have

his second meeting with North Korean leader

Kim Jong-un next month.

But so far no date has been announced.

Which means right now Melania is like,

"Please be Valentine's Day. Please be Valentine's Day.

[ Laughter ] Come on.

[ Cheers and applause ] Come on. Do me one favor."

That's right. Trump is having another summit with Kim Jong-un.

Apparently their goal for the summit

is to finally figure out what to do with their hands.

[ Laughter ] [ Applause ]

Some more news.

I saw that the plans for the tower

President Trump wanted to build in Moscow were leaked.

And it was going to have a luxury spa named after

Ivanka Trump, which expected to attract

way more customers than the hair salon named after Donald.

Which is very -- [ Laughter and applause ]

You heard that -- the way he does his hair,

he has two Dyson hand driers. -Does he really?

-Yeah, and he just goes -- [ Laughter ]

Guys, listen to this.

A new poll found that California Senator Kamala Harris

is currently leading the 2020 Democratic field.

Yeah, you can tell that Bernie sanders is nervous

'cause he was just spotted pouring vodka

in his applesauce. [ Laughter ]

[ Applause ] You guys hear about this?

After just one week, former White House official

Anthony Scaramucci has left "Celebrity Big Brother."

[ Audience awws ] Can we see a picture of him

from the show? It's real. [ Laughter ]

-What? -Looks like Mafia grimace.

[ Laughter ] [ Applause ]

Looks like he stole a suit from the old Steve Harvey.

[ Laughter ]

Looks like the guy at a murder mystery party

who definitely did it. You know --

[ Laughter ] [ Applause ]

That's what he looks like to me. Sorry.

More TV news, I heard that CBS

is refusing to air an ad that calls for legalizing weed

during the Super Bowl.

Instead they're just going to air one of those

Matthew McConaughey ads that makes you feel like you're high.

[ Laughter ]

[ Applause ] -I'm gonna turn left here.

Then I'm gonna go, "All right, all right."

No, don't do that. Come on, you --

[ Cheers and applause ] -Come on.

-That'll do. All right, all right. We love him.

Speaking of the Super Bowl, I read that the stadium

in Atlanta that's hosting has a Chick-fil-A in the stadium.

But it's closed on Super Bowl Sunday.

[ Laughter ] What are they doing?

That's like if the Girl Scouts

decided to stop selling cookies on 420.

You know what I'm saying? [ Laughter ]

You have to be -- [ Applause ]

It's bad for business. [ Applause ]

It's bad business. Get this.

A billionaire just bought a $238 million penthouse

overlooking Central Park.

It's the most anyone has ever paid for a home in the U.S.

but since it's New York, he's still going to live

with three roommates.

[ Laughter ] [ Applause ]

And finally you guys, a recent study found

that today's students think they can learn more

from YouTube than they do from their textbooks.

You believe that? -Really?

-Yeah. It sounds odd.

But you can actually learn a lot of the same lessons

you'd find in a textbook on YouTube.

I'll show you what I mean.

For instance, if you're studying mechanical engineering,

a textbook will tell you that

"Modern aviation is safer than it's ever been."

On YouTube, they'll just show you this.

[ Buzzing ] -Look out for Junior. Oh, no.

[ Laughter ] Watch out for Junior!

[ Cheers and applause ] Don't just stand there,

and watch him go.

If you're studying communications,

a textbook will tell you, "When appearing on camera

always remember to remain calm and collected."

But YouTube will just show you this.

-So if you're going to practice -- [ Screaming ]

[ Laughter ] What is that?

[ Screaming ] -And finally,

if you're studying physics, a textbook will tell you,

"Do not underestimate the power of gravity."

But YouTube will just show you this.

-Lakim and his nice [Bleep] shoes about to jump in

this [Bleep] puddle. -I do it for the kids.

[ Splash ] [ Laughter ]

[ Applause ] We've got a great show tonight.

Give it up for The Roots!
