odds are overwhelming that there won't be a government shutdown the plain fact

is that neither party wants one so what happened between Donald Trump Nancy

Pelosi and Chuck Schumer during those 10 17 minutes on Tuesday was more about

political theater and blame-shifting the amount of money Trump wants four

billion dollars more for his wall than the Democrats are willing to provide is

almost negligible and the House Democrats aren't going to budge when

they take over next month what's at stake is the symbolism surrounding the

president's signature issue the media verdict is the Pelosi and Schumer

embarrassed Trump and boxed him into a damaging declaration he now owns any

shut down as the New York Times put it the trick in Washington has always been

to make sure government shut down his pinned on the other guy president Trump

is the first to ever pin one on himself with the time saying Pelosi and Schumer

essentially goaded the president into saying he proudly closed the government

for border security the Washington Post says the Democratic duo called out

Trump's falsehoods they exposed to mesh malleable about his promised border wall

they lectured him about the legislative process and reiterated to him that he

lacked the votes to secure the five billion dollars he seeks for the wall

but there's another view as these and other accounts acknowledged the border

wall and the broader issue of illegal immigration is immensely important to

Trump's core supporters he wanted to send them an unmistakable signal that

he's fighting for them and understands their concerns and then if he falls

short he can blame the Dems or with his recent comments that some of the wall is

already being built Trumpkin trying to cobble something together and claim

victory the incoming House Speaker seized upon Trump's tactic of brutally

personal insults Democratic allies leaked to reporters

that Pelosi later told party colleagues that she felt like she'd been in a

tinkle contest with a skunk adding it's a manhood thing for him as if manhood

could ever be associated with so much for the high road what the

president may not have fully appreciated is that the party seen as triggering a

partial government shutdown always pays a stiff price the Republicans were hurt

when they tried the tactic during the Clinton years and again during the Obama

administration but when Democrats were seen as precipitating a shutdown at the

end of last year they quickly backed off and made a deal within hours when real

people are hurt furloughs delayed paychecks national parks and monuments

closed the underlying issues get lost in the backlash of course that may not be a

factor if Trump doesn't really plan to take things past the brink I think it's

great to watch our leaders debating serious issues on TV Trump did that with

lawmakers last year on gun control but never followed through leading to

criticism it was all about the show but let's face it the process only goes so

far Pelosi and Schumer were right when they

told Trump that a deal needed to be made behind closed doors there's too much

posturing by everyone when the cameras are on the frenzy over the meeting will

quickly fade unless there's actually a Christmas season shut down but the one

clear loser was Mike Pence the media mockery of a stiff and stone-faced vice

president may have been unfair but the images will stick to him like tar paper

But in Washington the snowball metaphor might more accurately describe how a markedly different brand of climate politics is gaining support

 In barely a month, talk of a so-called Green New Deal ― a sweeping climate policy to simultaneously transition away from oil, gas and coal and ease widening income equality ― stormed from the fringes of policy debates into the political mainstream

 By Wednesday, the burgeoning effort to establish a select committee in the House of Representatives on a Green New Deal ― essentially a plan to make a plan ― picked up its strongest endorsements yet, netting support from the co-chairs of the 78-member Congressional Progressive Caucus and from the first labor union to back the proposal

At least 35 incoming or sitting House members support the resolution, as do four senators

 The proposal, championed by Rep.-elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), came as grassroots groups like the Sunrise Movement and Justice Democrats organized protests at the Capitol, with young activists occupying Democratic leaders' offices and urging lawmakers to pledge their support

Nearly 150 people were arrested Monday in the groups' largest demonstration yet.  "The idea that we give special attention to climate change should be a no-brainer," Rep

Mark Pocan (D-Wis.), a Progressive Caucus co-chair, said by phone Wednesday.  The resolution faced skepticism from the top Democrats on natural resources and energy committees that wield legislative power over the issues a Green New Deal would cover

But proponents tweaked language in the proposal this week to mandate the select committee to lay out a vision for a Green New Deal while maintaining existing committees' authority over the lawmaking process

 "I wouldn't even call it compromises. It was more specificities," Pocan said. "It was really getting at making it specific and workable

We wanted to make it so it could be an executable idea."   The resolution calls for barring lawmakers who have accepted donations from the fossil fuel industry from serving on the select committee

Maintaining legislative power for existing committees with members who might have taken contributions from oil, gas and coal donors could pose some risk but would be worth it, said Rep

 Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.), the other Progressive Caucus co-chair.   "The harm that's done in taking legislative authority away from the committees is far too great," she said

"Everyone is ready. There are a lot of champions in the rooms that we need them to be in who will be controlling the agenda

"  She pointed to anti-corruption legislation she introduced last month as a possible tool to keep lawmakers from sabotaging eventual Green New Deal legislation at the behest of powerful donors

 "Activists across the country will keep up the pressure to make sure every member is responding with the urgency that's necessary," she said

   The unusually speedy sausagemaking process inverts decades of Democrats' dithering on the rapidly worsening crisis caused by greenhouse gas pollution

That mirrors the Trump administration's aggressive efforts to unwind the few, relatively weak climate regulations that exist and to upend fragile negotiations at the 24th Conference of the Parties in Katowice, Poland, where diplomats this week are struggling to garner support for basic resolutions recognizing the scientific consensus on global warming

 The summit follows an October report from the United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change that found that world governments must halve emissions over the next 12 years to avert warming of 2

3 degrees Fahrenheit above preindustrial levels, beyond which climate change is forecast to be cataclysmic

The Trump administration announced plans to withdraw the U.S. from the Paris Climate Accord, but that won't legally go into effect until 2020

In the meantime, the administration has worked hard to further undercut the talks

The United States teamed up with Russia, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait to weaken a resolution to endorse the report — something the State Department outright refused to do

 Yet a congressionally mandated federal report last month, using research from 13 agencies, reached similar conclusions and found that the United States is already suffering the effects of sea level rise and extreme weather

 "The Democratic Party needs an answer for what their plan is to match the U.N.'s recommendations in the IPCC report on climate," said Waleed Shahid, the communications director for Justice Democrats, a left-wing group that played a leading role in Ocasio-Cortez's winning primary campaign

what's your thought you know one aspect of this ruling is the court didn't just criticize

the Obama State Department in Justice Department but highlighted the problem of this Justice

Department continuing to defend the indefensible he specifically talked about the chicane

eree of this justice department's continued defense and excuse making for the misconduct

of Hillary Clinton in the State Department of Justice Department previously so and he

also talked about not being terribly convinced about mr. commis testimony about the thoroughness

of his Clinton email investigation and

it shows you the value frankly Harris if we could promote you to watch a little bit of

having an independent group like Judicial Watch focused on this because Congress has

dropped the ball here the Justice Department frankly is on the other side of this even

during this

administration and you know the courts have been hoodwinked here to use a phrase that

the court highlighted in his decision and so they're not going to back down and now

because we have found out recently that Ivanka Trump also had her own personal email server

with some emails on it and she has talked substantively about how all of that sits on

the White House server or and and that nothing had been

deleted if critics of the Trump administration question about that comparatively to Hillary

Clinton and what you're seeking what is your answer well it frankly just highlights the

egregious nature of what mrs.

Clinton

did when you compare what happened with Ivanka Trump where you had some emails about government

business being sent on her private account before and after her work at the White House

emails by all accounts that were captured

and preserved which is in fact what they probably need to be but there's no legal prohibition

on using personal emails for government business now and again the prop the difference here

is Hillary Clinton specifically set up an email system to make sure no emails would

be

captured by the government and provided to investigators as long as she had anything

to do with it until as the court highlighted Judicial Watch caught him you know there is

another another difference to that I see that I wonder it could your FOIA or could this

investigation get to the bottom of will we ever know exactly how many and how the emails

were destroyed I mean we've heard all sorts of stories about this was taken out into the

woods and they attacked it and that server was destroyed I mean what are the facts that

you know so far about that that's important it's the deletions it's that it's that sort

of subterfuge accusation well at least half of the emails Hillary Clinton improperly took

from the White House were destroyed about 33,000 of them as best we can tell because

we've

been getting the emails that the FBI has been able even either either to recover or otherwise

find the FBI's only been able to find five thousand of them so there are what 27,000

emails still missing and highlights the egregious nature again of what mrs.

Clinton did

this massive destruction of government records she had no business taking any of these emails

out of the State Department and she did and the American people deserve full answers and

frankly the court I think is speaking for millions of Americans and demanding accountability

here and and I hope the

new Attorney General is paying attention the decisions like this because this is what's

New York to look into this so we have seen some troubling information on this and you

know I can't verify John's reporting he

always does a good job he has great sources and I'm sure there's much more to be learned

on it let me go back to his breaking news yesterday what we discovered apparently and

I don't know how this was not known when we go back two years now pretty much investigating

this whole issue the the Clinton bought

and paid for phony dossier etc what we now found out there is an email chain or a chain

of emails James Comey is on it top DOJ officials are on it and they knew and the Intel committee

had Intel community had massive questions about

the veracity the truthfulness the validity of the dossier which your memo and the Grassley

Graham memo point to as the bulk of the applications for the FISA warrant against quarter-page

when did you first find out about this email chain well I don't know that the email

chain and John's reporting is the same stuff that we're looking at although it sounds very

similar what we have been saying and this is when as high as the speaker of the house

we have been requesting for many months now and actually talked about on your show a

couple weeks ago that there are there are emails where there are read actions that we

are quite convinced that if that is unredacted and provided to the House of Representatives

to the to the Intelligence Committee it will be very clear that there is very much it was

very well known that there was a lot of

information that was not provided to the FISA Court leading up to the war the warrant on

Carter page so I don't know exactly who Jon sources are but I do know that we have been

trying to get these read actions from emails without look it's possible that we are we

are

talking about the same types of emails it's also possible Shawn that there's even more

emails that we don't even know about but but what we are aware of what I call the fourth

bucket of information it would be very clear that there were people within the FBI India

that knew well and good before they went

to the FISA Court that Christopher steel and others were up to some so your Sayle bad and

nefarious activity you say that these emails will be the fourth bucket the 302s would be

a second bucket the FISA application themselves especially the last one pages 10 through12

17 to 34 then the gang of eight information those would be the four

buckets what John is saying here that's correct and and those worst three remember Sean in

those first three that the president has actually called to have Declassified but he's holding

we're talking now recently said is this fourth bucket okay so what I want to ask you is if

they knew and if the Intelligence Committee knew that they were questionable that

the whole dossier was questionable and it was the bulk of the FISA applications and

they used it anyway we know that they omitted that Hilary bought and paid for it with a

footnote that said it might be have a political taint to it but they didn't say it was the

opposition party candidate is it possible that they knew it was not true

that they gave it to the FISA Court anyway that they didn't do their due diligence verify

and corroborated and that they totally and completely committed fraud on the FISA Court

not once before separate times meaning anybody that signed off on it was

signing off on an application to spy on an American with evidence that they at best thought

could very likely not be true yeah so remember what we've been looking at criminally has

been abuse of power whether or not there was a conspiracy to abuse power you know about

that you've talked about that for a long time what this gets into is this would

be the first clear evidence that we have on another major crime which would be called

lying to a federal judge which is a crime in a major crime so that is what the people

are talking about with exists it is the evidence that we have this would be called me signing

off on it

rod Rosenstein signing off on the last one though we have Sally Yates signing off on

it right well they're the ones that signed off on it but they're not necessarily the

ones who would have provided and doctored the information so really the people that

are cold here are the ones who were were in these

discussions that knew about the information that was not provided to the court even though

Adam Schiff will have a lot of issues with will be the chairman of the committee come

January will you still have the authority and the ability to get this information to

the American people yeah I mean the only difference is is that I will be the

Republican leader on the committee the question is is that the subpoena power will lay in

the hands of the Democrats the Senate would have the power to weaken that that's true

but we have also for many months here Sean been willing to we've said that look our investigations

over with the White House is going to be able to declassify a lot of this information to

help us out to

TRUMP SLAMS MUELLER FOR 'CONFLICTS OF INTEREST' — 'NO COLLUSION,' SAYS PRESIDENT

President Donald Trump slammed special counsel Robert Mueller on Monday and wondered whether

Mueller would be covering all of his own "conflicts of interest" in a preamble for the impending

report that summarizes his findings in the Russia probe.

Mueller (pictured above right), who has been leading the investigation into allegations

of collusion between Trump 2016 campaign officials and Russia since May 2017, is now winding

down the probe.

But Trump and other Republicans have often criticized Mueller for hiring a dozen or more

registered Democrats and those who donated to Democratic candidates — including to

2016 Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton — to investigate Trump and his campaign.

Trump has targeted Mueller's Democratic team members, dubbing them the "13 Angry

Democrats."

Most prominent among those 13 is prosecutor Andrew Weissmann — who attended Clinton's

election night party.

"When [Robert] Mueller does his final report, will he be covering all of his conflicts of

interest in a preamble, will he be recommending action on all of the crimes of many kinds

from those 'on the other side' … and will he be putting in statements from … hundreds

of people closely involved with my campaign who never met, saw or spoke to a Russian during

this period?"

President Trump tweeted Monday.

"So many campaign workers, people inside from the beginning, ask me why they have not

been called (they want to be).

There was NO Collusion & Mueller knows it!"

Trump added.

As the nation awaits Mueller's final report, news shows and outlets are permeated by endless

and rampant speculation.

Alan Dershowitz, Harvard Law School professor emeritus and a liberal who frequently defends

Trump, predicted Sunday on ABC News' "This Week" that Mueller's report will be "devastating"

to Trump — especially after the president formally submitted written answers to Mueller's

questions last week following months of wrangling.

"I think the report is going to be devastating to the president and I know that the president's

team is already working on a response to the report," Dershowitz said.

"When I say devastating, I mean it's going to paint a picture that's going to be politically

very devastating.

I still don't think it's going to make a criminal case."

Fox News host Laura Ingraham of "The Ingraham Angle" blasted Dershowitz on Twitter on

Monday, writing, "Is Dersh privy to info leaked by Mueller team?

His use of word 'devastating' would indicate either that or rank speculation."

Many liberals and some conservatives also freaked out after Trump fired former Attorney

General Jeff Sessions earlier in November and appointed acting Attorney General Matt

Whitaker as a temporary replacement.

Some feared Mueller and his Russia probe were at risk next — and pushed for Congress to

pass legislation barring Trump from firing Mueller.

Whitaker, who has been critical of the Mueller probe in the past, isn't planning on recusing

himself from oversight of the investigation, much to the Democrats' chagrin.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and other GOP senators insist Trump isn't

going to fire Mueller and that the legislation preventing the president

from

firing

Mueller

is unnecessary.

but Democrats took back control of the House.

And now, you know -- -Excuse me, excuse me.

They took the House. We took the Senate.

-Yeah. -And I told Chuck,

and I told Nancy the other day,

and they were at me from both sides!

They were spit-roasting me with questions.

And -- [ Laughter ]

And -- -Well, I would just say,

you know, if I could, Mr. President,

you say you took the Senate. You had the Senate.

-I had the Senate, and I took it back.

[ Laughter ]

-You lost the House.

You had the House. You lost the House.

-I never really lost the House, because the House always wins.

[ Laughter ] And we know that from a casino.

We know it from "Casino," the great Joe Pesci.

He gets put in that ditch.

And that's gonna happen to Don Jr.

if he messes up, I'll tell you that.

I'll tell you that. -Can I throw out some names

of some potential 2020 opponents, maybe?

-You can give me anybody you want.

They're all gonna lose.

And even if I lose, I promise you, I will not concede.

-Okay. What about Beto O'Rourke?

A lot of people are talking about Beto O'Rourke.

-Beto. Beto! Guy's a Beto male.

He's a total Beto male!

And he's a lanky guy, and he's big old neck apple.

You know that neck apple? -Yeah.

-The neck apple.

And Eve took a bite from the neck apple,

and then the whole thing was screwed,

so we can't have that guy. He's a snake.

-Elizabeth War-- Elizabeth Warren?

-Pocahonta-s-s-s-s.

Elizabeth Warren took the bait.

I don't know. Let me tell you,

I know a good guy named Anthony from Massachusetts

who would say, "Never let someone from Massachusetts

run for president, ever.

Doesn't anyone remember Dukakis?"

Dukakis. [ Laughter ]

Exactly.

-What about Cory Booker. -Book 'em, Danno!

Let me tell you about Cory Booker.

Guy's bald, big bald guy.

And he likes the ladies. We all know that.

He likes the ladies.

Booker, he's got a big mouth, and he used to jump over the --

He used to drive a car -- T.J. Booker, tough guy.

T.J. Booker.

And that guy totally resurrected his career from "Star Trek."

So unbelievable. -Oh, my God.

It's fantastic. Fantastic.

-It's frightening.

-Every now and then, someone would say to me,

"Hey, would you want to have the president on this show?"

And the thing I would say is, it wouldn't matter.

There's this idea that there's

a good interview out there with him

where he'll actually answer the questions that are asked.

Would you ever, though, like to, as him, interview him?

Do you think that you could maybe --

[ Laughter ]

You know, I've never thought I --

I guess, on my show, we had this same question.

And mind you, he was never gonna come to our show.

-Sure, right. -But we did have Deepak Chopra.

So, the point being -- [ Laughs ]

The point being, I don't think the value in interviewing him

is only for your own benefit, right?

Like, for your own humor benefit.

You're not gonna get information from him.

You're not gonna get anything new.

-Yeah. -And, to me, you just

serve a platform for him to peacock more.

And I think that the greatest or most bizarre thing

is that we're still, three years in,

trying to calculate what the pieces

that were missing about him,

especially in the media and his coverage,

and it's like, "There is no 'there' there."

I might have said this before but it's, like,

this is Chauncey Gardiner, like, times a thousand,

which is from "Being There."

-Put it on with your Steely Dan.

-"Put it on with your Steely Dan"!

And then get a rotary telephone and call your grandmother.

But I just don't think there's any value,

and I think that the thing is, you know, like a tumor,

which our President is a tumor on democracy,

we need to cut the oxygen off.

And the way you cut the oxygen off is stop focusing on him.

-Yeah.

-There's so many important things --

There's so many things that are important

that both sides need to deal with.

And, especially, I speak to the left, which is,

we need to think about the issues that aren't as sexy

as sort of like the marquee things of taking down Trump.

Tort reform, for instance.

I know no one wants to talk about it,

but people's rights in court are being taken away

by corporations every day,

and we have Amazon moving to New York very soon,

and arbitration is the name of the game

when it comes to trying to sue a business for money.

These are real things that affect people, right?

How we employ people, keeping children in prison.

Those things matter, and they're not interesting,

and they don't stay on the bill every day.

And prosecuting the president over a long-form period

on cable news isn't gonna do anything.

But we can do things every day that matter

by changing our behavior and how we interact

with people in our lives.

That's more important than interviewing the president.
