vice president Mike Pence is heading to California today to check in on the
construction of president Trump's border wall this as the president threatened
some major consequences if more funds are not dedicated to building it we have
to have borders and we have to have them fast and we need security we need the
wall we got 1.6 billion we come up again on September 28th and if we don't get
border security we'll have no choice we'll close down
the country because we need border security so will it get to that point
here now to weigh in as a Republican strategist Kimberly classic and Chuck
Rocha thank you both for joining us this morning Chuck where's your hat good
morning I walked right out and forgotten losing my mind all right I can't really
I'm gonna start with you on this so in terms of what's happening right now we
spent 1.3 trillion dollars in the spending bill which trump signed last
month that will keep the government running through the end of September but
now he's threatening another government shutdown if he doesn't get more funding
for the wall who will be blamed for that if it happens
definitely the Democrats I mean for the President to threaten to shut down the
country shows just how frustrated he is with Congress and I don't blame him
after a 14 month long witch-hunt Democrats aren't threatened by open
borders or sanctuary cities to them these are votes that they're banking on
from illegal immigrants if we were to break it down we spend about a hundred
and twenty five billion dollars American taxpayer dollars each year on illegal
immigrants say we give President Trump 30 billion for a wall think about all
the money we could save that Democrats could give away at a later date Chuck
what do you think who do you think would be blame do you think that will actually
even get to that point I don't think we will because Republicans are in control
of the Senate they're control of the house and they don't want to shut down
the government I've been running campaigns for over 20 years and a
government shutdowns always bad for people that are in power and so what
we're doing here is we have a political football we've spent more on the
water than we have in 25 years immigration is at an all-time low but
what Donald Trump is doing and I would give him credit very smartly is he's
Genting up his base because an off-year elections we're worried about the base
showing up to show up on both sides in campaigns that I'm working in all over
the country yeah this would be right before the midterm elections Kimberly
and not really something that the Republicans would need to happen right I
mean let's be honest a government shutdown is equivalent to what we had
from 2009 to 2016 under President Obama the shutdown we should be talking about
is of the nuclear sites in North Korea I'm excited to see president Trump go
down as a peacemaker in history and I'm excited to see him push this in
September as we get closer to it and Chuck what does it tell you that this
will actually be the vice president's second trip out to the southern border
wall as vice president does that tell you a direction that the Republicans are
trying to take the campaign as we move into midterms well what it tells me is
the political consultants there's four congressional races in Southern
California that could go either way that are right now held by Republican
incumbents and they're worried about the growth there of the Democratic base and
so what they need to do is they need to rile up those Republicans in California
that are common-sense Republicans I pay too much taxes I want to make sure the
government's not involved in my business and so he's going down there to show
face which is smart and as a political consultant I'd have him do that because
I think the tenure in Congress who controls it will come out of California
what did you think about Chuck just sticking with you for a moment the
images that were coming out of California all of the migrants jumping
over the border wall what did you think about that look as a Latino as somebody
whose family immigrated here I was thinking that good for these people who
have risked their lives to come to America but that's probably the wrong
imagery because you use that imagery everybody will use that imagery so
people in the middle of America would think that there are literally
undocumented people trying to jump over a wall which is just idiotic but is what
they were doing I mean they're jumping over the wall well they were just
sitting up there on top of the well cos they were saying in their statement that
they want to come through legally so they were climbing up on the wall like a
bungie idiots but they were actually going through the process of like you
said trying to get asylum Kimberly what do you think no this is not they were
clearly jumping over the wall because they want to get here we're at
capacity at the border right now and I'm glad that Mike Pence is going down there
to do something about it yeah you know you don't blame people for wanting to
come into this country because this is a great country it's a fantastic country
people you know we do welcome people but we want them to come here legally the
legal way right Chuck that's what you were just saying I would I did say that
there's a lot of people who come here undocumented like my grandparents and
now I pay more taxes than most people in my neighborhood so there is ways to do
it but immigration has changed over time and we need to adopt our laws in that
way well it looks like leading into the midterms this is going to be a topic
that both sides are going to talk about and making an issue thank you both for
joining us have a great day
