How Ivanka Trump and Donald Trump, Jr. Were Saved From Indictment - Duration: 4:41.

"SoHo, here it is!"

When Donald Trump announced the Trump SoHo in 2006, he called it "brilliant," "awe-inspiring,"

and a "masterpiece."

"Welcome to the Trump SoHo..."

But then things got messy.

And in 2012, Trump's two eldest children, Donald Jr. and Ivanka, faced possible criminal

indictment over their marketing of the building.

This is the story of how that case disappeared.

"I'd rather let the product speak for itself and let you see that what we've been

saying for all of these years actually is true."

Donald Jr. and Ivanka formed a Limited Liability Company called Donka SoHo Member.

And they both signed the licensing deal on Trump SoHo alongside their father,

who is now our president.

The building's condos went on the market in September 2007, right before the global economy

began to implode.

"Stocks all around the world are tanking."

"The stock market is now down 21 percent."

"Many Americans have felt anxiety about their finances and their future…"

In public, the Trumps and their brokers were bullish.

Donald Trump boasted there was a waitlist of 3,200 for just 400 units.

First, the building was 31 percent sold.

Then, 53 percent.

In June 2008, Ivanka told journalists the building was 60 percent sold.

But none of this was true.

In fact, according to a sworn affidavit by a Trump partner in March of 2010, the building

was only 15.8 percent sold.

In August 2010, the patience of some condo buyers ran out.

More than a dozen of them sued the Trumps and their business partners for deceptive marketing.

Meanwhile, prosecutors in the office of Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance began to investigate.

"Welcome to the Manhattan District Attorney's office, I'm Cy Vance."

They were looking at possible fraud and larceny charges.

By overstating the number of units sold, they believed, the Trumps were falsely inflating the value

of the apartments.

According to sources familiar with the case, investigators discovered emails between the

two younger Trumps discussing how to coordinate what false information to give potential condo

buyers about how many condos had been sold.

In one email, Donald Jr. assured a concerned broker that no one would ever find out about

the false statements.

Prosecutors believed those emails demonstrated Ivanka and Donald Jr. intentionally deceived

the buyers.

The Trump defense team argued that it was just "puffery."

With the evidence he had, Vance—the DA— needed to decide whether he would charge Donald Jr.

and Ivanka Trump with crimes.

But then, enter Marc Kasowitz.

"Ladies and gentlemen, I'm Marc Kasowitz, President Trump's personal lawyer."

He defended Trump University.

He threatened to sue the New York Times when it published a story about Trump groping women.

He also represented Bill O'Reilly, when Fox News ousted him over accusations

of sexual harassment.

Yeah, that Marc Kasowitz.

In January of 2012 Kasowitz made a $25,000 contribution to Vance's reelection campaign.

It was his first donation to Vance, and he instantly became one of Vance's top donors.

A few months later, in early May 2012, Kasowitz requested a meeting with Vance.

Following his own policy, Vance returned Kasowitz's campaign contribution.

On May 16, Kasowitz meets with Vance.

Then, in August 2012, the case against Donald Jr. and Ivanka was closed.

Vance had overruled his prosecutors.

Vance says he made the call on the merits and that Kasowitz's donation did not affect

his decision.

For his part, Kasowitz denies that his contribution was meant to influence Vance.

One month after the case was dropped, Kasowitz contacted Vance's campaign about hosting

a fundraiser for the DA's re-election.

Over the next year, Kasowitz personally gave Vance $31,993 and held two fundraisers for him.

Because the Trump case had been closed nearly six months earlier, Vance's campaign accepted

these contributions.

Now, Vance said he will return Kasowitz's second donation.

According to people who heard him, Kasowitz later boasted to colleagues about his role

in getting the Trump case dropped.

Though Kasowitz denies this.

To date, only 128 of the 391 units in Trump SoHo have been sold.

That's about 33 percent, if you're counting.

Brushing aside criticism of his administration's response to Hurricane Maria, President Trump visited Puerto Rico on Tuesday, hailing the recovery effort as an "amazing job" by first responders, telling officials they should be "proud" of a death toll that stood in double digits instead of thousands.

Nearly two weeks after the Category 4 storm raked the island, Trump, making his fourth visit to a hurricane zone in a month, lavished praise on local officials who spoke highly of him, while taking a veiled swipe at San Juan's mayor, who had previously characterized initial recovery efforts as ineffective.

In a televised meeting with officials in a hangar at Muniz Air National Guard Base, Trump struck an upbeat note about progress made since the storm struck on Sept. 20, knocking out the power grid, snatching away cellphone service, isolating dozens of rural communities and leaving hundreds of thousands scrambling for food, water, medicine, cash and gasoline.

But as sometimes happens when Trump makes off-the-cuff comments, the tone of his arrival remarks seemed jarring at times. He made an oddly jovial reference to the cost of the recovery effort, telling assembled officials: "I hate to tell you, Puerto Rico, but you threw our budget a little out of whack!"

The president, who has previously drawn attention to the island's crippling debt and faltering infrastructure, then added: "But that's fine."

Trump also referred favorably to the official death count on the island — 16, but expected to rise — by comparing it to the fatality toll when Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans in 2005, killing an estimated 1,800 people.

Sixteen people certified versus in the thousands," he said. "You can be very proud." Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rossello later announced that the number of deaths connected to the storm had risen from 16 to 34. Nineteen of the 34 were a direct result of the storm, the rest indirectly connected to the hurricane.

Some residents welcomed Trump's visit as a sign that more aid was on the way, but were disturbed by earlier comments seen as disparaging of Puerto Ricans and their local leaders.

He needs to see the devastation. He needs to put his own thoughts and politics aside," said Divinia Marin, 55, whose home flooded during the storm.

U.S. President Trump says American people's souls are stricken with grief - Duration: 2:31.

Over in Las Vegas.

The police is looking into the possible motives behind the deadliest mass shooting in modern

American history.

The girlfriend of the the 62-year old attacker claims... he was far from someone who could

plan such an atrocity.

Park Ji-won gets us up to speed with the investigation.

U.S. President Trump arrived in Las Vegas Wednesday local time,... where he met with

first responders, law enforcement officials, and survivors of the shooting massacre.

The president praised the bravery of those who risked or sacrificed their lives to save

others,... and said the entire country is grieving over the tragedy.

"Our souls are stricken with grief for every American who lost a husband or a wife a mother

or father a son or daughter.

(...) We struggle for the words to explain to our children how such evil can exist, how

there can be such cruelty and such suffering."

The police are still investigating the motive of the gunman Stephen Paddock,... while adding

that they have found no evidence... which indicates the mass shooting was linked to

terrorism.

"What we know is Stephen Paddock is a man who spent decades acquiring weapons and ammo

and living a secret life much of which would never be fully understood.

He meticulously planned on the worst domestic attack in United States history."

Meanwhile, the gunman's girlfriend,... 62-year old Marilou Danley,... returned to the United

States from the Philippines late Tuesday,... now being investigated by the FBI as a "person

of interest."

In a statement released by her attorney,... she said she had absolutely no knowledge or

suspicions... that Paddock was plotting such an attack.

"I knew Stephen Paddock as a kind, caring, quiet man.

(...) It never occured to me in any way whatsoever that he was planning violence against anyone."

She said Paddock had given her a plane ticket to the Philippines... prior to the shooting,...

saying he wanted her to go home and see her family.

He then wired a sum of one hundred-thousand U.S. dollars to her,... saying the money was

a gift... for her to buy a house for her family.

Officials say,... there's no indication at the moment... that she was aware of Paddock's

deadly plans.

Whiny Donald Trump Asks Why Senate Isn't Investigating "Fake News Networks" - Duration: 3:45.

Donald Trump clearly woke up on Thursday morning on the wrong side of the bed because he immediately,

first thing this morning started tweeting out about the alleged fake news media.

In fact, he went as far as to say that the Senate Intelligence Committee needs to be

investigating the fake news networks here in the United States.

He said "Why isn't the Senate Intel Committee looking into the fake news networks in our

country, OUR was in all caps to see why so much of our news is just made up.

Fake." Trump tweeted.

First and foremost they actually kind of are already looking into the whole fake news things

by investigating those Russian ads that were purchased on Facebook and Twitter, so I wouldn't

say that they're not investigating the fake news.

Furthermore, and this is something that you need to get drilled into your brain, perhaps

tattoo it across your forehead, just because a news outlet reports something about you

that isn't flattering doesn't mean it's fake.

Donald Trump is specifically referring to the instance, the reports that came out from

NBC news that Tillerson called him a "moron" over the summer.

Tillerson then gave a press conference, did not directly refute that he called Trump a

"moron" and since his press conference more reports came out showing that "yes" people

there said he did call him a "moron" and in fact he called him a little bit worse than

that, but Donald Trump took that as whatever kind of vindication he needed.

Tillerson didn't call him a "moron", so anybody reporting on it is in fact fake news and maybe

even a "moron" themselves.

But that's not how it works.

Tillerson did not deny calling Donald Trump a "moron", which Trump said he did, but he

didn't and two, the media's going keep reporting what they want to report unless you sue them

for liable.

Did you think about that?

If it actually were fake news, if they were completely making things up, just fabricating

it out of nowhere to defame you, you can absolutely sue for liable, but you're not doing that

and you're the king of frivolous lawsuits, so if you honestly thought that it wasn't

real news you would have already had your lawyers working on this case.

What you are doing and this is something everybody needs to understand, Donald Trump's constant

attacks on the media are an effort to downplay the actual investigations going on into his

administration and his many failures that he's had since becoming president.

If people think the news media's fake when they come out and report how horrible Donald

Trump is or what's happening in the investigation, they won't think it's real, but again, it's

not working anymore.

The majority of the public has a higher trust in the media than they do in Donald Trump.

The majority of American voters do not trust Donald Trump.

They do not want to see him run for president again and they do not trust him to handle

any kind of crisis here in the United States.

Donald Trump is losing his battle against the media and right now that is the only weapon

he has to energize his base and as we've seen from polls, as we've seen from public opinion,

it's starting to backfire on him tremendously.

Trump Cabinet Members Create "Suicide Pact" In Case Any Of Them Get Fired - Duration: 3:54.

By now, I'm sure everybody's heard about the drama that's been unfolding about Secretary

of State Rex Tillerson over the last few days where it was reported over the summer he called

Donald Trump a moron.

When asked about it in an interview he didn't refute it, although Donald Trump insists that

Tillerson did not in fact call him a moron.

Well, as it turns out, as this story was developing, BuzzFeed released a report saying that Treasury

Secretary Steve Mnuchin and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson have all formed a kind of suicide

pact, meaning that if any one of them gets fired, the other two are going to quit their

jobs as well.

You can't lose one without losing all three.

The report didn't necessarily go on to state why they had formed this suicide pact, but

presumably it's so that they all have a little bit more power within the administration,

and so the president knows that I can't get rid of one of them without losing all three.

Now, Republicans have come out in the last few days and said that Tillerson, Mattis,

and John Kelly, Donald Trump's Chief of Staff, not Steve Mnuchin, are the only ones preventing

chaos within the White House, so it's interesting as to why Mnuchin would be included in the

suicide pact and not General Kelly, but regardless, Mnuchin's in there, and to be honest, I say

let them go.

Let all three of these people go from the administration.

They might be preventing what some Republicans are calling chaos from happening within the

White House, but not a single one of them is doing a decent job.

None of them are good enough to be doing what they're doing save maybe for Mattis, but Mnuchin

and Tillerson?

No.

These guys came from industry.

They have no idea how the government truly works.

Rex Tillerson has been talking to people in Korea and people in Russia trying to work

out oil deals for his former employer, the company he ran, Exxon.

Mnuchin is a guy who actually should be in prison rather than serving as the Treasury

Secretary, so their little suicide pact, I'm all for it, because I'm all for every one

of them getting removed from the Trump Administration, because they're not doing any good.

Oh, maybe they're preventing Donald Trump from launching nuclear weapons.

Maybe they're not.

We don't know.

All we do know is that if Donald Trump actually wanted to do something, he's going to do it

anyway regardless of what these three people tell him he should or shouldn't do.

They're not serving any actual function within the White House other than to make this country

look even worse than it already has gotten under Trump.

They are not good at their jobs, again, save Mattis.

Mattis not horrible, but Mnuchin and Tillerson, it's time for these guys to go.

I know Donald Trump wants them to go, so let's see how serious they are about their suicide

pact as soon as Donald Trump decides that he's had enough of Tillerson and he can't

take this moron talk any longer, because we already know it's starting to get under Trump's

skin, and we know that Tillerson did not refute the fact that he said it.

Let's see how this unfolds in the next few days, and I'm sure it's probably not going

to go in Donald Trump's favor, but I'm more interested in seeing if these three people

in the administration actually adhere to their suicide pact.

Trump's Tax Plan Helps Wall Street, Not Main Street - Duration: 11:09.

S. Peries: It's the Real News Network.

I'm Sharmini Peries coming to you from Baltimore.

A general consensus is emerging that Trump's tax plan, which he presented last Wednesday

will benefit mostly the country's upper classes and corporations.

In fact the only people that got a tax increase are the poorest taxpayers.

A quick scan of even business press headlines will reinforce what I'm saying.

For example, Bloomberg writes, "Tax reform could open a huge loophole for wealthy Americans",

and the conservative magazines National Review has a headline that reads, "Congressional

Republicans tax plan isn't great for Trump suburbanites."

However Trump himself promised on Wednesday that he and the rich generally would not benefit

from this plan.

Here's what he said.

D. Trump: Our framework includes our explicit commitment, that tax reform will protect low

income and middle income households, not the wealthy and well-connected.

They can call me all they want, it's not gonna help.

I'm doing the right thing, and it's not good for me, believe me.

S. Peries: Joining us to analyze what Trump's tax plan would mean for us is Michael Hudson.

Michael is a distinguished research professor of economics at the University of Missouri,

Kansas City.

He's the author of several books, and the most recent among them is J Is For Junk Economics.

Good to have you back, Michael.

M. Hudson: Good to be here, Sharmini.

S. Peries: Michael.

Let's cut to the chase here.

Everyone seems to agree that this tax plan will benefit only the rich.

Give us a sense of your main points of why you want to contest this tax plan is beneficial

for all.

M. Hudson: Sure.

It should be called the Leona Helmsley tax plan.

Only the little people will pay taxes.

But about the loopholes, the interesting thing is Trump said he wasn't going to gain a penny,

and he may have been telling the truth, because ... That would be true if he's already paying

a zero-income tax, and his income tax rate is going to go from zero to zero.

That's about the same for a lot of the biggest corporations in America.

Apple, Google, Alphabet, these companies that have been taking all of their profits abroad,

trillions of dollars, supposedly, that they're holding abroad altogether, they haven't paid

any taxes on, because they've held them nominally in a teeny little office in Ireland, or the

Cayman Islands, claiming that they have to pay hardly any income tax at all.

Now, the misrepresentation is that Trump says that now he can bring all this money back

from these offshore enclaves, from these tax avoidance zones.

The reality is the money's never been in these zones.

The money's been in America all the time.

Apple, Google, rich real estate companies, simply hold all the money in an American bank,

but in the name of an affiliate, an office, registered in Panama, or some other offshore

enclave.

So there'll be zero effect on the balance of payments, but it will just walk in their

zero rate, enabling them to have avoided taxes for over a decade.

I think 2004 was the last tax holiday.

They'll bring them all back now, without having to pay much tax at all.

S. Peries: Michael, another method that wealthy individuals and companies can use to avoid

paying taxes is deducting investment expenses.

Tell us how this works.

M. Hudson: If you look at the real estate industry, about the loopholes, since World

War II the national income and product accounts report real estate is hardly paying any income

tax at all.

If you own a building and you're an absentee owner, not living there, not a homeowner,

but absentee owners, they avoid paying any income tax because they don't earn an income.

They pay interest, [inaudible 00:04:17] for paying interest, or they pretend under the

accounting rules, that the buildings actually depreciating in value, even while the building's

soaring in value.

It's going way up, they don't have to pay tax, and then finally, with the estate tax

being ... When they die they don't have to pay any capital gains.

The heirs get it without having to pay any tax.

The richest people would have to pay an estate tax, but that's being knocked out also.

... I think that everybody, as you pointed out, who've looked at the tax plan, says,

"All the benefits at the top.

Where's the benefit for the low income people?"

Well, the low income people are going to have to pay more tax.

The minimum tax rate is actually raised from 10% to 12%, and people who live in Democratic

states, New York, New Jersey, Maryland, California, will not be able to subtract the state and

local taxes that they've been paying all these years.

So the tax rate for wage earners, for people who actually have to file tax forms and declare

an income, is actually going to go up, and the economy is going to be made even poorer.

S. Peries: Now, Trump and his supporters argue that tax reductions will make the U.S. more

competitive, and it will lead to more investment in ... In an earlier interview that we had

with Dean Baker, he points out that historically this has not happened when taxes on corporations

and on the wealthy were reduced.

So if it does not lead to more investment, what do the corporations do with this additional

untaxed income?

M. Hudson: They're going to do the same thing they've done with 92% of corporate earnings

in the last decade.

They're going to pay it out as higher dividends, pushing up the stock price, and most of all

they're going to use the money for stock buybacks.

They're going to buy back their stocks to raise the price.

They are not going to invest, and the reason they're not going to invest is ... The reason

you would invest, would be to sell more goods to the market and expand the economy.

But most corporations, and certainly Wall Street, know that the game is over.

The economy has not grown since 2008, except for the financial sector, and the real estate

sector.

That is, except for the richest 5%, many ... 95% of Americans, the economy's shrunk, just like

it's shrinking in Europe.

Now, corporations know this, and they say, "There's only one thing we can do, now that

the game is over and the economies are shrinking.

We're going to take the money and run.

We're going to cut the taxes, and all the money that we get from whatever we are able

to earn, we're going to give to our stockholders."

S. Peries: What are the consequences of this for us?

M. Hudson: Well, if it works it means the class war is back in business with a vengeance.

But it's not going to work.

There is no way that a group of Republican senators are really going to commit political

suicide by going and actually voting for this plan any more than they voted for Trump's

medical health plan, and revocation of Obamacare.

What this is really doing politically though, is driving a stake in the heart of the Democratic

party.

The Democrats are so sure that the kerfuffle over this tax plan is going to backfire against

the Republicans, that the knives are out and they're fighting like they've never fought

before against the supporters of Bernie Sanders, against Elizabeth.

The Wall Street, Hillary, wing of the Democratic party says, "Now we're going to win the election.

We don't need Bernie supporters.

We don't need the working class.

We can form an even more right-wing party than Hillary had, what her program was."

And obviously the Bernie supporters and the bulk of the Democratic party is not going

to go along with the themes of the head of the national committee, and it's going to

probably split the Democratic party, because the way in which politicians are opposing

the tax plan, is it's going to vastly increase the budget deficit if it would pass.

Just like the Reagan and Bush tax cuts quadrupled the national debt, the same thing would happen.

So what you're having is the Democrats who are arguing against the Trump plan are budget

hawks.

They're saying, "A deficit is bad."

Now, as you know from the people you have on this program like my colleague Bill Black,

myself, the modern monetary theorists, we're all in favor of having the government run

a budget deficit, if it pumps money into the economy, if it does lead to more investment,

if it does employ more people.

But in this case the deficit isn't going to pump money into the economy at all.

It's only going to pump money into Wall Street, and the money's going to be used just to push

up stock prices, push up bond prices, and push up real estate prices, and trophies for

the rich.

It's exactly the opposite of the kind of deficit that we've been urging all along.

So you're going to have a lot of junk economic theories on the Democratic side, opposing

the junk economic theories on the Republican side, and it's not ... They're claiming that

this is trickle-down economics and supply-side economics, but the people who originally introduced

supply-side economics under Reagan, people like Craig Roberts, have denounced the Trump

plan, saying, "This is a travesty of supply-side economics, because all it does is supply more

money to the richest 1%."

It supplies more money to Wall Street, not to the economy at large, and that's what really

should be brought out, and I know that you're bringing it out, but certainly the mainstream

press is not emphasizing this.

S. Peries: All right Michael.

I thank you so much for joining us today, and I guess this discussion will only continue

over the next couple of weeks, so we hope to come back to you.

Thank you.

M. Hudson: Good to be here, Sharmini.

S. Peries: Thank you for joining us here on The Real News Network.
